World Cup Round of 16 Matches

Against Colombia it would be more of a war and potentially for Argentina to lose a player or two to suspension.

Also surprised the final QF is being played Monday at 2am.

Really not a lot of time to prepare for Wednesday evening QF so there is small advantage to winner of England/Norway.

Isn't it Sunday 2am?

Bitter much? We're a tiny nation. For us to get to the quarters is a massive achievement. I couldn't give a sh*t how we get there. On top of that we have played some really good football in this tournament. Better stuff than some much bigger nations with much better players in their squads.
It’s not always pretty but Switzerland are massive over-achievers relative to their population size. I think they have a chance in the QFs.

Switzerland will have that European defensive organisation and composure that Egypt didn't. However, unlike Egypt who had some dangerous players in attack, I don't fancy the Swiss attack troubling the Argentine defence, so best chance for them is another penalty shootout.
If we get Manzambi back and Vargas starting, we'll have some X-Factor as well, hopefully!

Other than the 2022 WC when Portugal dropped Ronaldo and then hammered them 6-1, Switzerland have always been very difficult to beat in these tournaments.

Lost 1-0 in extra time to Argentina in 2014, and they've gone out in the last three Euros on penalties to Poland then Spain then England.

I'd imagine it'll be another grind for Argentina.

They're a very consistent side and have been for years now. Usually make the quarters in the Euros and the knockouts in the World Cup. Don't think it will be an easy game.

Switzerland has completely demolished Italy and was very unlucky to go out against England last Euros.

colombia against us is bound to be extremly boring. we neutralize each other as we are very similar in strngth against argentina they are the clear favourites and will be in possesion about 80% of the time but this will also mean they are more open. Yeah we probably will lose but i fancy us much more to score a goal against argentina than against colombia. we also beat spain and france in the past so it's theoretically possible :)
we always make it out of the group and we might win one game more but that's it historically...i think we had by far the easiest group this time. We were clear favourites against all except now against colombia.

An England team that needed a last minute equaliser and an ET goal to beat Slovakia in the previous round.
yeah i dont think we can win against england. the english style doesnt suit us and england has much more talented players. but hey i dont think england was that good so far either so maybe there would be a chance....i think france will win it, they convinced me the most so far.

you know why we are so boring? because we know our limits and we dont try to be something we are not.. we play to our strengths. which is defending (and goalkeeping!!) and fight it out as a team..yeah we had rarely any superstars ever at all who are better than the rest of the team. p.s. i would love to see the meltdown if we would somehow be able to win it greek style.

as i said before if we had someone like Harry Kane we would be really dangerous...reality is we don't :P
well its a cup competition and there are only 3 more games left to play. so i still count it as possible but i think it's unlikely we gonna go any further from now. Argentina though as impressive as their comebacks were they are certainly vulnerable.

It's hardly surprising that Switzerland reached the quarterfinals; against Colombia it was always going to be a toss-up. I know Fifa rankings are a bit iffy but they're consistently top 10-15 for a reason.

No Germany, Italy, Portugal or The Netherlands and Europe still has 6 of 8 quarterfinalists. Powerhouse federation.
True. And equally true it could have been very different. Of the top of my mind

Congo - England 1-0 for 75 minutes ended 1-2.
Senegal - Belgium 2-0 for 86 minutes ended 2-3.
Egypt - Argentina 2-0 for 79 minutes ended 2-3.

Africa really threw it away. Could have had 4/8 in the last 8. Striking down to European sides and regning World champions Argentina. But they didn't. Not because the talent wasn't there but apparently for not being able to close out games.

Unfortunately what that Romanian guy said has shown itself to be true: On far too many occasions they are only able to concentrate for 60 minutes.

At least the VAR room has a minute or two, the conspiracy also demands that the on field ref, with a split second to make a call, is not only judging what the call should be by the rules of the game - but also applying the 'wait, I gotta call for Messi's favor and bias one side if I can but not be too explicit about it, so let me see if this is a marginal call that I can overturn for Argentina' filter in that split second.

Sounds pretty idiotic to me, but hey - don't let reality get in the way of your delusion.
I'm not saying it's what happened here but regardless, we know for a fact that match fixing exist in football, e.g. in 2004 Referee Robert Hoyzer was paid €67,000 by a Croatian gambling syndicate to ensure third-division Paderborn upset Bundesliga giants Hamburg in a German cup game. He then went on to give Paderborn two highly controversial penalties and sent off Hamburg's star striker for protesting. Paderborn won 4–2.

Again, I don't believe anything like that happened today, but you seem to imply that it would be technically too complicated for a ref and/or his team to pull off, therefore it cannot have happened? Unless I misunderstood your argument?

No, it isn’t. That was the correct call.
Watch the full highlights and you get the angle that matters. Pulisic has possession and Tielemans doesn’t play the ball.
He kicked his own foot. No foul. Self inflicted,
So you say he kicked his own foot, onemanarmy says he kicked tielemans, what happened here?
8:30
8:30 tielemans comes from behind with no control over the ball while pulisic has possession and impedes pulisic. He just stomps in front of his foot.
What on earth are you on about? Pulisic kicked the bottom of Tielemans' foot. He was just too slow on the ball. How is that a foul?
no he didn’t.

If you’re coming from behind and you bump into another player you are at fault, since you have no possession and you don’t even play the ball
Watch at 8:30

Colombia: all huff and puff. But not effective in the final third. Was pretty certain they’d bit Switzerland.

That’s going to be one staid QF. Best fit for Argentina, you’d think.

It's because they play wild and unpredictable without any real tactical discipline.

Senegal are the ones that really should have closed the game out, none of this "couldn't cope with big plodding Lukaku" nonsense. Congo and Egypt were going above and beyond themselves to be in that leading position, but the latter lost their poise and shape when that goal was disallowed. Too wound up and open after it and you could see the comeback was on the cards, though I expected it would go to extra time.

I wouldn't write them all in as a single entity, the situations were completely different.
CDR scored early and put up a valent attempt at blocking England out. It was only when England brought on Saka and Gordon that they crumbled. 69 minutes fight against Rashford and Madueke only to be faced with two fresh wingers was too much for them.

Egypt had never won a game at the world cup before this year. Not only did they get out of their group unbeaten, but passed through the first KO round. They were 2-0 up against Argentina and two things happened. They made substitutions that changed the way they play then they believed that refereeing decisions were going against them. They lost it, and it all collapsed. The pressure got to them it can happen to anyone.
