This is probably the most curious thing to me regarding this window, more than not signing a LB.
When Dorgu arrived, I understand him to be an option for the more defensive LWB, while Amad or even Anthony looked a candidate for a more attacking RWB. Dorgu as I understood it had played mostly LB before, and a good deal RW as well, and a little bit of LW.
He didn’t really impress as a LWB, though tbf not that many players impress under Amorim. When Amorim left i was expecting to see him more often as a LB back up to Shaw than a LW back up to Cunha. But Shaw was everpresent, and when Cunha was out, Dorgu really impressed and surprised a lot of us, as opposed to the one time I saw him at LB for us.
Regardless of these few games, going into this season with Cunha, Rashford on LW and Shaw, Amass on LB, I expected Dorgu to feature a bit at LB in preseason. When Amass shared every game with Shaw while the Rashford rumours/debate proliferated, I assumed like probably a few others that the idea was that Rashford was probably leaving while Amass was probably considered ready or almost ready.
So when Amass all of a sudden was rumored to get sold while Rashford was integrated into the squad with tales of merry rejoinders, it certainly confused me as to why Dorgu was never played at LB. It was actually the only reason I felt sure that we would buy a LB this particular window.
Shaw + the Dorgu I expected to see would IMO be a slightly weak link but not at all a big issue if the idea was to get a better LB in next year than we could afford this year. It’s just the fact that he never appeared as LB in preseason that gives me the impression that a cock-up has happened in that position..
