He's captained France u17s and Sochaux u19s and has been playing u19 football for Sochaux as a 15 year old.

Shame we can’t execute deals for the first team like we can at youth level. Snapped up quite a few highly rated youngsters with ease this summer.

We actually have people who have knowledge about football running the academy, and it shows.

a highly rated 16 year old French CB ... after missing out on Upamecano and Badiashile back then, third time's the charm, huh?

crazy how many highly talented 16- and 17-year-olds we've been able to bring in recently, it's great to see. At least one level where we actually seem to know what we're doing.

I have a feeling that the academy operates with autonomy. Glazers and Ed give them a budget and they fire away. No dithering. If we could do what the youth team do but with 18-22 year olds we would be laughing.

I think possibly we’ve done a little extra this summer because all the indications point to it being much more difficult to sign EU young uns after brexit

He was about 5'11 when I watched him in a few games about 10 months ago. Seems to have shot up.

For all the short comings with the senior squad transfers, we are doing extremely well at the youth setup. We are just throwing money all around and kudos to that - because we might actually hit a jackpot.

We’ve got some really top talent there but let’s not get carried away. Our U23s are yet to win a game and both our U18s and U16s lost to city today.

This isn't a dig but there's sort of a contradiction there, as individual player progression and results don't really go hand in hand. There can be a handful of players progressing the way we'd like and the rest that don't, which ends up in hindering the team in results. Different players progress at different rates as we well know, plus there's been plenty of new faces so teams are yet to gel, especially with them having the whole of the pandemic without playing any football.

Hopefully we can keep this up so we don't have to keep trying to make 100m signings to improve our squad.

Hopefully they will be highly rated 20 year olds so it should save us a fortune.

Indeed. Our academy has been the one bright spark at the club for awhile now. And there's definitely been a change in the purpose and intent over the last 2-3 years.

I wouldn't worry about it. We're in a bit of a transition. We've loaned out a lot of players from a talented 2000-2001 generation, and naturally there will be a bit of a step down from that generation. On the other hand, we've bought a lot of talent for that 2003-2004 generation. They're still young though and 2 of those transferred players have been injured for entire seasons (Mejia and Emeran). So this meant a player like Shoretire, who granted is more talented, got most of the playtime for the u18s to a point where you can play him for the u23s.

So our u23s is really young, and lacking the kind of talent the 2000-01 generation had all over the pitch. So a bit of a combination of factors leading to bad results. I mean, just remember how we used to have Laird and Williams at fb, with Gomes, Levitt, Garner as midfielders, and Greenwood as an attacker along with Chong. Kind of hard to compete with that as well as the depth off the bench.

And our u18s have so many players incoming and returning from injury, that we're still a bit of a mixed side for that age group. Shoretire and Mejbri were moved up. Same with Will Fish. Emeran and Mejia who should have played with that group last season in the u18s, have to play for the u18s to bring them up to speed. Hoogewerf will likely move up to the u23s soon. Hugill who we just got is now playing for the u23s like hes Greenwood because we're lacking that up front threat for the u23s and we have plenty in the u18s.

We've resorted to playing players in their unnatural position combined with those factors. I would expect the talent to eventually regress to the mean, or rather, progress to the mean as we'll get better over time.

I have a feeling we'll do better for the u19 uefa youth league as we'll get a more compact generation of talents together similar to the 2018/19 u19 side with Laird, Williams, O'Connor, Chong, Greenwood, Gomes, Garner, Levitt, Kovar, Puigmal, Galbraith, etc...

I'm pretty sure it takes up just as much time and has just as many failed attempts as the senior team. Just the difference in media reporting that makes it feel like they are much less drama free.

Can't say I blame us. With Brexit looming signing EU youngsters is very uncertain. I also think, as obvious as it may sound, that we're trying to get the £80m-£90m players before they end up being worth that. We really struggle with the prices we're quoted so overpaying a little for them now rather than in a few years time does make a lot of sense.

Yeah, if the scouts, coaching staff think these players are huge talent then it's better to take the risks.

Also Brexit might be playing big role too.

Average age of our U23s is about 18 years, 4 months. Last match we started 3 × 16 year olds and 3 × 17 year olds. You cannot expect 16 year old players to immediately start winning against 21 year old opponents.
