I’ve never understood the retrospective judgment on manager decisions when looking back at what could have been.
Every player becomes what he is due to a number of factors including his environment, the coaching and the team he develops in.
But looking back at transfers that could have been is foolish because there’s no guarantee the player would become what he is today if he came to United.
Even though I hate Jose, there’s no guarantee KDB or Salah would be as good as they are today if they did not leave Chelsea and try elsewhere.
Would Ronaldinho been as good as he was if he came to Utd instead of developing in a star studded Barca team.

Varane's transfer is also, largely, about timing. Mourinho wanted him, along with Maguire. But timing and the board was against Mourinho. Eventually it seems like they both made their way to United, which is always a good thing.

That's exactly what he does. Nobody in the world is that well connected. It's impossible. And there's nothing wrong with it either. However it's what he does. He follows the right people.
If you are naive enough to believe he's an actual transfer guru who knows the insides of every major club in the world then that's on you.
And let's be frank he didn't get the Sancho stuff right either. He didn't know about the one yr extension at Dortmund last summer when we tried to get him and he got the fee wrong this year.
