Off the back of the other thread, you have a “race” to 6, but equally, the narrow hall of World Cup winners needs adding to, right?

So outside of those, who’s next? Portugal? Holland? Belgium? Croatia? Colombia? Morocco? Senegal? Japan? None of the aforementioned?

Norway are only a couple more serious talents away from being strong contenders in 2030. It could all come together.

They will hire Martinez in 2029 then.

Belgium, Switzerland and Norway likely all go out this round. Then it's the usuals.

Another European team is probably the most likely, but even that seems a remote possibility, as it will require a smaller country's golden generation to actually fulfil their potential for a change, with all the major nations underperforming at the same time. Morocco still look the most likely candidate from outside Europe and South America, but on last night's evidence there's still a chasm between them and the likes of France.

Can't see anyone outside of France, England, Spain or Argentina winning this one.

It's impossible to really guess, because it could be a generation or two away from now and we have no idea which players are going to come through. But if I had to:

Portugal/Netherlands
Turkey/Sweden/Denmark/Norway/Nigeria/Egypt
Morocco/Algeria/Colombia/Mexico/Russia
Japan/USA/Senegal/Ghana/China/Belgium/Switzerland/Croatia
Australia/Iran/South Korea

It's going to come down to the wealth of the associations, the footballing culture and the size of the population

Japan or maybe Morocco. Both have a long way to go though. Would love to see Holland win one but their managers need to stop what they're doing. They always have a decent squad, close to good enough to win it, but when they get up there for their shot, they suddenly have a really poor mentality as of late. Portugal have mentality issues too.

I can really see Japan being up there if they can raise their game one or two notches. I confess I dont know what their youth looks like, but it still feels too much engineered rather than raw talent that's nurtured.

I've thought Portugal have had strong squads for the last two tournaments (with obvious flaws). So they would be my bet, especially considering where it's being held next. They obviously need a strong coach, but Portugal produce talented coaches so they seem the most likely to me (although still, the odds are against them).

The Dutch have gone out of tournaments by small margins since 2006 I believe. They're always contenders but part of me thinks their best oppotunities to win in may have passed, barring an exceptional generation that gives them strength from front-to-back.

I'd love Japan to make big strides in terms of making it deep into the tournament, I always tend to support them in their matches, but them winning it still seems far away.

I'm intrigued to see how the next generation will fare for Croatia, but it doesn't seem likely they'll challenge so brilliantly again. I was impressed in the last World Cup with how well they still did despite losing Mandzukic and Rakitic from 2018, but next time they'll be without Modric, Perisic and Kovacic (presumably). I think they've been seriously unlucky this time and in the final in 2018 with some poor or close decisions, so I hope they can remain competitive, even for selfish reasons as they've been involved in some great matches with some memorable comebacks.

Norway have a chance this time. I would only make them favourites against Switzerland but England and Argentina are beatable. They have to really go for this - sure, they can get even better in the coming years, but they also have the surprise factor this time.

The Dutch or Portugal if they get their shit together and hire good managers. Always a steady stream of talent and squads capable of competing. The Dutch have already come very close.

Who FIFA decide they want to be WC winners and fix the tournament accordingly

Portugal and Netherlands are regulars for competing for it and often just need a good manager to not flop like they do. Norway has a serious chance at it now but I don't think they'll do it. Don't see anybody else having the talent to do it.

Portugal are where Spain were pre-win, consistenly producing capable players and managers but falling short on the big stage. You have to think a year will come where it clicks for them and they win one.

Portugal, Holland or Belgium are by far the most likely. There's a big gap to the next tier.

Portugal/Netherlands will probably be the next new winner as they’re close to good enough now. With a stronger mentality and things going their way a bit they can get over the line. Belgium, Morocco, Croatia maybe with another good crop are the tier below.

Germany and Brazil are bound to get their act together at some point, don’t think we see a new winner for another 4/5 tournaments yet.
