World Cup Round of 32 Games

Solid win by Colombia and with no extra time

Of the 8 teams that finished third in the group stage, only one (Paraguay) has made it to the R16.

(Just saying, not implying that it was a mistake to go with 48 teams)

Really poor show from Ghana, didn't lay a glove on Colombia.
Forgot about Ghana They had no business at this stage as well. Same bucket as Tunisia. Sacking coach a month before the tournament, keys players injured and did not make squad. Jordan Ayew as their Ronaldo albatross.

I do love theColombian team.

Maybe the quality isn’t always top, but the effort is non stop and the chaos is just so Colombian. Hope they beat Switzerland and smash Argentina. That’s long overdue.

Going in to 1/16:

South America: 4/6 left (67 %)
North America: 3/6 left (50 %)
Europe: 7/16 left (44 % left)
Africa: 2/10 left (20 %)
Asia: 0/9 left (0 %)
Oceania: 0/1 left (0 %)

My prediction for next round:

South America: 3/6 left (50 %) Paraguay out
North America: 2/6 left (33 %) Canada out
Europe: 2/16 left (12.5 % left) Spain, Belgium, Norway, England, Switzerland out
Africa: 1/10 left (10 %) Egypt out
Asia: 0/9 left (0 %)
Oceania: 0/1 left (0 %)

Feels harsh especially towards England but Mexico edges it due to home advantage. Many of these ties are very even, expect penalties in at least two of the ties.

As I predicted nearly all the fancied sides have progressed with Germany being the only exception. That gives us a solid 15/16 matches, especially if you count Holland-Morocco as basically a toss-up -- they're at a similar level anyway.

And to be honest this is exactly how I like it. As I said before you want the underdogs to have their moments and create some excitement, but not too many of them to go through. With all due respect you don't want matchups like Austria-Bosnia or Australia-Algeria deep in the business end of any World Cup -- it's genuinely better when the stronger teams and big names get to play each other at this point onwards.

So which 8 do you fancy to progress?

Yeah, but I think it depends entirely on how they play, not so much on big names. I wouldn't mind semi finals consisting of Morocco, cap verde, México and Colombia at all...

Damn, farewell to Cape Verde, sounds like they have Argentina a great game. Hard to really look past the French or Spanish now though.

As weak as the Portuguese seemed vs Croatia I have never seen Spain have their way against Portugal before. Just think they cancel each other out. Portugals midfield nullifies Spains. Main difference is if Yamal can produce something as he is different than the other 22, but apart from him I think that tie is dead even.

I think the following teams will progress to the quarters: Morocco, France; Portugal, United States; Brazil, Mexico; Argentina and Colombia. But I do hope England go through.

Most of these R16 games look quite evenly matched with the exception of Canada-Morocco and Paraguay-France. In the other games I'm leaning slightly towards the 'favourites', especially when factoring in home advantage, to get the job done and advance.

It obviously depends but Morocco, Mexico and Colombia are a far cry from Austria, Bosnia and DR Congo for instance. The latter kills the excitement and prestige of the later stages.

I just want to see whoever is playing well go through. Doesn't matter if it's an underdog or a big name. I don't see any reason to want bigger teams that are playing consistently bad football go through.

We got the exact same eight. Only difference is that I hope Mexico go through in their home soil but I do feel for England as I think they have a decent team and some players I like a lot. Tuchel... Meh. An improvement on Nagelsmann but that doesn't say a lot. Really doesn't.
Colombia black horse, we are beating Argentina, mark my words.
This I can believe. People tend to underestimate how familiar certain teams from the same continent are with each other and how that bridges the gap. For example Colombia knows Argentina in and out and will always give them trouble, Chile used to be the same. Senegal is always a tough cookie for Morocco. Portugal same vs Spain.

If Williams is fit Portugal will get embarrassed for sure. It might happen even if he isn’t.

Not seen the Argentina v Cape Verde highlights just yet. My Twitter feed is full of videos, of the referee apparently acting in favour of Argentina. Was he really that bad or was that a overreaction?

The refs are normally quite bad at WC's in general. Croatia equaliser being ruled out yesterday was a travesty and I wouldn't mind Portugal winning the WC.

It is an overreaction, ref was fine, nothing compared to the Portugal game

I don't. The sweet spot is as follows: most of the strong, more established sides progressing with just one or two underdogs punching above their weight to keep things fun and interesting. Unfancied sides typically park the bus effectively, play a cynical game or score a set-piece/jammy goal to nick it. This, of course, is a valid approach to playing football but not necessarily what you want to see in the latter stages of a major international tournament.

Superstars like Kane or Mbappe or Messi or Vinicius Jr or Yamal can, and often will, produce moments of magic (be it a burst of pace, a dribble, a clinical finish or vision) that players from underdog sides can't. You ultimately want to see this; you pay and stay up late into the night to watch this.

Yeah, I mean as much as I want England to go through I just can't see it. But I will say one thing: if they do manage to beat Mexico at the Azteca they'll be confident enough to feel that they can beat anyone, even France.

When’s the latest we’ll find out about the England game being rescheduled? Surely they’ll need plenty of notice since it could be getting playing tomorrow night?

Already confirmed to be at the original scheduled time.

Just portugese/cr7 fans trying to distract others away from their own game's ref decisions

What a goal by messi. That first touch was outrageous. Privilege to watch his career.

It's going to be played at the original time.

Argentina definitely got the rub of the green from the ref but it was generally smallish stuff no big game changing decision e.g. letting Argentina run down the clock after scoring, not giving romero yellow cards on multiple occasions, not awarding free kicks

Paraguay are going to get slaughtered by France aren’t they?

I hope Paraguay give them a good game and also drag them into a proper scrap like they did to Germany.

Will be interesting to see how this French team react in that kind of game.

Yes they’re on crack it’s that good. They seem a little disorganized to me though. Just missing something in their play to elevate them to top tier.

Haven't seen much of Colombia due to the kick off times but they're a defensively solid side with genuine WC in Diaz in final third and hardworking midfield so it's a solid mix.

Their results over last few years have been good, Argentina only beat them narrowly in 2024 Copa America final so I don't think that would be potential easy QF match up at all.

Of course they lack a good CF like so many other nations outside of the elite contenders. Just shows what an idiot Jhon Duran has been in last 18 months. Thrown away a massive opportunity with his attitude at club level.

Cape Verde just single handedly justified the expansion of the tournament
