He played well 2nd half. 92% pass accuracy, 6/7 ground duels won (86%) is outstanding
2 unsafe touches, dispossessed 0 times. Its not ideal but not that bad.
He was more like a 7/10
Classic redcafe 2 games in without much preseason to train with the team. He is being labelled slow, not good enough, old and whatnot
Deserved a win - thought he had a very good and tidy game. His long passing could be better though.
Thought it was easily his best game for us so far. Was clearly not match fit on day one.
Supreme technician with the ball at his feet, that much is obvious. Some of his interplay with Mainoo today was great, both very comfortable on the ball. I think he will be starting some games as our attacking midfielder as the season progresses.
The way he takes the ball is a very underrated skill of his. Makes it look easy, lets it roll across his body on to his weaker foot which gives him that space to work with. He'll be a very good player for us.
Would like to see how a midfield 3 with him, Mainoo and Baleba would work but I guess that will never happen.

For the Type of player he is and his lack of defensive ability he atleast needs to be a complete tempo setter and a clean passer.
His passing so far has been more about quantity and quality. The passes are not quite accurate, doesn't have the right speed- he just kinds of gets it done.
I'm not surprised that's ever since he came in to our first 11 we seem we lack defensive and even offensive exposure. He looses the ball quite alot and struggles to get out of tight spaces.
It's more bad management by Carrick than Tielemans -
But Tielemans & Mainoo can't be in the same team & if I had to pick one then it would be Mainoo. For all the experience Tielemans must have, we are probably try to build the midfield around him & considering 2 out of 3 midfielders are the same as last season, Tielemans is an obvious step below Casemiro. It's not like Tielemans passing has been Jaw dropping either to make up for the difference.
Tielemans should only play with Baleba due to his lack of physicality and mobility. Our strongest defensive mid vs our weakest midfielder.
Mainoo should be playing matches with Santos who can sit back and provide passes to Mainoo from Deep to progress the ball. 2 of our medium strength midfielders together.
I want to see him dropped but I know its not going to happen until its a cup game.
You compare the composure that Mainoo gives to the team in comparison to Tielemans who is supposed to be this amazing passer - I just haven't seen it yet.

Agreed. It’s not ideal to have both youngsters in midfield, but it is what it is. Until Baleba is fit, and hope that he’s back in form, Tielemans doesn’t really have a good partner to play with.
When Baleba is gonna be fit and back in-form? Only god knows.

Yup, he did. I think he's found his rythm.
I don't think he's the perfect partner for Mainoo, but when he got the ball he was good, and off the ball, he did well in his own duels.
I also realize why he's starting with Mainoo right now. I think Carrick sees Mainoo as a 6 due to his lack of passing range. So pairing him with Tielmens, who does have that range, is the reason Tielmens, and not Santos, has been chosen with Mainoo. I think we have 4 really good midfielders. We just need to find the right balance ahead of them, and find a useful group behind them. As it stands, without Baleba, our midfield doesn't have the defensive recovery without Baleba to cover for our defensive issues.
So far, I feel he needs to do more.
I like that he was a prodigy kid back then and how he looks like a friendly version of Nas. But he has to do a lot more.. all the things he's done so far, Tom Cleverly could have done it save from imitating Bruno's penalty down to the milliseconds.

So far it's not obvious what he's brought, i'm sure with time he'll put his stamp on things though.
He's good on the ball but give me a midfielder who can stop opponent from playing someone who forces opponent to think long and hard about what route they'll towards our goal and yet wouldn't be able to come up with any hopefully Baleba brings that.
He's done an absolutely spot-on Tom Cleverley impression with us so far.

