If we're leaving ourselves short again, that's anything but quietly competent. It's loud and gross negligence, when we're supposed to believe, from the mouth of our own CEO, that we're aiming for a title challenge. We need Champions League football every season from now on to even have a chance of doing that in the next decade and jeopardizing it by relying in key positions on Mount and Shaw of all people, is the pinnacle of stupidity. It would also leave ourselves with far too much to do next year with the need of several center-backs, full-backs and god knows what else. But that's another story altogether. It’s very dull, but I completely agree. We need dull. We need to be quietly competent. We can’t shed the reputation of the previous decade of utter nonsense overnight. Im glad we’ve walked away from deals. Glad we’re doing deals out of the blue.
For what it’s worth, I think it’s only this week that the entire market has started to heat up. Between the World Cup and market inflation (thanks Chelsea and Spurs) it’s been pretty quiet out there, but it’ll get busier now. We absolutely had to have 2 midfielders through the door ahead of the opening game, which we’ve done. A new left back, third midfielder or a forward? Not so much. We have Shaw, 3 midfielders and enough forwards to take us into September. There’s no panic or rush to do those deals.
I fully expect a left back and a forward player of some sort to arrive (I’d like Endrick on a loan to buy, because it’d be exciting and be nice to pull that shite on someone else) pending Zirkzee going (and probably Rashford too). I think a third midfielder has been scuppered by the Ugarte injury and we’ll have to make do and mend with Mount and kids as a fourth midfielder, but that’s just bad luck.
I agree there's still time for now and we most likely don't need all our business conducted for the first two games due to our fortunate starting fixtures. But every day this radio silence and seeming inacitivity persists increases the chances of an inadequte transfer window and from a supposed best-in-class football operation that can never be the standard we as fans should be willing to tolerate.
Jim and Ineos are already complicit. If there was never a real plan to get full control of the club, or some understanding, that the Glazers would, at least to some degree, get of their asses up and invest into the club for once, so that the actual sporting side of the business may act unimpeded and the stadium can become a reality, then what was this whole scheme supposed to be about? Besides saving the Glazers' blushes perhaps, after years of underinvestment and ever increasing scrutiny of their failing tenure as owners. The club have brought it's fans to their knees. Asking for Sander Berge and not actual world class players.
INEOS weren't worth it. If the Glazers had just overhauled recruitment we'd have probably been better on the pitch today.
In it's current state we will stay severely handicapped for the foreseeable future and grand plans like Project 150, or whatever they're going to call the next iteration of it, once it becomes obvious how much of a pipe dream it always was, will just remain delusional PR spin amongst the reality of a terminally crippled football club.
