A never-nude? I thought he just liked cut-offs.
EDGAR:

ENIGMA:

EDGAR TACTICS:

Formation: 4-4-2 Diamond

The foundation of this defence is the GOAT keeper, Gordon Banks. Ahead of him are the bulwark of defence led by Paolo Maldini and Norbert Dormann. Domann was a classic sweeper who can also play defensive midfielder who has plied his trade in Bundesliga for Schalke and Dortmund. Flanking them are Nagatomo a industrious and dynamic left back of Inter Milan and Rainer Bonhof.

Nemanja Matic acts as defensive pivot with two industrious midfielder in Effenberg and Schuster providing the thrust from the midfield. Effenberg's all action style compliments with Schuster who can pull strings from the midfield with his exemplary passing.

Maradona acts as classic #10, spearhead of the midfield. With a robust set up behind him, he is positioned to have a prime impact on the match. Ahead of him are Seeler, a complete goal scoring forward and Eusebio in his favourite free floating role. A attack that is complete and lethal to any defence.

Why I'll win: Defensive solidity to keep goals allowed respectable. But top notch attack to outscore my opponents. Given Engima's team, I predict this will be a 3-1 or even a 4-2 match in my favour.

ENIGMA TACTICS:

Formation: 4-3-3

Defence:

Bobby Carlos is playing as the more attacking full back whereas Gerets is the balanced one. A physical and fast pair of CB's with Thuram and Walker taking center stage.

Midfield:
Toninho Cerezo is anchoring the midfield. He is in his older self but with Samp he managed to win CWC, went to the EC finals and produced a mesmerizing performance at the Intercontinental Cup being elected MoTM. KdB and Sir Bobby complete the midfield bringing work rate and flair on the ball. Both are occupying their favorite zones inside left and right channels.

Attack:
In attack we have Real's legend Amancio as RWF and Clint Dempsey who isn't the most flashy name on the team sheet but was a consistent PL player for 7 years in a row producing two fantastic seasons at Fulham earning him transfer at Spurs. Gigi Riva is leading the line providing the typical #9 presence in the box and blending well in the overall team style.

I think I may have asked this question before but didn't Cerezo play as an AM at Sampdoria? @Enigma_87
Samp played 4-4-2 at the time so he was paired with another CM. He scored an occasional goal, but usually in a raid from deep position like against Milan in 90'

Cerezo could play anywhere really in the CM, but I like him best as a holding/DLP midfielder where he can initiate attacks from deep and take the ball out of the defensive line. Which in this game is handy for us as none of Walker and Thuram are really specialists in that area.

Great pick as a 33+ player - stood out loads for Samp and Sao Paulo then.

Cheers, Gio.

Yes, he produced memorable performances in the IC and Sao Paulo managed to defeat Barca's dream team and Capello's Milan back to back in 92/93.

Thanks you too!

Have to say attack is top notch, but that defence(minus Maldini) looks like something that Boehly would muster on the transfer market. :D

Some info on that Doorman guy? I can't find even English wiki page of him and seems like he only played 60 games in the Buli, rest was journeyman in lower divisions.

I'm curious what others think about Bonhof at RB too. I thought you are going to use him there but seems a bit of a waste to me a bit like Neeskens at RB.

Yea, they are casualties of Sjor's rampage! From what brief notes, I can find, he was a ball playing CB type who was comfortable as a DM.

As a teenager he was with FC Schalke 04 in the final of the German A youth championship in both 1975 and 1976, after the junior championship in 1976 he moved up to the Schalke Bundesliga squad. The libero was also captain in various national teams of the DFB. From 1976 to 1979 he played for Schalke 04 and in 1977 he became German runner-up with the team. In 1979, Norbert Dörmann moved to district rivals Borussia Dortmund, for whom he was active in the Bundesliga for two years. From 1981 to 1987 he also played for Alemannia Aachen and Rot-Weiss Oberhausen in the 2nd Bundesliga.

I don't think the comparison with Neeskens is apt. Neeskens only had occassional sub appearances at RB iirc. Bonhof was more of a career RB who then moved to midfield. He's natural there.

 I'm fine with Bonhof at RB. He seems to have racked up plenty of playing time there, and it's a good use of his skill set, particularly his engine and his good delivery from wide areas. It does somehow contribute to that wider 'bought at a jumble sale' feel around the defence though, unfairly in Bonhof's individual case. It's hard to judge this Dormann character as anything other than an uber-sheep in the absence of any evidence to the contrary. Options were thin but there were a few players with significantly more promising CVs to be had.

I thought you are going to leave him on the bench but noticed you had like 5 strikers on the team, so from all accounts happy to see him feature

Neeskens also started as RB in the 70/71 season I think he played a lot of games in defence. As for Bonhof I've seen him a bit like O'Sheasy of course more individual quality and he is listed as CB/LB/RB/DM with his most prominent position of course in midfield.

Nice input, cheers. It does seem that Edgar boxed himself into a corner there indeed, as he has great players in certain positions and fillers in others which IMO makes the balance a bit off. Can imagine Effenberg being sent off during the game for murdering a teammate.

 Effenberg is actually another one that I don't entirely like in this set up. I watched a few of his matches when I picked him quite recently and wasn't bowled over with his work rate and inconsistent application. With so much playmaking quality around him in midfield I think a runner with a great engine in the mould of *drum roll* Bonhof would balance out that unit better.

Go away Pat. Nobody likes you here.
On the contrary I think you are the minority in that sense :D

Untrue. I bet Enigma appreciates me being around!
So true. I was going to touch that subject (Effenberg) later on but glad you did. I rate him high but he’s no or in his element here on the side of a diamond where he’s expected to put a lot of huff and puff.

He’d also have to cover for Nakamoto who is the main width provider on the left and in the same time have to mind Real Madrid’s legend - Amaro.

Yeah, Effenberg is not a great fit at LCM. I did think EAP might have gone with a magic square with Effenberg as RAM. He could stay more central as Eusebio would drift wide right quite a bit.

Yeah RAM might be better as otherwise if he’s deep alongside Matic it would be one very slow base of the midfield.

I want you all talking about:

Maradona vs 33yo Cerezo
Eusebio vs Walker

Amari and Riva are great matchups for Enigma, I can't dispute that....but if you are looking at mismatches that will make the biggest difference, it has to be in my favour.

Walker was a pure stopper. He was a man marker and a pure defensive player. Same as Thuram. Getting the ball out of defense will be a big ask.

And way too much rides on shoulders of Cerezo to make the team tick. He's the creative pivot and important to make that midfield tick, sole responsibility to get ball out of defense....and defend against Maradona. Just too much for a 33yo player.

Cerezo played at a very high level in his 30s much like Maldini in your team, so that’s a non issue.

In terms of getting the ball out of defence I’d be more worried of Maldini’s partner who barely made the cut in the Bundesliga and the Japanese full back who played three seasons as regular in one of the most average Inter sides that conceded 150 goals just in the league in those three seasons.

it’s just too too heavy team that lacks the synergy between the lines and very questionable defence.
