Haven't enjoyed a game like that for ages. Come backs are just so much fun to watch. I hope it puts a bit more character in the team. Well done to Cavani, a proper number 9. Fred my man of the match. Yes he stuffed up at times but the work rate and never say die attitude is what I like. Also DVB and Brunno can play together. They just proved it .GO UNITED!

I complained - openly but I don't think signing Cavani was a mistake. I think perhaps we could have got it done quicker but mentally it looked like we were reacting after missing out on Sancho and then people disappointed will moan about the players we signed. I think we should be more decisive and showed more hunger but maybe we signed him as quickly as we could. I don't know but the club came out looking poor and I think that reflected in our opening to the season. He's looking very sharp right now and I think he can do a job for a number of years with that hunger. We just need to plug the gaps and we'll climb that table.
It is what happens when you invest so much of our transfer busines on world class player. It takes time to negotiate a proper fee and potential other transfer business would be hindered depending on the fee agreed. Our interest was focused on sancho, and considered that neither Dortmund or United would budge on our evaluation, we decided to move on, and used some of the fee for sancho on those deadline day signing. The interest in sancho hindered that move for cavani being done earlier, as most fans should realize, we don’t have an unlimited budget to spend each summer

Deserved win really. We are still awful at defending set pieces but apart from that we were the better team throughout. Nice comeback. Bruno is a god, Cavani was a predator today, this is the sort of performance we signed him for.

We had more of a cutting edge today. Didn't think we deserved to be under by 2 goals. Fred's best game in a utd shirt. First time I've seen him play with so much intent. He played a key role for us today. I take back the stick I've given him before. For the time being anyway;)
Yeah he was great. Silly foul which led to the second goal for them and only the occasional mis-placed pass but otherwise brilliant. All over the pitch, winning the ball, pressing well and had some great incisive passes going forward.

I can see his point. We had chances to put that game to bed in the first half and found ourselves 2-0 down. We weren’t playing badly by any means
Agree. Plus as the manager, you have to at least show some positivity and encouragement for the players. They won't be on your side if you slag them off publicly.... it's just how it is.

Not much beats the euphoria of winning a game in that manner. Icing on the cake Cavani being the catalyst. Enjoy your Sunday everyone!

Started the game well. Got kicked out of the game and faded towards the end of the first half. Very unlucky not to score any goals at all. Even more unlucky to be behind by 2 goals.

Second half was better and controlled the game again in large parts. Should have scored more and scored earlier as well. El Matador showing how it's done.

How do pundits think Soton had a good game

I thought they played well. They had a really good spell in the first half and were good in possession but they definitely faded later on in the second half.

Ward Prowse always seems to have the game of his life against us...

Deserved win I think in the end though!

Other than those set pieces Southampton weren't up to much offensively. We were the better team thoughout, could have been a much more comfortable game if we'd taken our early chances

Great resilience and mental strength today. Ole deserves great credit for hooking Greenwood for Cavani at half-time, saved the result.

Haven't been screaming and jumping around like today. Man..., this team will be the end of me.

Cavani, fecking hell.

Everyone else fought like lions out there. Sorry to doubt you, Ole.

Wow what a result. 2 nil down and you're thinking ah here we go again. We didn't play that bad apart from the poor corner and Fred's mistake of giving them the free kick.

I mentioned in our last game that Cavani's movement was excellent and thought he deserved to start. Comes on 2nd half and does that.

He really needs to be starting now and Martial should be on the bench.

Clear and obvious, unless you’re “Ole out”.
Yep with all the ole time talk you'd be forgiven for thinking this was a psg redux. It would have been unfair if we hadn't won and it is impressive we did show our persistence after many things went against us this game.

Matic was again poor. Too slow and too cumbersome.
2nd half was quite a good watch. VDB Fernandes and Cavani involved in everything. The team worked their socks off
Pogba is a commodity. His work rate poor and i cannot see him being first choice for utd ever again.

I'd have been much happier if he'd said he'd have been disappointed to lose because we'd played so well etc etc. rather than implying that he'd have been proud even if we'd lost. Just a tonality thing. Overall I'm pleased for him, the team and us all as supporters, of course. Just don't think a message of being happy to lose is the right signal. Maybe I'm misinterpreting - just struck me as an odd comment for our manager to make

What formation were we playing second half?

Looked like a 4-3-3 / 4-1-1 with Rashford on the right and VdB/Bruno switching who was on the left?

Was trying to work it out myself. It was very fluid with lots of interchanging, Cavani spent a fair amount of time on the right too.

Fantastic comeback and Ole got the subs spot on today. It really reminded me of games under Fergie actually.

