Thinking about a recent thread where the question popped up whether or not Ronaldo can be considered a united legend. My answer is a definate no.

Noticed the Caf was quite split on the subject. So thought it would be interesting to ask the question which players you would class as united legends.

This would be my list (post Munich) off the top of my head:

Charlton
Law
Best
Foulkes
Gregg
Stiles
Buchan
Robson
Keane
Cantona
Schmeichel
Evra
Scholes
Giggs
Beckham
Rooney

Ronaldo arguably the best player we’ve seen in decades and actually showed this level of quality for our club is most definitely a United legend. He played for us for 7 years you jokers.

Hmmm, for me the term legends refers to those players you tell tales about to upcoming generations or reminisce about in discussions of old times with your mates. The ones who make you start a sentence with, "but do you remember when X..." etc.

So for me, that's Best, Giggs, Ronaldo and to show I don't discriminate against players who aren't wingers, I'll throw in Buchan, Schmeichel and Irwin as well.

Lots of other great players of course, because I've been lucky enough to be a United fan. Lots of players, who've played more games or have arguably done as much or more for us. But legends? That is, the ones I talk about in awe, rather than the ones I simply respect or admire as great talents or key figures in our teams? There are lots of great players - but those half dozen I've mentioned come at the top of my list.

Next you will be claiming he won 2 CL and 4 PL titles with us!

The problem with Ronaldo is, that everybody will remember him as a Real Madrid legend, he might've got a balon d'or and CL trophy here, but his RM achievments are undeniably bigger

Looking for the answers...
Ronaldo isn't a United legend ? Hahaha
People seriously underestimate his legacy because he left and gave his prime to Madrid. That hurt me too.

Ronaldo was instrumental to one of the most successful spells the club had. Achieved all there was to at United and did things no player had ever done or will likely do again.

He should be seen as a legend of the club and those that think otherwise are just bitter.

There is alot more .
I know I’m joking. Going with the more traditional definition of legend as a mythical character. Edwards has an incredibly compelling mystery about him given his fate.

Ronaldo’s early days at United also do, given the fact he became one of the best ever to play the game mostly playing for another club, we look back at the player we remember in those early days and there’s such a mythic status about him.

Being successful, instrumental, the best etc is irrelevant as far as being a legend is concerned. To be a legend you need all of that plus loyalty and a sense of belonging to the club. Ronaldo lacked the latter and therefore is one of the greats to play for man utd but not a legend.

T1: Charlton, Giggs, Scholes, Law, Best, Robson, Cantona, Gregg, Keane, Edwards
T2: Foulkes, Rio, Irwin, Evra, Ole, Rooney, Beckham, Bruce, Schmeichel, G. Neville, Buchan
T3: Cristiano, Vidić, van der Sar, Hughes, Stiles, De Gea (yes), Ruud etc.

The lines between the tiers (especially T2 & T3) are pretty thin.

This is fine mate. But I would promote Ole to tier 1 without a question. To win a Champions league that way was extraordinary. This is a trophy that the scousers use as a stick to beat us with.

And then to be brave and take over the United role, cleaning up the mess left by Jose , LVG and Moyes and in the process developing Greenwood into this special player, Ole is Tier 1 for me.

That’s actually very accurate as far as I am concerned. Can’t argue with it.

I look at how Rashford plays and so many others at our club like these deadly inverted forwards rather than the traditional winger & it does feel to me that Ronaldo left an imprint at the club (not obviously all due to him).

SAF called him the best most gifted player he has worked with. Whilst we always do value the status of Giggs and scholes - there legacy got helped by Ronaldo shorter/quicker achievements as much as vice versa.

He made me enjoy football; I'm sure he made youngsters enjoy it and support United during his time here.

Pirlo was a legend at milan & Juventus. Cruyff at Ajax and Barcelona. You can play at other clubs and be legends.

I'm hoping that C Ronaldo becomes a short but quick legend at Juventus as well because that's what makes him such a player.

I'd have Pallister in there and Whiteside as well probably T2 and T3 respectively otherwise pretty solid list.

Ronaldo - United’s best ever player.
Beckham - most famous player.
Rooney - top scorer.
Giggs - most appearances.

These 4 would be under “legend” for me. And then others such as Cantona and Schmeichel are iconic and have to be considered legends. I’d consider Keane as well - absolute machine in the 90s team, which was the best in England and probably Europe.

That’s probably it for the last 40 years. Nothing before Schmeichel (Robson would be closest, but didn’t win enough) and nothing from the last few years (unless you include the dregs of Giggs and Rooney).

It's like having the hottest chick around, she married someone else and loved him...dumping us along the way, and we still hang her picture on the wall.

Yeah but i used to bang her before she got famous and left me for a richer dude, loved him even when he doesnt treat her very well.

It's a one sided love, he moved on and never even once looked back. I doubt he really loved us anyway, he respect the old man that taught him the way but i dont think he loves the club

Pretty much this. One of the best in our history, help us won titles, we helped him to become what he is and that is it.

Ronaldo is not. Tevez is not. All others are.
Tevez definitely isn't. Did he even have a good year or was he just a part of a great team? Ronaldo definitely is though. He spent 7 years at the club, helped us win everything we could possibly win, won a Ballon d'Or, and left the club on good terms. Not sure what else he would have to do to be considered a legend...

United had many legends but 1 hero ie Harry Gregg. He should be considered at the peak of all our legends bar maybe Sir Alex and Sir Matt. Evra gained alot of respect lately. He was a legend prior to what he said about Woodward but he's more a legend now in my books. He had placed Manchester United ahead of the financial benefits he might have enjoyed by sucking up to these vampires.
