Xabi Alonso | Chelsea manager

Depressing. We get Carrick. They get Alonso.

I would be excited as a Chelsea fan right now.

Once again, Mates FC and and jobs for the boys FC and Sir Alex FC leave us with an uninspired choice while the other big clubs have exciting managers.

God I hope I am wrong, but this is how I feel.

Btw, I did not want Alonso here. No way. It’s just the contrast between that appointment and ours in the same week that makes me feel depressed.

Somebody give me a good reason why that should not be depressing btw. All ears.
How did the excitement of Ten Hag and Amorim work out for us? There's always a flavour of the month and there will be again even if we end up sacking Carrick next season.

The most important things are that Carrick's quietened down the noise which was incessant for 18 months to 2 years prior to his arrival, and the players seem to enjoy playing for him.

Player recruitment will be far more important this summer than the appointment of Carrick. It doesn't matter who the coach is, you need good players. There's every chance we mess that up but I'm far more invested in that than trying to attract a name manager.

Enciso, a Chelsea signing? Chelsea?

Buonanotte was a loan signing to fill the bench while Palmer was injured. Hardly worth adding to the pile.

Wasted his career anyway. Had no idea he was even at Leeds until I read he was injured in one of the team news articles for a recent game. Wasn't that long ago he was starting for Brighton when they were top 6.

Enciso looked pretty talented a few years back. Had ACL injury. I thought Chelsea wanted to sign him on loan but wouldn't have been able to name him in CL squad so instead he's been parked at Strasbourg for a year.

If not strange move to leave Brighton to go to Strasbourg.

BBC (and Romano) were saying last August the plan is to get him to Chelsea eventually:

When you’ve been burned from picking up the frying pan at Real Madrid, why would you jump into the Chelsea fire?
That Real pan is straight lava, where minimum expectation is to win every single game, lest you're a complete failure. He won't be under that kind of pressure at Chelsea. And he won't have to live up to the momentous task of filling Big Carlo's boots and handle the Valverdes and the Vinis. He'll get a period of grace and he has the man-ager to outshine.

Speaking of man-aging, I think he fancies moulding prospects into ballers and Chelsea has alot of those. If indeed he gets to be a manager and not a coach, maybe it's a sign their owners has aknowledged the error of their ways and won't be as much of a pain in the ass to deal with for him as they were for Maresca.

His name carries weight, he'll be respected by the players and I bet most Chelsea fans are making puddles in their underpants over this. I know I would, i'd drown in that shit after a few years of BlueCo lunacy.

Who wasted his career? Himself? Brighton? He looked decent a couple of years ago but he was sent on loan to Leicester last year and was nothing special. Then he joined us on loan as an emergency back up.

Enciso is just a Blueco multi-club dodgy deal. He will likely never play for Chelsea despite what Brief FC have briefed.

I think thats a bit different, you had a treble winning manager, Carrick hasnt come close to winning a bean as a manager. We had a decent thing with Ole, but say we had a choice between Ole when he got made permanent or Klopp you would take klopp any day of the week.
Well, no two cases are exactly alike. But compare Carricks results to those of Amorim and the conclusion should be that he really tidied up the mess and has been a miracle worker.

Actually, if the numbers I calculated are right:
Amorim picked up 31p in 20g.
Fletcher picked up 1p in 1g.
Carrick picked up 33p in 15g.

*Pep picked up 34p in 15g since Carricks appointment. He is the only one picking up more points than Carrick.

Title bid
Carrick has averaged 2.2p a game = if he was the manager since game 1 United would have had 79.2p! You obviously can't get 0.2 points but the average is exactly the same as Arsenal who leads the table with 79p followed by City at 77p.

When Carrick took over United was in 6th 11p behind Villa. Now United are in 3rd with 3p more than Villa + a game in hand.

---

Btw, Ole got you to the semis in the Europa League and then lost a final in Europa League the following season. 3rd and 2nd in the league. Ole later got sacked. At the moment he was heavily scrutinized but thats hardly a bad resume, it could have been worse.

But I get what you mean regarding Klopp. And I also hold Alonso in the highest of regard so I understand what you are getting at. And this was exactly why the Bayern board forced Heynckes to retire. Because they couldn't pass up on the only chance ever to get Guardiola - even though Heynckes brought the bloody treble!

This does look like a good appointment but I can't help wondering how long (or not) he'll last!

Yeah he wasted this season as he was actually joining Leeds in August when Chelsea came in late. Then joins Leeds mid season but Farke understandably dosen't want to change formation to fit him in given the excellent form Leeds hit so he's not even been making the bench there.

So it will be interesting if Alonso is going to put up with these deals or will he demand this summer they sign 2-3 experienced heads from prem or abroad.

Joining Chelsea is looking like a poison chalice, they're a fecking mess. If he sorts them out he's definitely special.

But you said wasted his career, which is what raised my eye brows. A 6 month loan, its a bit harsh to lay that at Chelsea door. Wasted his season, sure but it was his decision. He wanted a chance to play in the CL to presumably put himself in the shop window for other CL clubs. Didn't work out that way. He was never more than just okay whenever he got a chance.

