The "there's 6 weeks left in the window" argument doesn't really hold this year. By the time the window closes, some leagues such as Ligue 1 will have played 6 games, teams aren't going to sell important players at this point of the season.
That will depend how much they need the money. I think there will be a lot of late deals across Europe.

Why do you worry so much about things that you can't control?
Because you are emotionally invested in the club. You get angry, frustrated, elated, overjoyed when you are emotionally invested. It will be weird to feel joy when we win something, feel dejected when we lose and then suddenly in transfer window, to become emotionless statues.

I know there is a long time till the window closes, but pre-season is coming soon and it's been awfully quiet in the last couple of weeks.

There should be a fair few clubs who were already in financial trouble before the covid situation arose, shouldn't there?
Probably, but they might be even more desperate in a month's time. The fans in stadiums picture might be clearer.

Honest question, are we actually doing... anything? Like, at all? Are we even bothering trying to flog our duds?

Hopefully it's the quiet before the storm, but it's just dead on the news front. Not even the most ambitious supposed ITKs are putting stuff out there.

What are we doing?

Yeah, but you don't know what's happening behind-the-scenes. Money moves around, multiple people are involved, contracts have to be reviewed, it takes time, some are more meticulous than others. There's no need for the hysteria.

When are players due to return to training? Ideally we will make any signings soon after that.
I think Ole said the players get a couple of weeks off. 2-3 maybe. We don’t play opening weekend so safe to say players won’t report back until next week. I heard on the radio last week that the Greece bound players were asked to come back early due to quarantine timing before training camp. I think that can be cut short by testing though.

Getting our transfers in early is so vital that I cannot possibly overstate its importance. To a lot of people it seems inconsequential, and I can't fathom why. They just think that it's ok, as long as we get them before the window closes. That kind of thinking is so reductive it's unreal. Chelsea get their players in early, which means they have longer to learn and adapt a new system, which also means that by the time the season begins they can hit the ground running from game one. This benefit is lost on people. Getting a great start and gelling from the get-go can be the difference between 3rd and 1st. Momentum begets momentum. If we're not getting Sancho, then we need to get those alternative or extra targets in the meantime and make sure that we're ready to go by the first game.

Hope I’m wrong but it feels like Sancho or nobody. Might be happy to play blink with Dortmund until October

If they think adding Sancho turns us into title challengers then maybe they just want to put everything into getting him

Would be one explanation for the lack of news

With the price they are demanding, I'm certain that its Sancho and thats it!

Its going to be an interesting summer if Ed doesnt manage to pull it off.

Only Sancho feels like too little anyway. Although it would be a big boost to our squad.

I don't have a crystal ball on me, sorry. We're far more likely to sign at least one player than not though, no need to hit the panic button just yet.
Oh boy, adding only one player to a squad that has champions league football to look forward to is a recipe for disaster considering the manager wouldn't make a sub until the 85th minute owing to lack of confidence in his squad.

Ole is too wedded to the club but if this was Jose, he'd protest by playing the U16 side in the cup games.

Clearly we are looking at big Sancho.

If it happens it will likely be the biggest transfer in the world this season, and given its in the middle of a pandemic, and we all face massive uncertainty it was always going to take longer.

Dortmund and Sancho probably still have expectations that we’re valid 6 months ago, it just not the case anymore. That takes time to overcome. Was always going to take time given the circumstances.

The news of the Pau Torres front also evaporated quickly. I have no idea what's happening behind the scenes, but we do look very slow out of the blocks in transfer windows. Unless we are 100% sure we will get our targets, this could be a very risky approach

Don't understand why we are not looking at Thiago, Kai Havertz, Thiago etc. It can't be our strategy to stay away from all 3 types of singings - i.e. peaking player, young talent, experienced player respectively!

At least 2 of these deals can be done on the cheap!

Yes. But based on previous transfer windows, it seems a mini-hysteria is warranted. We seem to be the only top club that struggles to push things over the line. Even our CEO had mentioned previously that he and his team struggle to sign one player, leave along multiple players in a window.

We have an opportunity to build on something, again. It will be foolishness to undersign and lose the momentum. The next window or summer will be too late to make amends. Lot of things change over a season. And we have a history of giving contract extensions to existing below average players, when we cant get our signings in a window.

I understand that fans can't do anything if the club does not sign anyone, but that's the emotional investment fans have.

I know Howson divides opinion on here but he makes a good point about how appointing a DOF would stop Utd being taken for a ride time and again

Cant believe the way our transfer business is going so far, we need bodies before the season starts.

