Welcome to Manchester reception committee
Top of the league United play third place Chelsea. Even better, we're not just top, we've got a game in hand. The headline has a certain ring to it, but unfortunately Chelsea seem to have woken up since losing to Liverpool in the opening game of the season.

Chelsea are formidable. Our track record against them has been painful. But like all records, at some point it has to be broken. Live on Sky would seem like a good moment to do just that :smirk:

A team that has both Sam Kerr and Pernille Harder in their side, can afford a few off days. Team performance will trump
Individual performance though, so
We’re definitely in with a chance this time, even if our biggest attacking stars are not at their best (Toone and Russo).

Park the bus, get a draw

Sounds sad but honestly this would be a success

Nervous from Thorisdóttir & Turner so far, but then again defense still holds.

0-0 at half time, Chelsea very much playing like a team who’s used to these big occasions in comparison to us, but we’re definitely getting at them and holding our own worrying them on the break. Earps hasn’t looked particularly threatened at any point.

Looking at that Le Tissier incident again we were a bit fortunate to not concede a penalty. Apart from that there's not been a lot of chances, Chelsea have had the better of things without creating much while we have occasionally threatened.

I’m still not sold. I don’t think VAR would overrule the ref with it if it were in use, Reiten was halfway down when the Le Tissier slipped into her. The lack of Reiten appealing would probably have worked in our favour too.

Definitely have seen them given, but incredibly soft.

1-0 Chelsea, been nervy playing out from the back a few times and it got punished on this occasion.

Game over, you would think. We looked really ragged after the opening goal and that's a high quality move by Chelsea to take advantage.

Just shows we still aren't at Arsenal/Chelsea's level,in regards to City we will see in December.

3-1, Cuthbert. Last goal could have come at either end at the death there.

As mentioned before, Chelsea just look so much more at home in these big games. We’re getting there, but not just yet.

Crappy crappy day for both our teams
Girls still make us proud, occupying high place in the table, showing some attacking football this season... unlike the money grabbing statists who only top 4 will secure is in EL stage group.

Stoneys biggest blunder was to take MT from Chelsea who could not wait to get rid of her!

No worries
It's the same old story when we face the top teams in the league. Again we concede multiple goals early in the second half due to individual errors and lapses in concentration, and make it nearly impossible for us to come back and get a result. Chelsea are obviously a fantastic team, but these games are why it's premature for us to assume we'll be in the top 3, let alone challenge for the title - we have to show we're capable of getting big results consistently against these teams, and we just aren't there yet.

Next game is Arsenal away who are looking very strong this season. That could go the same way as this game. It's so important in these games that we not only show our quality, but remain focused and disciplined defensively throughout the whole match, or we'll get punished again. To be fair, I thought we did a good job of holding on to possession and not needlessly giving it away all the time, but there were enough warning signs that you could see what was going to happen, and sure enough Millie's error was the one that cost us.

Come on, we're only a couple of years in. Those guys have been at it for years now. We've done really well all things considered and only just missed out on Europe last season.

We need to hang on to the likes of Russo and just keep building the team.

was anyone expecting a title challenge?
3rd place is the aim and will be an achievement

I expected us to at least not look like deers in the headlights when facing top 3 teams

I get that, and I know it's a huge challenge to step up to the big clubs in this league. But it's just incredibly frustrating to watch the same thing happen time and time again once we come up against the top 3. As a club, we've put a lot of pressure on ourselves to break into the top 3 this year after consistently missing out, and we've started the season very well (in the league at least). But ultimately, our season is gonna be defined by our results against Chelsea, Arsenal and City. If we panic every time we face them and can't win even once against these teams, then the outcome will be the same as previous seasons. At some point we have to stop thinking "Wow, Chelsea are so good" and start thinking "Actually, why can't we beat them?", and I do think at this point it's a mental barrier that we have to break through, rather than tactics or individual talent.
