How do we feel this midfield ranks in comparison to the Spurs Tonali and Fernandez £185m combination?

At the moment, United have spent £100m less so best to see what/if they get another name in before making a comparison.

Santos + Tielemans for the price of Fernandes should be an interesting comparison over the season though.

If I was a Spurs fan, in considering how poor their squad is I'd be much more keen on that £185m being used to buy more than 2 players.

Tielemans>Tonali>Fernandes>Santos as per today, with Santos=Fernandes>Tonali>Tielemans as potential for the next five years.

I would agree with this post, esp. on current rankings.

As a player with a lot of strengths, who was essential for a Villa side that have done consistently well , I don't understand why so many keep thinking Tonali & Fernandes > Tielemans.

On paper it's quite a bit worse. Tielemans might well be getting to injured /falling off part of his carear but if it works out fitness wise we will be fine next season. The other thing is we have better players than them all around the pitch so while their engine room is premium it's true a well drilled team of hardworking players is going hold their own against expensive names a lot of the time.

The main thing is we are going to have to go back into market again either next year or the season after whereas Spurs all going to plan should be good for the next 3/4 years at least in those 2 positions and can build around it

For what it's worth I don't think either player was worth breaking a 200kpw wage structure for though. Maybe for Tonali given his experience and it's probably his last big move but certainly not for Fernandes at this point in time.

There’s no indication Tielemans wouldn’t have chosen City if it had actually come down to us or them. Most players say this sort of thing, it doesn’t really mean much.

Pretty happy with this signing. Don't know if there will be a third midfield signing or not now but this is much beter than if we ended up with Ederson.

I think this is interesting but Tielemans has an incredibly injury record. A bad season is 35 games.

What I will say is that we have tried to build depth whereas they’ve tried to build a first 11 class midfield. The reality is though that even with a quality midfield they don’t have an attack.

They are better road runners but I rate Tielemans as by far the best pure CM and Santos is a better passer as well than either.

I really don't rate Tonali though at that price at all.

I don't think anybody who watched Casemiro thought he was a true #6. He didn't sit deep and dictate etc I think they can play together in specific setups but ideally you would want someone more physicality next to either of them with Santos being the partner and also the reason why I think we are chasing for someone like Kone to rotate with Santos

I think in most games we'll default to a dual 8 and try to look after the ball a lot better than we have done since... well... since Carrick.

He is obviously a #6. Villa played two. Similar to Man Utd with Scholes/Carrick.

What's a "true 6"? Someone who sits back and mops up defensively? The game has evolved a lot recently. Especially for the big teams, wherein we have a lions share of possession and need more penetrative options. Vitinha plays as the 6 for PSG.

I agree and also we've played star studded financially bloated teams off the park with the likes of Ando T Clev Gibson O Shea and Neville in the middle of the park. So nice things on paper only take you so far. If you looked at the value of England vs Argentina last night I'd be certain the English players are younger and worth a lot more on the open market but the market price or your wages doesn't win you games once the tackles start flying. It's about having balance and if YT stays fit he's an excellent addition and he should in theory give us time to find and develop another hungry up and comer

Mainoo can play as a #6 with Tielemans also sitting to help him. Tielemans has improved his ball winning in recent seasons

If we decide we want more of a pure #6 to just defend, against a better footballing team then we have Santos as an option

Tielemans is a better overall player than Mainoo. There's enough games for both of them though.

I'd imagine it's santos going to be rotating with Mainoo next season
Mount with Tielemans which is grand really if Mount stays fit. If he doesn't there's games galore for those 3

I imagine it'll be all of them rotated. The best way to keep Tielemans free of his injuries this past season.

I dont see Mount being in the conversation. Think we'll more likely see Tyler Fletcher while Ugarte is injured as our last spot for getting games. Mount will continue getting some mins as an AM and Bruno might go back to CM at times.

Depends on teams we play against.
Some teams we play 2CMs , 3 forwards , and Bruno.
With some we pack the midfield with 3 Midfielders.
I would like 1 more mega signing, a Bruno G would be amazing

I think against easier opposition Mount if he's fit will be played in central midfield. Bringing Bruno back the way is a waste of his biggest threat. We don't really need Bruno to get the ball forward from deep anymore, keep him as close to the goal as possible and profit! Anyway let's see how it pans out. I can't see Mount staying fit but if he does I really wouldn't be surprised to see him play quite a lot in CM. Nobody can tell right now, everyone is guessing, let's see how it goes and come back to it in a few months.

Exactly, we really need to stop with this "player must love United more than their own kids" nonsense.

All players say it is a dream to play at X club and there is no problem with a player weighing up decisions between your club and another.

I am sure Salah didn't have dreams of Liverpool and may have chosen another club over them in a battle, but that didn't stop him becoming one of their greatest ever players.

Roy Keane agreed to go to Blackburn, so he wasn't just sitting around saying he only has eyes for United. It's daft and not in line with reality.

My concern is Mainoo and Tielemans is a slow combo and Santos isn't much quicker. It feels like that final midfield signing is going to have to play a lot of games. If not then we're going to need to see quite drastic tactical shifts, either a considerably higher line or inverted full backs that cover.
