If Lamine Yamal didn’t exist, these two players would be in many people’s lists as potential Ballon d’Or winners - or at least top 5-10 contenders - over the next few years. The PL is welcoming two of the most highly rated talents in the world at the same time. Both will have to find their feet and settle and both seem to have sceptics who think the big bad Premier League TM will be too much for them. Their transfers fees couldn’t be any more disparate - above board… City have acquired an elite talent for a pittance whilst Liverpool are betting a £220m+ outlay on Wirtz.

The pressure Wirtz will be under is sun-sized and if the press aren’t kind, every other signing this summer can pretty much sneak by undetected such could the glare on Wirtz be.

For the sake of this thread, let’s assume no punishment that boots City will be meted out, therefore both players will be PL fixtures for the duration of their time in England.

Who do you think will be the bigger success in terms of goals, assists and outright performance? Just to make clear not “success” relative to transfer fee.

The price tag is a massive weight that will always hang on Wirtz with regards to judging his performances, especially in comparison to Cherki, who cost 4 times less.

In terms of pure performance, I think Wirtz will do better. Cherki will have those moments of magic but his discipline will be the unknown. Pep is known to be strict in how he employs his tactics and it Cherki strays from it, which he has been known to do, then Pep will not hesitate to take him out.

Now, by much Wirtz has to do better than Cherki to be rated as being a bigger success is a key question and everyone will have different standards. Plus, team success will play a huge role.

Wirtz can be Liverpool's new Coutinho. I'd hate that.

I'm going to go with Cherki. I feel like he'll do well, and I have a funny feeling that Wirtz won't look anything like a £125m player.

I think Wirtz will be better, City will probably turn Cherki into another winger drone, still expect him to be better than what they currently have, but probably Mahrez at City level at best. Which is still very good but not award winning or dominant level.

Relative price tags will influence this quite a bit so I’d say Wirtz will be “better” as a one on one straight comparison but Cherki will prove to be a better value for money signing. Hopefully neither pulls up any trees, so to speak.

I'd say Wirtz as he is a generational talent, while Cherki is "just" a very good player. However, Wirtz suffered a torn ACL already once, i wonder how his knee will keep up with the really tough, physical PL football.

Different types of players, but Wirtz is miles ahead in my book. More end product, more experience and has showed consistancy for multiple season already. Cherki has basically had 1 good season in France. Both are small of size and might need time to adapt to a better, faster and more physical league.

I believe and hope both of them will be excellent, they're both young amazing players and I dont see either flopping. Cherki might get more hype because he plays slightly higher up the pitch and is more offensive-minded. Wirtz will have more pressure and will get criticized for his price tag anytime he has a bad game even though he has nothing to do with his own price tag.

I haven't properly watched Wirtz so I'll go with Cherki. I think he'll do well for City as long as Guardiola doesn't completely neuter him, far less pressure on that price tag too.

say Wirtz as he is a generational talent, while Cherki is "just" a very good player.
Cherki is the textbook definition of generational talent though.
Most talented OL academy product ever.
Arguably the most technically gifted French player ever and completely two-footed on top of that.
Always looked levels above any of his teammates in youth NT teams in arguably the most stacked youth system in the world (that includes playing with the likes of Olise,Doué,Barcola, all elite players in their own right)

In fact the only reason why he didn't win Ligue 1 POTS is because Dembele suddenly turned into Prime Messi goal scoring wise around January. Other than that he was outperforming all the PSG stars on a terrible Lyon team.

I think he's already the best creator in the world right now. Statistically speaking he had the highest xA in the top 5 leagues and the highest assist to game ratio in all comps in spite of Lyon having horrible finishers and not even scoring that many goals.

If he adapts to Pep's system and improves accordingly I think he'll compete for POTY very very quickly.

Why have they got him so annoyingly cheap then?

I predict that this thread will be a replica of the Mbappe vs Rashford one in 3-5 years.

Cherki isn't fit or disciplined enough, Wirtz isnt strong enough. Both will struggle

I'm, sorry but this part of the post is an absolutely ridiculous take.

As the OP specifically says "not “success” relative to transfer fee", the answer is Wirtz.

I think both will be very good but not generational players - somewhere in the Foden, Mane, Bernardo, Ozil class of excellent PL players but just short of the very best. Neither hits the levels of a De Bruyne or Salah.

Wirtz, I think. At least from the get go, Pep will take some time moulding Cherki into a player that he likes and it may not even work out at all. Wirtz is ready from the get go, he's such a smart, versatile, hard-working and tactically astute player that I really think that he's going to fit more or less seamlessly in any decent set up.

Wirtz is much better than Temu Taarabt.

Obviously i vote Wirtz.

Is there a reason why Cherki had 8 sub appearances last year? City will regret letting KDB go. 100%

What about Cunha? Are we forgetting him?

Stick him in also sure...

Wirtz. Liverpool will have to play him in every game. They are currently a better team. Cherki will probably be eased into the city team over the course of the season and unless he’s exceptional in training he could easily get swallowed up in that squad. On the flip side if he doesn’t work out fast enough he’ll be left behind
