Wherever did you ever get that idea from?

As other posters have pointed out, this is how a market works. The more people demand something, the greater the asking price. Just look at the housing market as an example - the fundamentals are the same. Converservly, the higher the asking price the lower the demand.

Nobody knows what the economic outlook will be in 12 months, hence why I said it is a risk. However they still get to keep the player for another 12 months, while potentially still achieving a good price.

As we all know, players wishes have little to do with this. Di Maria's time at United is a perfect example - he never wanted to leave Madrid and come here yet he did.
That's not how football transfers work. Using the fecking housing market as an example just underlines lack of insight

Di Maria was desperate to leave Real Madrid and he didn't have any other viable choices.

I'd love Dortmund to say "Sancho stays" today, just for the meltdown on here.
Fairly sure that's exactly whats gonna happen.

We had a deadline, we're passed it. He's our player and preparing for the upcoming season etc etc etc

We'll still sign him. If we weren't going to, then we'd have had the brief that it's off.

You’re again taking everything in a very literal sense. Firstly, Sancho doesn’t have to stay there until the last day of the transfer window, just long enough for both clubs wanting that to happen. Secondly, when I said the deal isn’t done yet, I meant it’s not announced yet. BVB doesn’t have to sign off on anything even if they do agree to an offer, until they haven’t secured a replacement for him. That’s totally in their right.
so when someone says that maybe everything is agreed, and then comes up with an obscure theory that's completely unlikely, and you totally agree with it, it shouldn't be taken literally?

Yep, expect all that to happen but the bedwetting and meltdown in here will be huge

If Utd genuinely believe Zorc is going to say it’s now over then fully expect a “Utd end interest in Sancho” briefing inside the next hour

I didn’t miss your point, my point is you can assess what you read on a case by case basis. Your original point doesn’t really have much merit, it suggests “journalists” are one homogenous group, but your blanket statement is misplaced, as people can simply use their own judgment to evaluate info from journalists. You seem to want people to accept that all information from journalists is worth the same as a Reddit ITK.

Gonna leave it there btw as I don’t want to take thread off topic, feel free to @ me in the Reddit #2 thread if you want to discuss more, happy to do so!
Yeah I can see how that's been misinterpreted by my post sorry, I was initially responding to a suggestion that today's presser will confirm that no contact has been made whatsoever, to which I posted to say well at least that would break some of this protection that Fabrizio seems to get, but then it won't because he's protected by ambiguity.

How can you assess what you read when it's quite widely regarded that everything you read from transfer footie journo's is non-committal hearsay. That's my point. There is no benchmark that we hold them to and there is no come back when they get it wrong. And so the cycle continues.

Agree let's leave it there.

If we do end up pulling out, Dortmund stand to lose the most. They'll not get the same amount ofd any other team and next window the fee will be much less.

I'm not sour mate, I've been lurking here before becoming a full member for probably 15 years, I watch people lap up these 'reliable' journo's crap every transfer window. Myself included to some extent.

When you take a step back, ignore the blue tick on their twitter account, it quite literally the same as believing an ITK on Reddit (or my neighbour example  )
You've been lurking for 15 years, so you should know the difference between credible journalists, shitty journalists and your neighbour.

Journalists don't get it right 100% of the time, but the track record of the one I've named speaks for himself. When he gives news, chances are it's accurate. Your lazy comparison to your neighbor and unwillingness to understand there are different tiers of credibility shows you're clutching at straws on this.

Zorcs press briefing today is completely ordinary. It is a standard press conference to kick off the pre-season tour. It is not being convened specially to share something specific. Yes, Sancho will be likely mentioned, but it isn't anything to worry about in terms of the deal. I imagine if the deal was off there would not be a press conference, but just a briefing to journos to then print

The whole thing is only being picked up because of the ongoing saga and spun as an episode of the Sancho transfer, when it is not.

It's always that easy to pull out though. Sometimes the other party has to say "right, that's it, we're done here" before you officially withdraw.

We have missed out on him. Dortmund wanted 120m and we couldn’t get the Glazers to agree. Dortmund will probably get the same next year as what we were offering, even with one year left. Backup plans are Douglas Costa / Zaha / Coman.

Looks like posters are angry that deal is not done and started to blame journalists now.

"We never wanted him anyway."

"Isn't as good as Lingard."

"Gives the ball away too easily."

(See Maguire briefing from Woodward, summer 2018 and Fernandes briefing, summer 2019).

Kebab pizza, "kebab roll", "kebab in bread"... don't know if there's a direct translation for those... if you ever visit Sweden, you must try any of those (preferably all of them). Imagine the joy you'd feel if Sancho signed for us... you'd feel the same when eating any of those!
On topic now: Get it done Ed ffs!

Thankfully we've got Greenwood emerging so i'm not crapping myself as much as I did with Bruno, but it'll be extremely frustrating if we can't get the deal over the line.

I just can't see Dortmund going back on their word now they've been so public about the 120m figure.

You'd hope they can somehow meet us in the middle, if all this is really over £10m more you have to wonder is it worth the risk.

On the contrary, your belief in a structured hierarchy of reliable journalists shows your the one clutching at straws. See Fabrizio's old boss as a prime example, we all lauded him as a god for years and he's gotten major things wrong since. Fabrizio his understudy, he's learned from the best on how to seem in the know.

As I've said to another poster, lets just leave it there. You obviously believe they know far more than I think they do.

United would have briefed it was off last night if that was the case. Theyd have done something well before the Dortmund presser. This is Ed were on about, if it was off, he'd have briefed about it and spun it in a way to make United look good.

There is a reasonable chance that the entire next season will be played behind closed doors meaning the clubs turnover takes a hammering. Paying 120m for a 20 year old from a different league in that context is crazy in my view. Yes he might be best player in world in next few years but there is also a chance that he might end up being sh1t.

I'll be over the moon if we sign him for a fee that reflects the new economic reality that the entire world is now operating under. We are going to look like the worlds most stupidly run club yet again if we pay what Dortmund are currently asking which does not take account of the impact of covid 19.

Dortmund can get stuffed if a 1000% profit on a player they have had for only 3 years isn't enough for them.

See this is what I do fear. Having a potentially elite level Striker playing RW.

Would be United all over to have wingers playing the striker role and feckin strikers playing the wingers role.

Yes we’re going straight to Douglas Costa who has scored 10 goals in 3 years after we ‘stumbled’ on a deal for Sancho

There's already a brief that the clubs are still in negotiation. I don't think Zorc will say anything significant.

Woody knows time is on our side we’ve zero reason to panic.
New season starts in September. If we want to improve on last season, we need 2/3 players in, given 1 player takes 6 weeks to sign, no we do not have time.

If Sancho is the only player you want, then sure plenty of time.

And if Greenwood/Martial get injured, we gonna go back to Dan fecking James and Lingard.

I don’t think it’ll be that bad, reckon we’ll get someone else in as a stopgap if the Sancho deal falls through.

Bidding war is a myth when it comes to transfer fee, you don't see one club bidding 40 million, club 2 - 45 million then club 3 comes up with 50 million. Selling club sets the asking price and its up to buying clubs to match it.

Bidding war happens for player contract. When more clubs are interested, players get awesome contract as club gives better contract to convince player.
Heck, even sometimes you get clubs selling to the club offering a lower transfer fee because the player would only accept to go to one of the clubs.
