It should be clear by now that it has nothing to do with the manager. This group of players are a mixture of not good enough, or too haphazardly assembled to play together consistently. That's on the club. We've had two of the most successful managers in the game fall on their faces yet still we think its the manager that's the problem. I have never been sure if Ole was up to the task but it will be a long time before I want him gone.
Still, he has made some serious mistakes. A few off the top of my head:
- Ashley Young. Does Ole really think he is good enough? Or is he too scared of his influence in the dressing room if he drops him?
- Our best midfields all season have been Herrera+Matic or Fred+McTominay. So why do we insist on playing combinations we know don't work?
- Our subs. Seems like we draw them out of the hat.
There are more, but the worst is the lack of coaching. It's well known that it takes a few months for a new manager's influence to show itself on the football style. The first couple of months of Ole's reign was Mourinho's coaching, played with a confidence and freedom he hadn't allowed. By now we are seeing Ole's coaching, and it makes me wonder if we actually have any? Every game we look like we're playing together for the first time.
