What has any of this got to do with my posts? I’m pointing out the blatant hypocrisy amongst certain posters who have been moaning non stop about the Sheffield loss (where the refs admitted they called two goals wrongly against us), and how those same exact posters are now claiming Milan won 2-1 on “legit goals”. Using their same brilliant logic they can now stop moaning about the Sheffield game because we actually won that game 2-1 on “legit goals”.

Reality is we lost to Sheffield. Reality is also that last night ended 1-1, not some fantasy scenario where Milan won on “legit goals”.
Fantasy scenarios like those in which we scored the two chances we got the entire game?

Kind of ironic how you are talking about missed setters as a metric but want to just ignore their correct goal as if it doesn't matter because it doesn't fit your narrative. Keep thinking we were the better team and deserved to win if that makes you feel better though.
Just checked the stats again. The game ended 1-1. Sorry to shatter your illusion but I couldn’t find a column which says we lost 1-2 on “legit goals”.

1-1 at home in a 2 legs tie is a shit result, you know that right?

I’m more glass half full. We suck at home, there is no home advantage, we’re better when we’re chasing rather than being chased in these situations. They might have a couple of players back but likewise we will be strengthened with Shaw and hopefully Rashford back. McT-Fred also work much better together rather than Matic paired with either of them. Milan are incapable of parking the bus so we will again get several chances to get a couple of away goals.

We may very well beat them or get a 2-2 draw. But they do not have to chase the game as it is 1-1 and away goals rule count double in case it is equal on goals aggregate. And they are very capable of parking the bus when they need. All Italian sides can. Catenaccio is Italian.

Nah those catenaccio sides are long gone. There won't be a 0-0 in 2nd leg although I wouldn't rule out us losing either. Ole is clueless in Europe and Milan can always show up in CL.

I wouldn’t call it shit and I struggle to see how people can think 1 away goal in first leg is always good thing for the away team. If anything before the match I hoped Milan don’t have more than 1 away goal. I believe this is still 50:50 and there is no justification who has more disadvantages from that 1-1 because United managed to avoid to conceded more than 1 away goal while Milan managed to avoid losing in away game.

I don’t believe it will be goalless 0-0 in 2nd leg, if anything this will put pressure on Milan try not to conceded a goal against one of the best team in scoring goals in PL this season.

This does not make much sense does it? They have scored an away goal. This will put pressure on us to go out and attack, while they can either counter attack or park a Boeing 777. If you ask any football player or coach out there, which result would they take at home in the first leg 0-0 or 1-1, they will pick the former. If you ask an away team they will choose the latter.

It won't make sense if you think the 2nd leg will be 0-0 goaless draw, indeed.

But do you think it will be 0-0? Because I don't think it will be 0-0 and I think we will see goals and we will score at least because our strength is actually scoring goals.

The fact you only give the 0-0 as an alternative draw option shows that we have more better realistic option to go into next round. Just one goal only will be enough to turn around the situation. Our tactic and mental in 2nd leg will be scoring goals because we need to score goal, their aim is to keep clean sheet and if they lose that one away goal, I wouldn't underestimate the negative effect of the changes on the home team.

Let's agree to disagree, because I am done with going in rounds. Hundred times out of hundred a home team will want prefer a goalless draw or a win, while an away team will prefer a non-goalless draw rather than a goalless draw. It really is that simple. Now, here is your quote again "...., if anything this will put pressure on Milan try not to conceded a goal against one of the best team in scoring goals in PL this season." This does not make any sense. Milan would always think of defense first unless we won. We bottled, so if the next starts 0-0 and ends the same way, Milan qualify. In order to break this deadlock, Man Utd HAVE TO score. The pressure is on us.

Yes, we have to agree to disagree here because we are going to circle if you keep using 0-0 as alternative draw option when there are 2-2 and 3-3 which also other realistic draw option that can happen.

I have said it before, 1 away goal of 1-1 draw in first leg is not enough to put a team into better position especially against a team who is very good in scoring goals. We aren't playing against Atl Madrid or Chelsea or Mourinho team who can defend or park the bus here.