My thinking on Alonso is, and I hope this is true, is that he demanded assurances that the club will stop meddling and being so overbearing in everything. That they'll back him all the way with incomings and outgoings. I hope he told them he would never join without those assurances and that him agreeing to come here is a sign that things will be different now. Wishful thinking maybe. But it's what I'm telling myself.

Ten Hag and Amorim hadn't proven anything outside of their own home leagues. Alonso isn't in the same bracket as them, and certainly isn't a "flavour of the month." He won the Bundesliga undefeated with a club that is comparable to Tottenham, and he had like the third highest win rate of any Real Madrid manager, sitting one point below 1st place when he was sacked due to that club's unhealthy player culture. That's tiers above Ten Hag and Amorim. They just managed to win domestically with Ajax and Sporting, hardly achievements that shook the foundations of football.

Alonso is obviously a fantastic coach and I'd be surprised if we don't sit here in ten years and look at this the exact same way we do at missing out on Klopp.

Im not advocating for EtH or Amorim, but Ten Hag managed to build an incredible Ajax team and lead them to a UCL semi-final. He was regarded as a fantastic coach who achieved both domestically and in the UCL.

Alonso might have won the most games at RM, but being the manager of a club of this stature is more than just winning games. You need to win the dressing room and the boardroom. He wasn’t able to handle the player culture as you say, but in a club like Madrid it’s a full part of your job, you can’t just discard it

It's easy to say all that in hindsight. When we hired ten Hag we were told it was an incredible feat reaching the semis of the CL and various other mental gymnastic shite was said to big him up. Alonso has achieved nothing outside of Leverkusen. He's no more guaranteed to succeed at Chelsea than Ten Hag or Amorim was at United.

Exactly what I've been saying. I remember when Klopp first went to pool, we had the same with fans saying hes not all that.
Too many seem to think wanting the best manager possible means you hate carrick or you want the club to fail. Its the opposite, you want the best possible outcome so want the best possible manager. Its not a stretch to say you think that someone who took a midtable side to an unbeaten near record double just missing out on a treble and had a good record at real is better than a manager who hasn't come close to winning a bean and was sacked from his only full time managerial job at a midtable championship side

He had a 70% win rate at Madrid, got fired for falling out with the egos. He's got pedigree as a player and won everything. Plus his Bayer spell.

He's not guaranteed to succeed, mainly because our squad is a huge mess. But he's got a good chance as anyone we can get.

It most likely is, to be honest. Just the other day, I almost found myself missing peterstorey when reading posts from the current Arsenal fans on here who are humourless and dull. At least Pete was entertaining!
Still is, plus he's a gem in real life.

Did we even consider this guy?

I know there's the played for Liverpool thing but it's professional sport. That really shouldn't be a factor.
I suggested him before Amorim and people here claim it's impossible. Nothing is impossible.

What an awful post. All the FC nonsense. Feels like it’s been written by a spoilt child. Maybe it has.

You're just chasing shiny things and looking for things to be downbeat about. Carrick has come and settled the squad down, got them playing and we finally look fairly solid and competitive consistently. Don't get me wrong, I am not entirely sold on him but then again nor am I on Alonso, who also still has it all to prove.

You're exaggerating how impressive he's been so far. That bundesliga was the last time it looked like bayern were domestically vulnerable and, however you want to dress it up, Alonso at Madrid was a failure. You're saying he's 'obviously' a fantastic coach based on how many seasons?

Vulnerable or not, Alonso won the league unbeaten one point off the points record.

Yep, one season. Ranieri had a one off wonder season. I'm saying extrapolating that he's a fantastic coach from one (admittedly great) season and a half season with another huge club after which he was sacked in second(?) is madness

He also finished runner up with Leverkusen after the title. Which is a bit less stellar, but still a very very good season for them. For reference, they finished 6th this year

He got more points than any Bayern team bar Heynckes'. He'd have most likely won the title regardless of what Bayern did.

And before he took over, Leverkusen were 17th in the league.

To be very fair, it was the guys first major job that he only left last summer and he went an undefeated league and cup double with a side who’d never won the league in their history.

Amorim and ETH’s jobs at Ajax and sporting are incomparable in terms of the scale of achievement to what Alonso did at Leverkusen.

He’s also come through exceptional education working under the likes of Benitez, Guardiola, Mourinho and Ancelotti. He also happens to be from the Basque Country , an area noticeable for producing very good managers:

He’s far more likely to succeed at Chelsea than EtH or Amorim were at United based on trajectory and upbringing.

On paper he’s a fantastic appointment for Chelsea who have a squad that probably suits his favoured system. I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t get going there.

Fair. I just don't see it as a body of work that justified saying he's obviously a fantastic coach.

Possibly. Again, I still think it's a bit mad that people are framing him as some sort of nailed on success.

Who do you think would be a better pick for Chelsea? Genuine question.

Nobody is ever a "nailed on success" of course.
No idea and I'm not sure I claimed to have anyone in mind? I took issue with people kicking off that we apparently didn't go for him, as well as people claiming he is 'obviously a fantastic coach', which I don't agree with.

I didn't say you had but do you think there was a better option out there for Chelsea?

You don't think Alonso is a fantastic coach so I was curious as to who you thought was (and that Chelsea should have gone for instead).
Are you asking me who I think is a fantastic coach, or who I think Chelsea could have realistically got that's better? Because the two are different questions.
