World Cup Winners with Multiple Titles
Brazil are in what looks like terminal decline - never in my lifetime have they been so poor across so many positions with barely anything in the pipeline to replace them. They’re going from bad to worse and with the way they are plundered for talent and no longer playing with a Brazilian philosophy and panache, it could take decades for them to recover, if they do. Brazil have been Brazil for at least half a century (let’s say 1958 - 2006), but the mystique started to fade in 2006 and hit a nadir with the 1-7 in their home World Cup. The new generation hold Brazil with little regard or acknowledgment of aura, for good reason really.
Germany have also plummeted from the heights of the past generation. They’ve also lost their way and identity, playing “un-German” Pepified football that is predictable and one dimensional. Unlike Brazil, Germany are constantly producing World class players, just not in sequence or uniformly as they used to where they had to leave one elite player out the team in lieu of another. I don’t think Germany have been written off and it may simply be a change of manager and approach has them return to their formidable stature as the team to avoid.
Italy are practically a mirror image of Brazil. Both seem to have completely lost their way and their collective quality in the first decade of the century. They’ve still won the Euros since, but they are even more of a World Cup non-entity than Brazil these last 16 years. Like Brazil, some serious work and overhauling needs to be done to restore them to former glory. Just like Brazil, Italy’s lore is in jeopardy of fading for those in their 20’s or below. They’ve not seen a: Baggio, Nesta, Baresi, Maldini and so on and so forth in their pomps. Will they ever get their own versions?
Argentina will no doubt lab up the next best ever candidate once this one hangs them up. Still in the running for a fourth at the time of writing. Once this tournament ends for them, you’d think there’d be a lull before the next super saviour emerges, but who is to say he won’t be on the scene by 2030? Outside of this as yet to be revealed golden child, Argentinian football looks pretty barren compared to their usual production line; Di Maria, Zanetti, Mascherano etc adjacents don’t seem to be emerging, but as is likely, they’ll have the Kempes>Maradona>Messi chain continue before the supporting cast assemble, given their propensity for the absurd.
France are the only team on the list in the ascendancy with even their current squad having at least another World Cup in them. When that squad has 3 legitimate Ballon d’Or contenders, it’s fair to say they are in a very good place. What is more is the French production line is ridiculous. They are on course to be the Brazil of the new half century, some might say. If they do go on to win this tournament, they’ve only 12yrs worth of trophies to attain to get to 6th first. As things stand, is it likely that anyone else on this list will stop them?
Spain, England and?? Would hope to lift the World Cup and interrupt proceedings. The Old Order is in danger of being left behind as far as I can see. Doesn’t matter what the present says as much as the state of their domestic leagues and the talent pools to draw players from. They’re going to have to overhaul as much as France, Spain, Germany and England have at academy level to compete. Do they have the financial resources to do that?
This is as much a thought exercise as something that would be fun for others to dredge up in the future, where views may well have done a 180 and the superpower that is Cape Verde are contesting for their 3rd World Cup triumph.
