Why does the defense resemble the Looney Tunes?

Right from comical clearances that go barely outside the box to not clearing at all and horsing around with the ball at the edge of the box?

Most of our defenders treat the ball like a grenade.

We have had multiple keepers. Multiple right and left backs. Multiple cb partnerships. Multiple players shielding them. Multiple managers who pride their defensive work like Mourinho and LVG.

Nothing seems to work. Apart from a curse of having used our defensive luck with Rio and Vidic what's the explanation?

Last minute of the game. A corner kick. Kjaer unmarked in the keeper's box. Not ONE player arsed to contest him.

You tell me. I give up.

What?

Milan put the ball in a lot and we defended it really well until 1 set piece at the end of the game

Are we like Wile E Coyote?

Meticulously set traps up in defence, only for attackers to run right through them unimpeded?

We don't concede many goals nowadays. Maguire, Shaw and Wan Bissaka all close to ever present. I don't really see the need to have this ultra negative spin on this defense.

Do we have the record for most goals conceded from a corner in the last 5 years? We must do.

We need to bring in a defensive set piece coach or something because the amount of goals we concede from corners or free kicks into the box is becoming a joke. It’s like we learn nothing each time it happens, either it’s a coaching problem or the players are failing to take onboard whatever they’re being taught.

You truly believe that? For the goal that was ruled out, we had 3 players with collective indecision, allowing that shot to happen. Bailly dropped deep a couple of times playing people onside, Telles sold himself time and again leaving his flank open, Henderson looked uncomfortable all evening, and the midfielders weren't tracking their men at all in the first 30 minutes. It was a terrible defensive performance in that first half that would have been - against a decent side - severely punished.

Going forward we of course also struggled with no outlet.

Like a specific member or the Looney Tunes or all of them? They did pretty well in Space Jam tbf.

It's been the same for several seasons now, we stick two defensive minded midfielders in front of the defence to bail them out and then they feck up on set peices.

It doesn't take great players to be good at defending set pieces so i do think it's coaching. Something that needs working on and is overdue.

The defence is just the easy target. The central midfield not being able to keep the ball for more than 3 passes is a far bigger problem. Terrible on the ball.

The defence do a fairly decent job of winning it back when it keeps coming back at them. Their main job.

1 goal against in the last 6 games and it was a keeper's blunder and our defense are "looney tunes". Give your head a shake and drop the agenda...

Maguire's lack of communication is a massive factor in my opinion, you never ever see him organising the defence or berating someone when they make an error. I'm not saying he has to be Roy Keane or Wayne Rooney who never stopped berating anybody or anything but at least show a bit of fight sometimes.

He had too much space to shoot thats true, but his touch into space was with his hand and didnt count.

I'm talking about our defending of crosses and balls into the box. Up until that point Milan attacked well and with good tempo. When they put the ball into the box we defended it despite midfielders and fullbacks getting into the box and if the ball had found them, could easily have been goals. But they werent because we coped well considering how many men they put forward and our wingers not tracking back

Only because they had MJ and he gave them placebo water.

So we need Bruno to give our lads some placebo water then?

  • We don't dominate games enough
  • None of our sitting midfielders are actually that good at protecting the back 4
  • The central defenders are decent but nothing special
  • We sit back and invite pressure and don't have enough players who come out of the press with class and confidence
  • Lastly, and surprisingly, we aren't even that organised for a team that sits back a lot
