Really poor first half and a typical Lindelof-Bailly ball watching error for the goal. Our usual two problems are costing us:

    1) We don't know how to play out from the back or pass through a press.

    2) In the final 3rd we don't know what we're supposed to be doing, don't look like a team and are relying on an individual to pluck something out of thin air.

We haven't created any chances and Villarreal are well organised - unless we significantly up the tempo of our passing, we're going to have a very bad night.

    Big 45 minutes ahead.

That goal is even worse looking back.
8 defenders v 4 attackers, and Gerard just cruises in, and even Lindelof tugging his shirt can't do anything.

I heavily criticized Lindelof for that originally, but looking at Rios breakdown it was made difficult for him by having someone that wasn't his man given the run on him. We need to be more physical there all round.

I'm just so frustrated with how terrible we are from set pieces its so predictable. Lindelof is just such an ordinary player.

Obviously biggest 45 minutes of the season coming up, we can't be losing a EL final. IT's unthinkable.

Ole is whole season playing with two dmc and today in most important game of season he says; i decided to put Paul in midfield because we are attacking team. Wtf? Final is played for the win. From all games, final is only game where nobody cares about style, tactics, lineup....only important is to win it.

Our movement really needs to improve 2nd half. Players are far too static, Villarreal are camped on the edge of their box half the time and our man on the ball has zero options, no runs at all and it’s very easy to defend. Hope Ole goes through them at half time.

What's so weird about us that between Pogba, Rashford and Fernandes we should have some real threat from distance. But we're not even trying. I know it's congested in there, but we need a bit of luck imo.

Does feel like playing Burnley though.
Yeah I feel like apart from the Cavani goal we just haven't had that many bangers in recent years.

Passing the ball into the goal
    Losing in semis
    Optimistic about young players
    Concede set pieces

    We've become Arsenal

When will people accept that Greenwood isn’t the player we need replacing in this lineup...Rashford is a really poor footballer.
His complete lack of intensity/interest and effort is what gets me most.

He had one good moment in the entire half, when he lost the ball really cheaply and actually worked to win it back before producing a really nice piece of skill. For a brief moment, almost instinctually, he was actually engaged in the game...and it's no coincidence that it was his best phase of play.

A long standing problem for us.

It's all a bit slow from us, but I'm still confident we can turn this around. The first half was the story of our season, let's produce one of our typical 2nd half come backs!
Agree we have had these halves before. Just think we look more nervous since it is a final and not mentally right for the game. Hopefully we can be fired up for the second half. Cavani can be key since he got experience from big games before. Pogba can hopefully raise the level too and Bruno.

I'm not trying to be kneejerk here but from a sporting POV there's not much doubt that Rashford could be upgraded. While he is a good player he is nowhere near consistant enough to warrant the status he got in world football. He is simply not good enough to be our starman but he's capable of something out of the blue that once in a while will grab headlines. He's a credit to the club, shame he doesn't deliver consistently on the pitch.

Bar that one dribble at the end this was simply a 1/10 performance.

Watching a replay, gotta say that is an absolutely perfect delivery on their goal.

Also, why aren't we all in a line along the box like literally every other team in that situation? Playing those few yards up are what created the chance.

Pogba is passing the buck. Countless times our cb's and fb's have passed the ball to him in the middle and he passes it back to them nearly always! Those defenders then pass it to people upfront but the quality is missing. WTF is pogba there for ? receive the ball and pass it forward instead of back to the defenders.
    Why the bigger font?

Anyone defending Lindelof. He’s marking no one and not once checks behind him. Why is one of our CBs not marking a player on a set piece?

Looking at the replay, that goal wasn’t on Lindelof. Moreno was behind Lindelof, someone lost him.
It was on Lindelöf. Just as much as it was on our player's player of the season who decided to turn wank in the deciding weeks of the season.

Honestly, besides the FK, is Rashford that much of a true threat from distance, especially during open play?

Absolutely symptomatic of our season. Concede from a set-piece and play at a walking pace for lots of the first half. Now we just need the comeback.

Rashy out, Donny in, Pogba to the left and try to dominate tight spaces. Also grandpa Mata could prove usefulin the last 10 minutes or so
Absolutely, if Villarreal are sitting deep with 15 mins to go. Put Mata on and let him try his one-to-ones near the penalty area. Much more effective than just running into the defenders.

Villarreal aren’t going to play through us. Next to zero chance it happens but I’d take Rashford off. Get Donny or Amad on.
Well Donny is more experienced in european knockout football but then Amad got the goal against Milan so can do it on this stage as well

It’s a partly a consequence of having no wingers to stretch the play. If we are still a goal down after 60 mins and the game is very much attack vs defence, I’d take McT off, move Bruno also to the double pivot, and instruct James to hug the touchline, looking to overlap and cross with the full back.