He seems to play the ball forward much more than the meme was with Cleverley, though maybe one can do statistical comparison when there is a bigger sample. Several times he and Mainoo combined to free up Cunha or Fernandez against Everton only for them to bungle up the attack. I agree though that he can contribute more to attack if he is playing as a relatively advanced midfielder with less defensive duties.
I thought he was a good signing. 2 of 3 games so far, and the first half for the other one he's been disappointing. I'd give Santos the next game
That's exactly what I was thinking during the game. His technique looks good, he makes all the obvious and easy passess to keep the ball rolling, but this all seems very "basic". Cleverley used to have 95% passing accuracy because of how he played in a similar way to this Youri performance. Tielemans tried a few more difficult passes and the result was 50/50.
The whole midfielding (attacking, defending, progressing the ball, recoveries etc) seems to be going through Mainoo.
Cleverley didnt have his passing range.
He's the only one of our summer signings I'm not worried about. Have watched him for years, we know what his game is.

Don't really agree with the criticism. He knows where he's moving the ball next before it arrives and that helps us break lines quickly. Most of his passes are spot on too, although he has under hit a few longer ones. I wonder how many of those complaining about him recycling the ball a lot are also the ones crying when Bruno tries riskier passes? Seems you can't win with some fans.

Shaw wasn't bad yesterday either and made on mistake the game before, but our fans have targeted left back as our core issue, so it is.
Watching the game and other teams, its clearly a defensive centre issue. They can't handle attacks on the half space and do not cover well for the rest of the team. Both Martinez and Maguire are a step slower ( with Martinez you hope its just fitness) and are struggling to win individual duels.
Tielmens nor Mainoo are going to cover that ( Baleba might and Santos probably could, but we would lose other things). That's our issue. If we don't win every midfield duel or don't avoid being beaten on the flank, we'll likely hope for Lammens to do his magic, a full back/midfield recovery run or a shot off target. Martinez in particular is a bigger liability off the ball than he has ever been. Santos can do his job, but Carrick prefers Mainoo playing as a no.6, and Santos doesn't have the ball driving ability of a no.8.
I actually think he has been ok. Obviously he can do better but i'm not worried about him.
He's been okay but I expected a bit more to be honest. For this club to have a successful season we need more than breaking the lines into a crowded Bruno/Cunha or our wide forwards
We need all our midfielders to be showing creativity and/or quick exchanges of passes that break the opponents structure. I felt there was a lot of runs that weren't picked out and we still do the obvious predictable pass in.

He’s our new Eriksen. Nice on the ball, will have some great games but also a snail and not really ideal for first choice.
He has been ok, the only worry is he seems like someone they will target to close down and he's been caught on the ball a couple of times. As a team we need to give him some quicker options and he will have to adapt to that. Again, getting balance in the team will help, having someone like Baleba next to him should mitigate some of the risk.
Not a good example. Eriksen was not a natural CM and played the position like someone who was still getting to grips with it.
We signed Eriksen well past his peak for obvious reasons and we signed him off a half season mini resurgence at Brentford. Tielemans is coming off his best stretch of seasons as a pro.
He was the main midfielder for a club that finished 4th in the PL and won the Europa League last season and 6th (level on points with 5th) and made the QF of the CL losing to PSG by 1 goal on aggregate the year before. He also happens to be the Belgian NT captain. Let's not pretend that we are better than having Tielemans as a first choice.

Cleverley was good for about 6 games at the start of 11/12, after that he was bang average then he became downright pointless once Fergie left.
You putting Cleverley in a list with those players is laughable. Those were good/great players that we could use today, Cleverley would be behind Mount in the rotation for CMs.
Tell me you never saw Cleverley play without telling me you never saw Cleverley play... Differences of opinions and all that but sometimes it's just too much.

We all know he's got the pedigree but he needs to play in a proper 3 man midfield like he did at Villa. A midfield of him, Mainoo and Baleba would have a mix of everything, I'd love to see it.
A 2 man midfield with just him and Mainoo, with Bruno going on renegade one-man pressing raids, is not going to be the best use of his strengths.

I assumed he was brought in as cover for our midfield, and not a starter. I hope, and pray, that as Carlos Baleba gets up to fitness we will see less and less of him.
If Baleba is anywhere close to the levels he's capable of, I won't sweat a midfield two of him and Kobbie, with Bruno a free role behind a lead the line striker like Sesko.