Chelsea are on a rampage in the market and buying loads of fantastic players while we sit about with our thumb up our ass.

Pay the money get sancho, then focus on a defender. It is really that simple.

Weird thing is that for the first time we don't just need quality but we need good bench players as well . That is the most annoying thing for me , we haven't even managed to sign a single player to provide depth even

Usually, we get linked to every player on earth once the silly season begins. This time its quite the opposite. The optimist in me thinks we are working quietly in the background to get deals done. I know thats very unlike Woody. But one can always hope.
Hope is all we have got

If it was that simple it would already be done. Maybe we don't have the money some of our fans think we do.

And for the love of god can people stop going on about Chelsea. They are making up for a transfer ban this summer. Stop thinking we can compete with them in this window because we can't. Nobody else can either.

We've had a shit window so far, we're almost a month since it opened (27th July) and the above is all that's occurred despite it being clear as day that we've struggled with lack of quality in our squad. I normally call for patience but this has been abysmal, given the schedule for next season and the lack of pre season it's honestly been terrible. Covid isn't something that jumped out at us and caught us by surprise, we've had enough time to prepare for this window and the owners have so far produced sweet feck all.
Brilliant post we are a complete shitshow

Glad someone else can understand the benefit of getting new players sorted before the season starts

Chelsea have money, but I feel that is just a sad excuse that's sprouted to hide how bad we are in the market.

I can only wish we can have a plan like theirs, which clearly they've had for a while, managed to get top players in not overly priced this window (apart from havert), even with fourth they knew they have to do a lot to catch up the two above everyone. And most importantly they get deals done quickly.

I also rate how good they are at moving players on and always get decent money back.

Sickening really, and yes I'm overreacting and what not, but jeez, fed up at how long we take to do any deals.

Remember 3 weeks ago when some fans on here were saying

30m for Lingard, 15 to 20m for Pereira, 20m for Smalling etc......

I think a dose of reality has landed. The most sellable one of the 3 is apparently going to go to Roma for 3m upfront and 17m to come at a later date so say the rumours.

I think just shows the actual reality we face. Our deadwood are overpaid and not very good with the exception of Smalling and we can't even get a good fee for him because he only wants to join Roma so they are playing hardball.

I have to say overreacting, in the rare case that we have some crazy end to the window and buy all our top choices and strengthen in the areas we need to plus adding to squad depth. Although who am I kidding here, Bruno was a drag, Maguire was a drag. Sancho will end up being a drag, we may get him or not. But I think that'd be it if we do.

Why are any of you surprised. You have been watching Woodward operate for seven years now - this is the United way.

I just hope the fans remember this if we end up not signing anyone. Ole got top4 and badly needed reinforcements. Easy to blame the manager by December when we are losing games and have a couple of players injured in the process. But the blame should fully rest on the board if that ever happens.

I'm in agreement, all of our eggs in one basket, and I think its a game of brinkmanship with Dortmund to see who blinks first.
It's possible that we wanted Grealish, but thats been blown out of the water by that valuation, and I don't think a CB was ever on the agenda.

It is so fun watching Chelsea killing it in the transfer window, while we do nada.
Even if Chelsea are spending lots after a transfer ban, the fact that they're still getting the deals done in an expedient manner is impressive. If United was spending after a two window transfer ban it doesn't automatically follow that we'd have anywhere near the same efficiency as Chelsea have done thus far.

Chelsea also have an owner who doesn't care about profits. He's never ever ever going to make his money back on Chelsea is he? Even if he sells the club one day for more than he bought it for he's going to have to get a ridiculous offer to match what he's put in for transfers over the years.

The difference is he doesn't care. Roman bought Chelsea for a hobby. He loves football. He wants them to succeed. Our owners bought us as an investment opportunity for their family. To make them money.

We will never be remotely the same as them.

The lack of preparation, yet again, is a disgrace. I don't doubt we'll make signings but we should have been aggressive in getting them done or at least in more advanced stages. Before anyone says otherwise, it's clear we aren't in advanced talks with anyone or we'd know about it. Hardly any transfers escape media speculation. Chelsea are currently showing us how it's supposed to be done if you're serious about catching up. They are and always have been extremely ambitious and sporting success is their goal whereas ours is the complete opposite which is so incredibly frustrating.

Liverpool are going to be so motivated again to win the title this year to catch us on 20. That alone should be enough to have everyone at the club doing everything to stop that.
