The midfield 3 that started against Wolves would have been better than this trio. It’s not so much the quality, but the qualities. A Scott, Pogba and Bruno midfield cannot play with intricacy.

We shouldn't have played Pogba in CM alongside McT. He hasn't played there for quite some time. Also this shit defence need all the protection it can get. It was evident even when we could rely on Maguire let alone now that we're without him.

Also what is Ole waiting to start drilling his team for set pieces?
I tend to agree but it's hard learning a softie like Lindelof to grow a pair

Come on guys, don’t be so depressed. We have show often enough that we can be a different team from an half to another. Believe !

    No surprises here
    United rubbish at set pieces
Emery is master tactical defensive coach so don’t concede first against him
United are a 2nd half team

The problem is not the players but our style (work slowly forward) and a packed defence. Can Villa keep this up for 90mins - probably
They'll also fancy another goal. We're wretched at the back, particularly set pieces.

    Pogba and Rashford absolute shite.

Rashford touch terrible, and the actions he's attempting are ridiculous.

Pogba..for a 6, a playmaker, has NO understanding as to how to find space and get on the ball. That period after their goal imo watched him like a hawk and not once did he make a successful burst or movement into a suitable space to receive from the CBs...and the space is there. Scholes in his latter days knew exactly how to receive a pass in the tightest of areas, and ping within an instant. Pogba wants space and seconds and is not agile enough to withstand pressure.

These two so far are really costing us within this setup. Bruno is AWOL, but as expected against this Villeareal approach.

Greenwood best player. Cavani just after him.

Villarreal playing smart football and at present everything we try turns to rubbish.

A lot to do. Nothing worse than going 1 down to these.

We're letting them control the space in behind too easily. We need to play it early into the space in behind or do what rashford and greenwood did at the end there and just run past the slow fecks.

I'm not surprised in the slightest though, seen about 20 games like this this season. Let's just hope it's one of those we turn it round.

Villareal found a way to nullify us, we don't do too well against low blocks. Ole has to earn his money and find an answer.

Not catching the full game at work, but it seems that ‘big game’ Rashford hasn’t quite shown up again the last few months. Saw that MEN gave him a 3. Is that a warranted rating?
One moment of quality aside, he's been dreadful.

Tbf it's not like we are getting shredded through the midfield, McFred wouldn't have stopped that goal and we've had twice the possession they have. Our inability to defend set pieces with any confidence is growing really fecking old though, agreed.

Could well be, I'd have Scholes over them every day regardless of G+A.

When will people accept that Greenwood isn’t the player we need replacing in this lineup...Rashford is a really poor footballer.

Pogba is passing the buck. Countless times our cb's and fb's have passed the ball to him in the middle and he passes it back to them nearly always! Those defenders then pass it to people upfront but the quality is missing. WTF is pogba there for ? receive the ball and pass it forward instead of back to the defenders.

We need to go around sides of them to break them down. Swap Rashford and Greenwood for now.

Seeing Cavani run all the way back from CF when Villarreal were on the counter-attack sums it up really. I'm just dying for Rashford, just once to show anything like that kind of defensive w.ork-rate. You can excuse his continuous poor form but you can't excuse effort levels when a 34 year old CF is busting his ass off on both ends of the field

That was depressing half of football, too slow at everything, amazes me we never recognise thats the issue and try to speed up our passing and movement. Does not mean we‘ll suddenly start to tear through them but at least try it.

Feck me, Villareal defend deeper than a Jose team usually does! This is gonna be purgatory to watch

Dont think we have been awful, not got the run of the ball and two slow going forward. Have to say though, a couple of poor performances and individual errors.....same names again as per usual. Inconsistent Rashford, been dreadful bar that last run when the final ball was poor, Fernandes in a big game giving the ball away and getting frustrated, think he has been decent but the sloppy 5mins we gave the goal away......Pogba sloppily gave it away twice in dangerous areas.....led to DeGea doign a mini rick with his ball out....give away a free kick and low and behold Lindelof yet again is clueless defending a cross.

Bissaka, Greenwood, Sawh and Cavani have all been good. Mctominay usual hard working self with not much else.

Villareal are well organised and har dot break down....they arent that good though, we need a goal and can then go on, ut a few need to step up

Sancho would be playing instead of an injured Rashford.
I'd agree in general, although I see Greenwood central.

I don't think we should be paying Villarreal, all due respect, and thinking the reason we're playing badly is because we need Sancho however. Genuinely think Dan James on the LW would be better than Rashford right now and he should never have started (he's been injured for months as well). That or just go 442 given they are just sitting so deep, Greenwood needs more of the ball and Bruno needs to actually play as an AM versus these guys, not think he's a striker.

No Cup Final, especially a European Cup Final, is a straight forward win

That’s setting yourself up to look silly
Eh not really. This is simply not true. Finals can be straightforward wins. Hell, our last EL final was a straightforward win.

We're head and shoulders better than these lot today. I'm pretty sure their plan will completely collapse if we equalize.

    Dig up stupid!
I said it this morning. Villareal will slow the game down and make it a bitty scrappy affair. They were time-wasting from literally their first throw in!

We've played right into their hands though, nervous, safety first play is exactly the game they want. We have to go 100mph, if our 2 CBs can't handle the 1 or maximum 2 runners they counter with then they shouldn't be at the club

We absolutely must ramp this muthafcker up to 11 or we'll rue this chance. They're rubbish and we're letting them off the hook. The 2 times we've actually ran at them we've got a past them like they weren't there

    Step the fck up!

Their defensive organisation has been good though. Their bus is one Mou would be proud of.
We are playing at walking pace, it's not that hard really to defend against that. A couple times Greenwood and Rashford tried to make runs at the end of half, they looked vulnerable.

    Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.
Our CBs are killing us. Bailly is taking forever and constantly ignoring runs in behind as has no confidence to go long. And Lindelof on the left side has no confidence bringing the ball out. Stick axel on and put Lindelof RCB where despite being weak he can hit a pass.

Really poor half from us. Hard to watch. We just have no answers to them sitting deep so far. We badly need to up the tempo. But it's very worrying, especially the lack of ideas an creativity.

So predictable that they would score from a set piece as that is an obvious weakness for us. Around that time we looked terrified to be in possession of the ball and kept giving it back to them or getting involved in scrappy bits of play that resulted in a free kick for them.

Very frustrating but I still have some hope.

I don't care about how good his stats appear to be, its infuriating how often Rashford has a terrible general performance.

    Frustrating half.

One chance has to come our way. Just one. We're winning this.
Yeah that’s what kept thinking. But we got to get at them from the first minute as if it is 5 mins to go. Come on lads we deserve the win.

This is about as close to Drillo-football you can get. Very difficult for us. Rashy had a bad start but some good moves late in the first half. I am still hopeful the boys can turn this around.

Put some pressure on them, get some deliveries and numbers in the box. Kill them out wide. Stop passing the ball 300 times for no reason. Let's play some proper United football and we should be fine. This team is offering nothing.

Looking at the replay, that goal wasn’t on Lindelof. Moreno was behind Lindelof, someone lost him.

There no space to play into. Bruno in particular is swamped

Awful start. Villareal looks much better coached than us. Also feel like they are mentally more up for it. Strange given that Unai Emery bottled it with Arsenal mostly, but doing great here.
Don’t agree at all. We press high up, win most of the duels and is the only team trying to attack. But once again we are poor at defending set pieces and that has cost us.
