World Cup Group Stage - 3rd Round Matches

Broke: Playing out a boring 0:0 to kick Iran out.
Woke: Scoring the 3:3 during injury time to kick Iran out.

The commentator just said before the goal, that this might be the darkest hour in Austrias History.
Well...

Unbelievable, Jeff!

I feel awful for Iran. The whole team has been treated awfully by the US, and then they get their hearts ripped out multiple times tonight.

Great game and all, but it does irk me that everytime the camera pans to the crowd, there's a fan celebrating with people behind him/her wearing tshirts of 3 or 4 different nationalities. Maybe I'm turning into an old fart, but mixed zones are fecking cringe.

Please what was that sort of defending at the end? They can't be serious.

The zones behind the goal we're supposed to be dedicated fan areas but obviously people just tried to resell them to make money

Austria got lucky there. Don’t think tournament football and heat helps with the usual tactics that Rangnick wants. Impossible to press constantly in a tournament like they can during qualifiers as potentially more chance of players getting injured. Need to preserve energy at times and have players who can keep the ball.

This World Cup is so insanely expensive actual fans have a hard time making it to matches so it ends up being just the people who could afford to go to the match in Kansas City. Add to that the fact that the US government probably prevented many Algerians from even coming to the US for the tournament.

I stopped watching at 2-3 (came here and learned of 3-3). Was there a real reason for the extra 2:45 minutes played after the official injury time of 4 minutes?

If you’re Algeria why not let one in at the death there considering the ramifications.
Yeah, I know. It literally looked like the players were shocked when they did the 3:2. Nobody celebrated much. Then they fixed it a minute later.

But come on, they literally left half the Austrian team unmarked in the middle in the end.

I don't know, someone here called it a parody and if you ask me, that's exactly what this game looked like.

Especially after the 20 minutes uninterrupted ball possession by Algeria before, where they were just passing the ball back and forth with no pressure from Austria whatsoever.

Felt fake and scripted. 15 minutes of basically walking around the centre of the pitch, no one wanted to do anything, then suddenly attack - score and immediately concede in the next attack while the ref adds another minute and a half. No one marked in the box too.

Fixed the draw, just like everybody predicted.

Commiserations @Darkhorsez

Gutted for Iran.
Thank you - it seems from that tight offside goal not given that it was not meant to be sadly. Never felt so much stress watching 3 games in a day. Just spare a thought for the Iranian team in their camp watching this - feel awful for them really. I am really proud of them getting the results with all the stress and politics. Unlike them, I have other teams left to cheer for so life goes on.

I feel bad for Iran, but it is good that before the next World Cup teams will be thinking "we gotta win a game. Can't just draw 3."

Commiserations, man -- wanted Iran to go through as a third AFC rep. Just wondering: who would you face if Algeria had held their lead?

Way too ridiculous to be scripted though. If they wanted to fix the game, why not keep it 0:0 like Paraguay and Australia did? Why did Algeria make that last attempt after just passing the ball around for ages? Why not let Austria score on their first attempt after Algeria took the lead and wait until injury time was officially over instead? Way too much stuff to potentially go wrong there.

Watching interviews with the Austrian players definitely makes it seem like they are just as perplexed by what went down there.

Twice, the first chance (a sitter) was missed by Austrian number 15, who blasted it over the bar at 4:27 of injury time. By the way, only 4 minutes of injury time were added initially, which is another mystery (the water break alone took at least 3 minutes).

You think Algeria realised they would be playing Spain instead of Switzerland and phoned it in at the end?
No. They were just as shell shocked as the rest and had a lapse of concentration.

They were probably also shocked by the fact that Austria actually committed more than 3 men forward after how that second half went.

Do you think there's any chance they would have defended like this if they really wanted the win?
