That's not true at all, he can operate from deep but players like Scholes or Fabregas can do that or influence things in the final third. His passing is Alonso-like - very accurate but largely uninventive.
Now maybe, a few years ago not the case. Pirlo is a criminally underrated player.

Actually the more I read this, this is such a retarded post. Pirlo not inventive?

Seems to have come into his own the past month. Has looked incredible.
Top player with a seemingly "big game mentality" and maturity beyond his years. Seems like he's confident in his ability, and has that little "edge" on him which I like - stands his ground. Reminds me of Rooney in that way at least.

Is a godsend for England. Hope we can unearth a few other gems as well and we may have adecent side going forward.

Should be asking the staff at Arsenal how they produce youing english players who can pass.

Are we talking about the same player? Weird because I don't think it's the case at all. Pirlo is capable of pulling off bold and penetrative passes with far greater regularity than Alonso and is much better making decisive passes in the final third.

Personally, I think his best position is in a more advanced midfield role than the holding role he has traditionally occupied for Milan. We saw some of his best stuff for Italy when they won the WC and he was pulling strings higher up the pitch for them and had the license, responsibility even, to roam forwards and make things happen. Imo, he was their best player in that tournament.

Seem unlikely if his club have played him deeper. I thought Italy played shit-on-a-stick in that world cup - I don't remember Pirlo being particularly good.

Pirlo was great. Not as good as scholes or Xavi but a fine footballer.

Ballack was one of the best players in the world in 2002 and Deco was instrumental in Rijkaard's Barca team. At their best, they were both brilliant players. It's not like Chief is comparing Scholes with some no mark midfielders.
If you were picking a select team of the season from 2001/02 or 2002, Michael Ballack would have been the first midfielder down on the team-sheet. I don't think Deco ever got to that level but he was a delightful player to watch at Porto and in his first couple of seasons in Spain.

Excuse me, I'm relaxed
Was that supposed to be clever?

Pete was talking only about what he saw of Pirlo in the 2006 World Cup, and his opinion of it.

Wouldn't it be better to discuss it if you disagree, rather than quoting entirely devoid of context to make someone look like a Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime?

What did you think of Pirlo at the 2006 World Cup?

I already said.

I posted a few dots because I am left with the conclusions that he either didn't watch Italy at the world cup and is trying to be a bit clever, is amnesiac or simply doesn't comprehend the football he is watching if he thought Pirlo didn't have a good world cup.

It felt more appropriate to go with awkard silence.

Guardiola on Wilshere. "An excellent player for Arsenal and England. We have many types of his player in our second team."

 According to Henry Winter, that was a compliment.
Yeah, that's where I got the quote. Deleted the bit about it how it's meant to be a compliment because I'm not quite sure how it is?

I know  I'm trying to work out how in any context/bad translation that could be a positive thing. Guardiola's a decent bloke though, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

I suspect he was referring to his age and style of play rather than anything negative.

To be mentioned as worthy of Barca's 2nd team is pretty high praise for such a youngling. The force is strong in him.

If you look at how quickly and seamlessly the likes of Busquets and Pedro emerged from the B team, and if you consider how talented their B team generally is (I remember them giving a strong Spurs side a doing back in 2009), it's a fair comment - especially in terms of style.

The full quote:

Guardiola was asked about the quality of Wilshere and the Barcelona coach said: "Wilshere is a top player. He is an excellent player, not just Arsenal, but also for the national team. [But] he is lucky because we have many players in the second team like him but he plays because there is no pressure at his club to win titles."
Hehe...

Mind games anyone?

I think that is a tad disrespectful but it's a free for all when it comes to knockouts.

What Guardiola said, and it does sound uncharacteristically dismissive of him, was that Wilshere is an excellent player who is lucky he plays for Arsenal because the pressure to win titles there is not as high as it is in Barcelona.
If he's correct that the Barça B is rife with Wilshere types, then that club has bigger problems than I thought. To get to the first team at Barça you must be a finished player, and to get there at 19 or earlier, like Messi, you have to be extraordinary even in this context. This is the reason why the Fábregas and Jon Torals of La Masia end up at the Arsenal. They are quality and they know it, and they want to play. They don't want to end up like Iván de la Peña, who was once justifiably rated as highly as Raúl González.
Guardiola, to his credit, has brought up many players from the system, something neither Rijkaard nor (notoriously) Van Gaal were wont to do. But if the path to first team ball is blocked to great players, those great players will find their way out.

Sounds to me like what was lost in translation was Guardiola bigging up their own youth set-up, or their ability to produce their own talents.

So Barca is full of players in a similar position to wilshere that will never get a run in the first team due to trophies, and they complain when other teams poach them?

Then you should have no complaints when they poach them back after they become good enough. This Arsenal team really has the makings of a great one if you guys bought a defense and gk, but losing Fabregas will set you back badly, you dont lose your talisman and get better, which pleases me, that said I think it will be interesting to see how the league goes next year, Chelsea will be busy, Arsenal will most likely lose Cesc and spend some, City will go big, hopefully United finally pulls out the chequebook and splashes the cash because we could really use some help in midfield.
