The Women's World Cup will take place in France, 7th June – 7 July.

The BBC have the UK TV rights. I’m expecting that they’ll put England and Scotland matches, and some other big games, on the broadcast channels (or at least red button) and that some other matches will be online. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48137701

Please use this thread for squad lists, links to articles, player profiles, social media stuff, and general discussion. We can throw any ticket/travel news in here as well.

I’m going to be in France for the closing stages, so who knows – you may even get the occasional photo from the Eiffel Tower or a restaurant review if I'm in the mood. Anyone else going?

I’ll put up a match thread to cover the group stage games as we get closer.

Women's World Cup groups
Group A:
France, South Korea, Norway, Nigeria
Group B: Germany, China, Spain, South Africa
Group C: Australia, Italy, Brazil, Jamaica
Group D: England, Scotland, Argentina, Japan
Group E: Canada, Cameroon, New Zealand, Netherlands
Group F: USA, Thailand, Chile, Sweden

Top two in each group go through, as do the four best third place teams. Matches from the 7-20th June.

R16: 22-24 June
QF: 27-29 June
SF: 2-3 July
Final: 7 July

The semifinals and final are in Lyon. Other matches are spread around the country.

England have two group stage matches in Nice and one in Le Havre - which are about as far apart as they could get. Scotland play in Nice (against England), Rennes and Paris - which sounds like a nice tourist tour itinerary as well as a good set of venues.

England squad:
Goalkeepers: Karen Bardsley (Man City), Mary Earps (Wolfsburg), Carly Telford (Chelsea)

Defenders: Millie Bright (Chelsea), Lucy Bronze (Lyon), Rachel Daly (Houston Dash), Alex Greenwood (Man Utd), Steph Houghton (captain, Man City), Abbie McManus (Man City), Demi Stokes (Man City) Leah Williamson (Arsenal)

Midfielders: Karen Carney (Chelsea), Jade Moore (Reading), Jill Scott (Man City), Lucy Staniforth (Birmingham City), Georgia Stanway (Man City), Keira Walsh (Man City)

Forwards: Toni Duggan (Barcelona) Fran Kirby (Chelsea), Beth Mead (Arsenal), Nikita Parris (Man City), Jodie Taylor (Seattle Reign), Ellen White (Birmingham City)

Izzy Christiansen is probably the biggest missing name. She injured her ankle in March, and though she's now back in training, Neville had decided to go with the ones he knows are fit.

England squad announcement was done one name at a time.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/football/48189116
Doing the one at a time thing might be gimmicky but Phil Neville says:
“We wanted each player to have a special moment when their name was revealed, knowing they are going to a World Cup, as I never did as a player.

"It is the biggest thing in their lives and something they’ve dreamed about.

“We have to make these players visible, we want everybody around the world to buy in to what will be the biggest Women’s World Cup of all time.”

Can't wait to see the first Ballon d'Or winner in action. Oh wait, at the age of 23 she's already well retired from the national team.

Looking forward to this, enjoyed the 2015 WC in Canada very much.

With that and the Copa America should keep me just about ticking over until Wimbledon.

:smirk: She says that she stopped playing for them, because she feels the Norwegian FA lacks respect for the women’s game. Which sounds vague enough to be a bit like the star falling out with the movie director over creative differences. Her sister Andrine who plays for PSG isn't in the squad either - but I don't know the players well enough to know whether she should have been.

Norway squad -
Goalkeepers: Ingrid Hjelmseth (Stabaek), Cecilie Fiskerstand (LSK), Oda Maria Hove Bogstad (Arna-Bjornar)

Defenders: Ingrid Moe Wold (LSK), Cecilie Redisch Kvamme (Sandviken), Maria Thorisdottir (Chelsea), Maren Mjelde (Chelsea), Stine Hovland (Sandviken)

Midfielders: Synne Skinnes Hansen (LSK), Kristine Minde (Wolfsburg), Frida Leonhardsen Maanum (Linkpoing), Vilde Bøe Risa (Kopparbergs/Goteborg), Ingrid Syrstad Engen (LSK), Amalie Vevle Eikeland (Sandviken), Guro Reiten (LSK), Karina Sævik (Kolbotn), Caroline Graham Hansen (Wolfsburg), Emilie Nautnes (Arna-Bjornar)

Forwards: Emilie Haavi (LSK), Therese Sessy Asland (LSK), Isabell Herlovsen (Kolbotn), Lisa-Marie Karlseng Utland (Rosengard), Elise Hove Thorsnes (LSK)

Hard to see past France/USA. Despite USA struggling in friendlies earlier this year, they'll still be very good. Entire team was pre season competing against sides that were middle of the season. They'll have the reverse advantage this time with being mid season competing mainly against sides that have just finished grueling club seasons. Spain capable of causing a bit of an upset I think, will give Germany a good game in the group, can beat any of the sides in a one off game probably. Really looking forward to it, 2015 was a really good watch.

