Without having looked into it at all, could there be an argument that Trump is paying a small amount of income tax because he was not actually paid a salary in that period? If his earnings come from owning companies and other assets, shouldn't he be paying capital gains tax and not income tax on that?

Again, I know nothing about the US tax system or Trump's activities in that period. Just a thought.
No, it has nothing to do with his donating his salary. He paid $0 in income tax for 10 of the last 15 years before he became president. Capital gains would be part of income tax.

At the same time, if you’re charging all your living expenses to your companies then why would you need a salary?

The only way people stopped following in cultesque Charles Manson was when he eventually got sent to Prison but even then become some sort of Messiah and that's probably going to happen to Trump, he'll fall for the sake of the GOP eventually but more than likely be the catalyst for a civil war.

Trump's tax returns won't do much with his supporters, they will vote for him no matter what, it will turn the tide from independent voters who are normal tax paying citizens and if you wanna piss off an American, then taxes are one way to go.
Agree, this isn't the coup we are all hoping for. But it will be nice to tell all trumpites that his riches are as fake as his tan.

Aside from any political ramifications it's just satisfying to see that the dumb feck wasn't ever what he claims to be and his family won't inherit what he suggests they will. I just hope he isn't the 100% psychopath that we all think he is, so that he still has some feelings inside of him, that can now be destroyed.

Pretty sure Trump cares deeply about the perception people have of him. Probably the only thing he does care about.

The best thing about these releases isn't that it's going to persuade anybody. Anyone voting for Trump will just argle-bargle themselves into whatever fantastical justification protects their precious feels. The best thing about them is it upsets Trump personally, keeps him on the back foot and prevents the needle swinging for another week or so. Rinse repeat until the election and Trump loses the vote (but maybe still gets in via the final demolition of US democratic pretensions).

I think, and hope, you're right. However given his general awkwardness I don't discount the possibility that he doesn't feel anything about things that fall outside of his immediate attention.

Democrats should lay out hats around trump tower and throw in pennies just in case though :D

that may explain his years as president, but if i`m not wrong, he has been paying nothing since way before that

Trumps only gonna say something about corrupt hunter or peado Joe every question but im not sure its a great strategy to overuse it

If you get into a pissing contest with trump you end up with 2 old blokes covered in piss... one mortified that he has reverted to the level of a toddler... the other with a huge grin (and probably an erection) wishing it was Russian hooker piss
If he actually insinuates that Joe Biden is a paedophile the debate should be ended immediately. Or the moderator mentions the court filing and what it alleges happened in trumps actual child rape accusation.

Tax avoidance is just as bad as tax evasion. Ethically they’re the same thing, you’re using whatever means you can to avoid paying your dues to society. The only difference is one of them is legal. Just because something is legal doesn’t mean it’s correct.
Minimizing your tax exposure is just basic instinct. It is just that we don't have that luxury since most of us are on pay as you earn. The government has the responsibility to close tax loopholes and enforce it. I don't think they are the same.

One might be illegal but they're both pretty immoral in my opinion. They're taking advantage of a dodgy system that most people aren't able to benefit from when they already have so much money

For me the debates are nothing but a potential negative for Biden - the best he can hope for is perception not to change.

Trump is losing, so he needs the debates to move the narrative, so expect fireworks , moreso with the tax stuff today.

The only comfort is that there really aren't many people still without a firm opinion.

Interesting, I don't even see the Trump tax story on Fox today. Pravda indeed.

What do you all think the chances are of Trump insulting Biden's dead son in the debate?
Very high, I’m sure he’ll try something to make Biden lose his cool. Surely they will have prepped him for anything like that.

Funny that the first story on CNN mobile is titled ‘Trump’s image is revealed to be a sham!’. On FOX it’s the 10th story and is titled ‘Trump calls New York Times report that he avoid paying taxes 'totally made up'’.

I just finished ‘The Comey Rule.’ Pretty good overall, quality actors across the board, definitely worth the time investment. They certainly spared no expense at depicting Rosenstein as quite the cnut.

cat help but feel its a bit of a nothing story... this was pretty well known last time
Yeah we knew he often didn't pay any tax but he sold it as him being smart (even though it's his accountants who are the smart ones); however, the feeling I'm getting from this new revelation is that he didn't pay any tax because he's an economic black hole with no business sense who's been losing money for more than a decade, ergo he's a loser.

How bad is this for Trump then? I only really go on the Guardian so live in a bit of a news bubble.

They've obviously been making a big deal of it, but suspect it's just one of those things that won't stick to him and will be forgotten about in a week?