We've had three 0-0 draws in our last five games. It's a strange time to be so confident we won't have another one.

Hes on course to finish in the top 4 in his first two full seasons. Which is more than his two predecessors did. And they both got backed a hell of a lot more.

Under Solskjaer I actually have a passion to watch the team again.

Anyway I know all this crying is just due to one bad result.Barely saw any crying when we were top of the league.

Solskjaer is doing fine and sacking him will do nothing. He hasn't had chance to finish his job yet.

a couple more players that he wants and fit Pogba and this team will be fighting at the top again under Ole
This is where you're way off the mark. Putting other seasons aside where we've had terrible performances, this season how many games have we played? 40-45? Out of all these games I'm roughly guessing that in terms of performance

25% above average
25% average
50% below average.

These are obviously my own take on how the season is panning out which is why I personally don't think Ole is doing a fantastic job.

Please feel free to put your own thoughts in %s in how you think our season is panning out.

You're probably right but the only clause(excuse?) I'd add is that it's the same for nearly all the other teams. Should we cut the team some slack given the circumstances?

Leicester for example. They get applauded all round but actually, if you watch their games, they haven't bern great this season. They're plodding, very similar to us.

It’s amazing how extreme the opinions are in this thread, clearly the team have room for improvement but Ole isn’t exactly doing an awful job either.

Ole isn’t going anywhere if he makes top 4 this season, hopefully we can pick up a trophy but if not then he will still be here next year.

I would say currently is is a solid ‘B’ or maybe a ‘B-‘ at worst, the transfer window this year will be very important.

Hopefully our board show some ambition this summer to make some major signings but I have my doubts on that front. If we don’t we can expect more of the same, it’s clear this is our current level as Mou and LVG were unable to do any better with this group.

Because AC Milan isn't Chelsea and Palace. Like I said before, we are not playing against a team that can park the bus or team that can defend here.

Ole is doing a decent job but decent isn't what Manchester United is all about. Expected a dip post Sir Alex but what has followed has been nothing short of a disaster. Our standards have been lowered so much that we see what Ole is achieving now as great when it's not what we should be aiming for.

I'll give him another season as there are little signs things are changing but the honeymoon period for Ole is well and truly over and we have to start judging him by higher standards. One thing he should do asap is quit playing this 4231 and go for a simple 433 with a holding midfielder and two AMs. Playing Bruno infront of McT and Fred just isn't it.

Personally I don't believe in using other teams as a metric to how we perform. Our biggest rivals have only themselves to blame for the situation that they're in. For Lampard it was a step too big for him at Chelsea. Arteta the jury is still out on him but having a not very good Arsenal side obviously doesn't help him. Mou is always going to Mou and Klopp even though I love to see it hasn't been that lucky with injuries.

Leicester I can understand. They work on a lot less budget than us and have a smaller squad. It's like groundhog day with them. Near the top at Xmas but when teams go into the final straight injuries always catch up with them and they run out of steam.

Take a look at the whole league though. Who is actually playing really well, above expectations? West Ham?

I wouldn't even say City are. Great winning run but its a bit like our away record, how much of it is down to circumstances.

I've watched City quite a bit, they're not great, they just keep the ball well and rotate to keep players fresh. Which is enough right now.

I'm rarely impreseed when I watch Everton, as mentioned same with Leicester.

The whole league looks average this year, same with Champions League.

So I find it hard to compartmentalise all that and still expect us to produce entertaining, winning football.

Of course I like Ole so this could be excuse making.

Erm no.

Unlike the modern internet fan, I don’t care about percentages, about xG or what @utdloser on Twitter thinks

I’m enjoying watching the team play again, very supportive of the manager and looking forward to getting back to watch the team

Massive week for him. Playing in both cup competitions. Have to progress in a minimum of one or our season is finished.

Need a trophy and he should be expected to win it or get to the final at the very least

That’s just simply not true if you look at where we are now versus when Ole took over.
Better in the league. A good bit worse in cup competitions. Has to be reaching finals and winning them this season.

Progress is overstated as things stand. Let's see what happens.

