Updated. if Austria beats Algeria, Iran is in and Algeria out. If Algeria wins, iran is in and austria is out. If draw, Algeria is 3rd.

Norway vs Ivory coast, Portugal vs Croatia, Netherlands vs Morocco and Brazil vs Japan the picks of the round probably. Senegal vs Belgium and Mexico vs Ecuador pretty good too.

Doesn't matter anyways, 44 years after Gijón these two will play a make up friendship 0-0 draw with 0 shots

Going to Columbia/Ghana...was really hoping for Portugal to be in that match but I guess that's football isn't it.

So many of the matches in this round are uninteresting, but I guess that was to be expected with the bigger field.

Tournament will begin for real at 16.

The games are getting too early now. Brazil vs Japan at 6pm? Give me my middle of the night games!

Definitely heading this way so far

Conditions have to play a part now. Teams that have been relatively fortunate with the climate in their group games vs those that have played in conditions where they’ve probably lost 10lbs through sweat in hot and humid conditions, may be at an advantage. France have had it pretty bad, I think

My country is very lucky. We played the opening game of the world cup. And embarrassed ourselves.

Now we are also the first to play the first match of the knockout stages and might be the first to qualify for the last16

Argentina with a very easy route to a semi final. Shame Portugal didn't top the group so we at least got Messi Vs Ronaldo.

Quite a lot of games that I'm looking forward to in the R32.

Portugal fecked up by finishing second

We could have Argentina vs Portugal final.

Come on Bosnia you know what you have to do. You will be loved all over the world if you beat USA.

Of the favourites (bookies wise at least) , Argentina have the easiest run by far. Spain not far behind as a relatively clear run till the quarters. If England beat Congo, don’t think Mexico at the Azteca will be easy at all. France with tough games (other than Sweden most likely) all the way through.

Still cannot believe South Africa have qualified, they were the worst team I’d seen.

More cannon fodder games. Hopefully the WC will properly kickoff in last 16. This "expanded" format is diluting the quality of the WC. But it gives more countries a change to participate.

All that lengthy, drawn out group stage process, just to end up with 32 teams like we started the last world cup with!

If it was up to me they'd just change it to the same format as the FA cup. Open entry so you get rid of the annoying international breaks, then just straight knock out from the start.

Have people forgotten that a new seeding system was used for this World Cup for the first time to keep England, France Argentina and Spain apart until the semis?

People keep talking about easy draws but it was literally designed this way.

Well yes obviously but people aren't talking about that but about the difference of having a path of Sweden-Germany-Netherlands to the semi final (France) vs Cap Verde - Egypt - Columbia (Argentina).
That's where the big differences come in.

Some hard ones to predict there. Can Canada beat South Africa without pens?

It was, but Argies' run to the semis way easier than France, who are likely having Netherlands and Geramany.

I'm sure loads of the R32 will turn out better than they sound on paper, but beyond Ivory Coast-Norway and Portugal-Croatia, few enticing fixtures.

Well, I assume they’d be using tablets and things during tactical sessions. But I’m sure if they had to go old school, they would manage.

Debating the same myself. Would love SA to do us all a favor and send Jesse Marsch the feck home but Canada’s wingplay might be too much for them to handle.

South Africa didn’t impress in the first game but had a marginal improvement in the second. Still I feel the Canadians would have too much firepower.

Morocco - Netherlands and Brazil - Japan!

The way France are playing they might go out to Sweden. Not convinced by most of the big sides on that side of the bracket tbh.

Fair point. Only saw the first Netherlands game and wasn't that impressed. That could easily go to ET.
Brazil and Japan interesting match up, but think Brazil have too much quality.

I think it will turn out a fairly comfortable 3-1 or 4-1 stroll for the French. The Swedes lost 5-1 to the Dutch already.

The early timings suck for me. I can only watch 2am (UK time) or later live:(

It definitely should play out that way but it’s the sort of match that could catch France out if they come in as arrogant as they have in others.

Feel for yous across the pond. Pulled all-nighters in past World Cups but that sort of thing is much easier when you’re young !

Brazil vs Japan
Netherlands vs Morocco
Norway vs Ivory Coast
Portugal vs Croatia

Sad to lose so many strong and interesting teams already in RO32.

France has quite a difficult (estimated) path to the finals despite finishing 1st in their group:

Sweden -> Germany -> Netherlands/Morocco -> Spain -> Argentina

Don’t forget England-DR Congo.

AFC disappointing with just 2 teams through (Japan and Australia). I would have expected at least 2 more, although Iran has some valid excuses.

On the other hand: 9 AFCON teams is pretty impressive!

Hopefully it's a close game, but will be surprised. Sweden feel like Brentford level prem team. Cheering Gyokeres would feel dirty too.

I'm too old to stay up for a 3 or 4am game too. Been struggling to shake off a bug for a week and even getting up to watch a rerun of a game at 8am before work has been killing me.

Argentina either have the easiest draw but it's a path to the later stages absolutely littered with potential banana skins. They haven't faced any challenge in the group. They're not likely to face anyone you'd expect to pose much danger (the aforementioned banana skin potential notwithstanding) until the semi finals?

I'm not sure that's great preparation to winning the thing. Arguably they'll be the most rested by the time they get one of the major footballing nations, but will they be as sharp as teams that have come through some sterner tests and bettered them? I'd rather face Argentina in a semi final having had opportunity to dump out someone like Netherlands, Portugal, England etc, rather than turn up having barely broken a sweat to get there and find we're struggling for sharpness because we've not played a properly competitive match so far in the whole competition to get there.

On paper you can look at a list of teams and say they look like easier matches than the others. I don't think you can arrive at the semi finals with the team hotel quiz being the most competitive engagement you've been involved with since you've arrived and be in particularly great shape in terms of sharpness.