Goalkeepers: Sarah Bouhaddi (Lyon), Solene Durand (Guingamp), Pauline Peyraud-Magnin (Arsenal).

Defenders: Julie Debever (Guingamp), Sakina Karchaoui (Montpellier), Amel Majri (Lyon), Gridge Mbock Bathy Nka (Lyon), Eve Perisset (Paris St Germain), Wendie Renard (Lyon), Marion Torrent (Montpellier), Aissatou Tounkara (Atletico Madrid).

One notable omission: The top scorer in the French League (20 year old Marie-Antoinette Katoto of PSG) isn’t in the squad, the manager Corinne Diacre doesn't seem to like her attitude, or something.

Scotland had their send-off match tonight - they beat Jamaica 3-2. Kirsty Smith played the whole match. Liz Arnot came on at halftime. The team was probably pretty close to the one that will start against England. They played at Hampden in front of an 18000+ crowd (the best the Scotland women had had previously was around 4000.

Cuthbert probably got the best goal of the evening:

Canada is looking very strong defensively, but might not have enough going forward to get through too many knockouts. Still, quite optimistic.

Buchanan and Lawrence are standout defenders, Zadorsky and Chapman are pretty good so the back 4 is the strength of the team.

Fleming (small skillful central midfielder) and Sinclair (basically the Zlatan of the Women's game as a 9/10 who creates for others and scores consistently using size and technique, right down to outclassing her hardworking but not as skilled teammates at international level ) are the best players in the front 6 for me.

Beckie (forward at Man City) is a good all-around player and Scott an experienced and destructive if limited on the ball DM, but the other 2 spots are shakier. Schmidt has talent and is playing deeper than normal which could suit her but disappointed last World Cup and she or another midfielder has to step up (Quinn a CB/DM, seems the likeliest according to the hardcore fans) and one of the attackers (Rose, Prince, Leon or the highest rated youngster we have, Huitema) needs to get really hot for a couple of weeks.

Can't help but feel that we might be 1-2 players short of winning it all, so I'd set the over/under as Quarter-Finalists, but hopefully some luck and low-scoring games make for a deep run.

Jamaica have probably had the worst warm up match in history there. Shaw is now a doubt for the tournament and she is their best player by a country mile. Couple others also picked up injuries.

I saw that Shaw had gone off injured - I haven't seen any injury updates yet myself. Hopefully it won't be serious enough to stop her playing in France.

Same. She's the team's best chance of being competitive.

Erin Cuthbert's class, won me a nice amount of money when she bagged the only 2 goals against Arsenal away.

In terms of the rankings:
1 USA (2015 WC winners, finalists in 2011)
2 Germany (historically the top European team)
3 England
4 France
5 Canada
6 Australia
7 Japan (2015 WC finalists, winners in 2011)
8 Netherlands (2017 Euros winners)

Japan seem to be underrated in the betting odds, mostly off the back of friendly matches where they've played their youngsters. It's hard to guess how good a bet England are, because their form has been all over the place since they qualified. They've won some games while looking weak, but lost/drawn when they've looked ok - they'll certainly need to defend setpieces better. Spain might be better than their thirteenth place ranking suggests.

Some groups (including Jamaica's) look very unpredictable. The European teams are mostly in better shape than in the past, mostly due to their leagues (or national squads) going pro or semipro. On the face of it, there's a real chance that the African and South American teams (including Brazil) will have to rely on the third place route to get out of the groups.

Somewhat random, but an interesting example of the way women's teams are starting to get their own commercial sponsors - sometimes with firms who have been priced out of men's football. Seat sponsor the Spanish Women's Copa and national team and have just extended that sponsorship until 2021.

The women were there to do a photoshoot with the sponsor. The press say they hadn't been told that they were being given their own cars.

England lose 0-1. Toothless performance really - decent all round play, but weak in the final third, and sluggish in front of goal. New Zealand's goal came after a bit of slow defending and a goalkeeping blunder.

It's also time for the BBC to go into buildup mode.

BBC1, 10:30 tonight on the England team.

On Tuesday night, it's Scotland on BBC2 at 11:15. The show aired on BBC Scotland last week.

Agree, thought Greenwood had a good cross on her, Parris didn't make enough runs or options for team mates, stuck in the same position most of the match, she needed to drift wide sometines to create space for team mates, thought Lucy Staniforth, used the ball really well.