It is funny how some always look at our bad performances in isolation but look at the occasional good game as part of a grand scheme.
4/5 of our performances are below par with one not being able to understand what we are trying to do on the pitch.
How can people not realise this? I am not even a results oriented fan. There is a reason coaches/managers always talk about focusing on the performance of the team. Results always revert to the mean.
Imo, we are at the same stage we are in the 17/18 season. I watch this team and wonder how the feck we are second, that's not sustainable. We have experienced it time and time again over the last 7 years. I am at a loss at those who don't see any problem. Just saying we are second doesn't cut it. Until this team has a semblance of a well functioning unit and gives players the platform to consistently perform, we will always struggle.

I don't think a lot has changed in the league tbh. How many seasons have we had a top 4 where there were few points separating 1st from 4th? Very few I would think. I've already mentioned our main rivals and the reasons I think they're not doing as well as they should.

City as you mentioned haven't been (as) entertaining this season but maybe it's more to do with the pragmatism of Pep than anything else. They had a horrible start (yes, due to little preseason) and he's had to change his style of play. They aren't as gung-ho as in other seasons but it's obviously working so he's not going to change now.

Teams like Everton and Leicester are what they are. Decent first 11 with decent managers but bar a freak season (Leicester) they're never going to set the PL on fire and suddenly become entertaining on a consistent basis.

Moyes is doing well but what he is doing is taking advantage of poor results from teams expected to finish above him. The only teams that I've seen a drop off are SU and maybe wolves but it was unrealistic to expect them to be in the top 6 of the PL.

On your bolded sentence. Maybe after 2 1/2 years we should be expected to see some marked improvement in how we play football. Yes we've had some great results/performances which are rightly praised for but on the whole our performances have been underwhelming in large parts of the season even if results have went our way. Contrary to belief most people who don't think Ole is the one to take us forward don't moan about individual games but take Oles tenure as a whole, while others take results like PSG, Leipzig or City and use it in their defence for the manager which is fair enough. The difference between Ole in/out I think is some choose to look at results while others choose to look at performances and the 2 aren't mutually inclusive.

Fair enough. Each to their own. I was just making a general statement that people think that Ole isn't the one are kneejerk supporters because the forum is in uproar after a draw/loss and sometimes even after a win when in reality what they are doing is taking the season (s) as a whole and looking at performances and not results. When studied over a (long?) period of time kneejerk shouldn't come into the conversation when criticising the manager/players.

Know there will be many who disagree but if he was more open to making changes to his coaching staff and finally actually sees there is a huge problem with having only one DM (over the hill) in the whole squad I could get behind him more. I want to believe he will do something about it in the summer but then see absolutely no links to anyone and realise he is blind to the issue.

I think we are better placed to judge once the window has come and gone. I don’t think we can judge based on newspaper rumours.

There is no logic in your claim. When the game start on Thursday, Milan would qualify if it ends with the same result. If they are under pressure, we are absolutely under much more pressure.

I have come to the conclusion that the owners are happy even if we don't win anything so long as we qualify for CL.
They will not buy top class players while our competitors like City or Chelsea will buy those players.
A top class manager is not going to accept it. That's why they are going to keep Ole. He is not going to jeopardise his job because he knows that he is not going to get another gig like this.

When did Chelsea last buy top class players better than the likes of Pogba, Bruno, Maguire or Shaw?

I disagree provisionally. If solskjaer has us follow up last years 3rd with 2nd, and the real caveat here being a trophy, eg the Europa League, his stock as a manager would be reasonably high in summer.

A trophy, experience with a huge club, successive CL qualifications. There are plenty of big sized clubs who would consider him. Again, a trophy probably essential to this, but it's not like it's United or molde under 16s.

Except it's really not...
We've spent £130m on defenders and £120m on attackers (not counting Diallo yet) and we've gone from 81 points (José's final season) to 66 points (José/Ole) to 66 points in the league (Ole), while doing worse in the cups. Is that really two steps forward and one step back?

I think his point was more that those clubs owners are at least willing to give their manager the funds to sign the best players whereas ours are just happy to accept top 4 every season and nothing more, in regards to Maguire I think the jury is still out on him being on the same level as those others you mentioned.