Cavani is pure class. Has to start from now on surely.

Great comeback win.

Tbh with the current state of things in english and world football, considering the deepth we got, there's no reason why we shouldn't challenge for all the silverware this season.

Ok I got you now.
I suppose he was more talking about their attitude and mentality when we were behind? I think it goes without saying the lads know how big a disappointment it would be for everyone if they lost.

He wasn't poor at all. He is slow and can be cumbersome because of his size. But he had good positions, pushed Southampton wide and not through the middle and was combative in the middle of the pitch. Had good composure when on the ball.

Should have scored ourselves in the first half and then found ourselves two down. Don't give silly freekicks away in JWP range. DDG went off injured at half time and Ole brought on Deano and Cavani. We bossed the second half. Goals from Bruno and then two from Cavani. Exciting stuff. Was the caf sensible. Don't be silly, our course we weren't.

I said from the beginning we should have concentrated on replacing him instead of spending all that time on Sancho. This was the key position in my eyes. In any case, we'll just have to figure it out until we can fix this.

Although we were much the better team, there was a spell in the first half where we didn’t look too clever. Ole sorted that at half time which was good. But I wonder if there is anything we could have done before half time...? It’s always drastic to hook someone in the first half so probably was better to wait until the break but it was an anxious period and we didn’t look right. All good in the end of course.

absolutely. It should be who starts with Cavani next game now. He’s been our best forward in the last few games.

Southampton kicked the shit out of United while not doing anything except that. United should have gotten at least one goal but were not clinical at all. Southampton scored from a corner and free kick because James Ward-Prowse has the best set piece in the league and is in good form. DDG got injured after his knee hit the post diving trying to save the JWP free kick goal.

Henderson and Cavani on, DDG and Greenwood off at the break. United kept playing pretty well while Southampton didn't counter nor close down as much because they weren't tired, they just didn't do it well because United played well. Couldn't touch United in the second half. Cavani crossed from the right for Bruno. Bruno's ball from outside the box is deflected and headed into goal by Cavani. Southampton were out played throughout much of the match and finally, Marcus had his best moment of the match with an early cross into the box with Cavani making a near post run and a near post headed goal.

Cavani doesn’t have to be strong or quick enough to shrug off defenders. His movement is so good that he has enough space inside the box.

And he keeps the game simple when he’s away from the goal to move the ball and the game forward. That’s experience and playing to your strength. Move up the field, get to the D, find space to receive the ball, and shoot.

Started the 1st half well, Southampton could barely get into the game. Greenwood missed a good opportunity. They then scored from a corner, was very good delivery but pretty poor defending by Rashford who lost his man. We then had another top opportunity but Greenwood hit it at the keeper and Brunos rebound shot was saved close. Southampton then scored again this time due to a bad error by Fred giving a free kick away right on the edge of the box. Beautiful free kick though, De Gea smacked his knee into the post trying to save it. We then struggled after that panicked a bit before finally grabbing control of the game in the final few minutes of the 1st half.

The Caf imploded at this point as you can imagine. But we were the better team imo and it was frustrating that we threw away 2 goals like that after having such a good start.

Cavani came on for Greenwood and Henderson on for De Gea at half time. The rest of the 2nd half was about United slowly building momentum and pressure. We had lots of the ball, looked fitter and sharper across the pitch and we were able to get Cavani into the game around 55minutes in. Once Cavani was getting the ball Southampton bricked it. Cavani got the ball on the right and crossed it into the middle of the box where Bruno slapped it in. At this point it looked inevitable to me that we'd get a 2nd, the real question is whether we could get the winner. The rest of the match we kept building pressure and Southampton was going deeper and deeper. We had lots of chances and Cavani was the one with the composure to knock them in. Very good game by us, think we got it tactically right from the start we just made dumb individual errors and got punished at set pieces.

Very good performance by us and another game when we didn't really look that tired. Open play we looked far more inventive and were getting decent chances. Very promising.

Some interesting and very emotive comments, naturally. My thoughts are that it was a v poor game in terms of quality (who played well, and I mean on either side ???? ) aside from Cavani, who showed his class.

Don't, please don't tell me we played well, and don't have a go because I make such statements. That was two mid table teams going at it.

I cannot stand OGS as our manager, that's all I think when I watch us. There's nothing about us, at all, Southampton were rubbish. Rubbish.

Can't OGS see how we are playing?? Is he satisfied with this?

I am sorry, and I mean that, but I am not letting a win cloud my judgement. Does OGS really want us to compete for the Premiership title and Champions League? Because I cannot see it in our performances.

We're just another team, relying on inspirational moments. Bruno usually provides that, and today it was Cavani.
Belm.