Think up front they have a bit of an issue, the Zealanders keeper was decent, thought England just needed to move the ball quicker.

Next weeks game against Scotland should be interesting.

I really dislike articles and comments like these. I've no idea why Women expect to be paid the same as men when the product doesn't bring in anywhere near as much money in revenue or have as big of audience. Think the mens World cup brings in $6 billion and the womens brings in around $130 million. Whilst there are huge strides to be made regarding equality within the womens game, I really don't think they have much of a claim here at all.

The equal pay thing is only really an issue around the USA men's and women's national teams. They've got a specific situation there - the women do bring in the trophies and the audience, but still don't get equal pay from the national association.

World Cup prize money is a different matter, though putting the revenue raised directly back into the competition would help. FIFA say they are spending on growing the women's game, but the lack of transparency and history of corruption doesn't help deal with the lack of trust there.

FIFA uses a solidarity fund model when distributing money to national FA's for example. All the affiliates get some money, they all get about $1.5m for "adminstration" plus more ff they can offer identifiable development project costs - these take the standard FIFA grant to about $4m per national FA.

Leaving aside the fact that seemingly altruistic model helped keep Sepp Blatter in power for years, it also offers a principle - FIFA says it wants to grow the game, and make it available for everyone. That's where the question arises: if it's worth subsidising Andorra (population 77,000) - then do FIFA really apply the same logic to the women's game.

As a start they could make those (or bigger?) grants dependant on the local FAs actually backing their women's teams and making sure coaching/pitches are available for girls teams. Of course that takes us back to transparency again - some of the affiliates aren't actually providing coaching/pitches for their men's/boys' teams, they're just enjoying the job titles.

I completely agree. It's ridiculous how people view equality these days. It's basically because you're a "chef/cook" at maccies, you want the same rages at Gordon Ramsay because it's the same thing.

Hope solo is just an idiot who thinks she should be paid DDG's wages.

Actually, the only equal pay argument she mentions is related to the US national team. She wants to see the US men's goalkeeper and the US women's goalkeeper treated the same when they're on national team duty.

The case they're arguing is that actually in the US national team case the women bring in as much money to the FA as the men.

Toni Duggan, Barcelona and England, being interviewed by the Guardian.
https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...d-barcelona-womens-world-cup?CMP=share_btn_tw

On equality:
“We played at the Wanda [Metropolitano], which was amazing, but then the next week they’re creating a penalty spot 10 minutes before the games start. Equality for me is having a pitch to play on and hot showers in the changing rooms, before we talk about the money we get.”

On pay:
“No. Because we don’t bring in the money that the men do – we’re not as successful as them yet...they’re on a bigger scale than me, they have more fans, are more popular."
But that of course the women do want more money in the game (and their pay packets)

And on fans - she reckons the English crowds are still too nice, but:
“There’s a picture of me celebrating (at Atletico's ground) and behind me there’s actually a man putting one finger up,” she recalls. “I’m not promoting that or saying it’s a good thing but it kind of showed what it meant. You could feel the passion in the stadium that day. It was a real atmosphere, it was a massive game and it was only a league game."

Which reminded me a bit of a young Giggs talking about favourite teams to play and saying Leeds on the basis that, "they hate us so much, it makes it seem important."

She's always been on her high horse over everything.

It's fair enough about national teams. However, pay shouldn't matter. Don't some nations just give all their national team wages to charity or something? Playing for your country is about pride. I'd pay to play for my country tbh.

I do understand the women's game in the US is above the mens though, but surely that would work through sponsorships anyway? Most high profile sports people make most their money from that right?

I’m really looking forward to this World Cup, but I’m very concerned about England. We are really struggling in front of goal, if Scotland turn up on Sunday and I think they will, I think we might struggle to get a point. Japan are still a very good side too and Argentina are a bit of an unknown, they are capable of both playing well and being bloody awful.

I fancy France to win it.

In 1971 an England women's team (actually a group of mostly teenage amateurs who played for a team in Oxfordshire) played Argentina in Mexico in one of the early women's World Cup competitions that weren't organised by FIFA. When they got there they discovered they were playing at the Azteca Stadium in front of a 90,000 crowd.

Last night, some of the England women who played in that tournament met some of the Argentinian women who played - they were all over in France for the game.

The story of the '71 team for anyone who's curious:

The weather in Le Havre is warm (28c) and sunny. Just to prove that I'm now in France I've taken a picture of the soap opera on French TV at the moment, the one with the match countdown clock running in the to right corner. Nice
