DWIGHT YORKE is up for sale and will make a shock move to either Fulham or Middlesbrough.
The two Premiership clubs were battling it out for the Manchester United striker's signature last night.
Yorke, 30, has been told he can leave Old Trafford now United are close to landing West Ham's Paolo Di Canio as a replacement.
A fee of close to £7million has already been discussed between Boro and United. But yesterday afternoon Fulham made contact and matched the fee.
Now Jean Tigana is trying to persuade the Londoners' owner Mohamed Fayed to make Yorke their top-paid player.
Yorke, currently on £25,000 a week, is after a final pay packet of around double that.
Spurs have also made an enquiry. But Boro and Fulham are much further down the line to a deal.
Boro boss Steve McClaren knows Yorke well from his time as Alex Ferguson's United No2.
The player also has friends at the Riverside from his Aston Villa days — defenders Gareth Southgate and Ugo Ehiogu and coach Steve Harrison.
A transfer will mark the end of an unhappy spell for Yorke. Last season he fell foul of Ferguson numerous times over his international commitments with Trinidad and Tobago.
This season he has been unable to hold down a first-team place.
His exit will follow that of his old striking partner Andy Cole to Blackburn.
The duo notched up 53 goals between them as United won the treble in 1998-99.
Yorke has never wanted to leave United. But, like Cole, he is desperate for regular first-team football — and he now knows that to get it he must move on.
