Why are American chants so bad?

We're not really a chanting kind of fanbase. That's not something that you see in American sports leagues so it's no wonder that when US soccer fans try to cook something up it's pretty lame.

Oh man they hated me on Friday. I was singing ‘This is how it feels to be City, this is how it feels to be small’ swap city with America. ‘I’d rather vote for trump than be a scouse’. The one that was met with horrors though was ‘Build a bonfire with America on top’.

Good crack and was hilarious seeing the Americans look in disgust.

They even didn’t like the Maguire song as it involved swearing.

Nothing stopping Grizzlies fans chanting ‘he cooks when he wants, he cooks when he waaannts, Ja Morant, he cooks when he wants. Poor to be honest. Only lack of inventiveness is preventing these classic chants in the NBA :wenger:

They way they refer to everything as a 'play', I just want to bitch-slap them so hard.

Nation tries to develop its football culture against the odds in an often hostile environment. Sometimes uses local colloquialisms when talking out loud. Is more powerful than my nation.

This makes me so fecking angry :mad::mad::mad: and sneery :smirk::smirk::smirk::smirk:

USA is too woke for Euro chant type. For lots of our chants, you go to jail there (or you are at least kicked out from stadium).

Don't think it's american but that's "Let's go" on repeat chant you hear in Tennis must be one of the worst in sport.

I’m just going to through this out there. I’ve been to 7 united games at old trafford, and North American sports are way better to attend. Everything is so docile at old trafford, no drinking and people don’t want to hear you yelling. I spent my time at old trafford half in the bag paranoid I’m going to get kicked out. For nfl, nba or mlb games I go to i can be a drunken idiot and have a good time

Hm, lately i do have a feeling (based on what i see on TV of course) that atmosphere on PL games is becoming more "civilised" and quiet. Maybe i am wrong.
The rest of Europe (especially southern and eastern Europe) is the place where old school chanting and supporting is still alive.

I remember a lady complained to security about me because I yelled “feck off” on an offside call and I was told to cool it. Definitely not worth the money

Depends where you sit.

If you’re in the family section then you won’t get much singing or abusive language. Nor will you get drunken idiocy as people have their partners and kids.

Don’t apologise as certainly not ignorant!

Yes there’s a family section and signing area (safe standing now too).

Traditionally though the Stretford End is the area you go if you want the best atmosphere. Always was more affordable.

The coed talent in the stands for American sports takes your attention span to another level after a few beers.....just saying!

Different supporter/fan culture. I have a hard time here explaining to them why a club that claims to have/had some of the toughest hooligans also has a giant bubble machine.

Just in case even one person believes this, I'm going to have to say that he in fact is not Irish. His Da was but he obviously hated him , ditched the family name and gave his children these names, Spencer William Morgan, Elise Morgan, Stanley Christopher Morgan, Albert Douglas Morgan. So, Not Irish.
Irish lite, like Terry Wogan/Graham Norton.

There are dumb phrasing everywhere, and, yes, US soccer chants are embarrassing. The phrase “gutted” is pretty lame too though. How many times a season can Shaw be gutted anyway? Last season it was often twice a week.

My stab at this, having lived on both sides of the pond. A few factors:

1) There isn't much tribalism in the States since the majority of folks in the states have moved many times in their lives. (Also explains the sense of humour -- lowest common denominator to enable it to translate across the country.)
So sporting events are really more entertainment than a show of one's personal identity/tribalism. The passion just isn't the same for their own teams. Having said that, college sporting events (esp college basketball) are 10 times more passionate and more 'tribal' than US professional sports, say in those 'shit chant' videos in this thread.

2) The propensity of being in a group or a mob-like environment is lower in the US. They tend to act more individually -- or have certainly been socialised to act more individualistic than say Europeans and Asians for sure.
There 'group expressions' isn't a common phenomenon. Personally, this socialisation runs counterintuitive to human nature. Herd mentality than the perceived 'rugged American individualism.'
That's also why Americans are susceptible to groupthink a lot. A sense of belonging to a community tends to kick in then. Ying & Yang.

3) Lack of creativity -- The US culture when faced with confrontational situations tends to be expressed in a more violent form. Its form of masculinity is just more violent with the availability of weapons etc, it's a good thing sports tribalism isn't that rife. They will express themselves and fight with guns more so than say the Brits, with words/chants. So linguistic expressions are less developed or repressed.
