9 of them came from Southampton played almost from the start 1 man down then two. I will not boasting those as achievement if I am a man utd fan. Meaning literally 6 goals you scored more. That's not bigger achievement in my opinion.
With that logic do we take away our heavy defeat at Spurs as it was 1-1 until the red-card?
forgetting your achievement in the Champions league which is a massive achievement and no one can take that away, there is nothing to suggest unless you do more business that you’ll finish above us or city.

It's your perception that you can finish above us. Well that's your opinion though. We will find in 9 months time who finished where.

We already achieved cl with what we got. We also will improve some more points with tuchel from start. We signed one striker to address our problem in scoring goals. I can say we will win premier league title because of optimism we have. Can you say the same?

Yes you scored more goals but it's not like some 50 more goals. It's mere 16 goals despite we played negative football as you said it's really explained your team s attack more than anything.

I’ve just been listening to people on talksport say that it’s between City and Chelsea for the league. Really???
so Chelsea brought Werner in last season at a high cost, he scored 34 goals the season before last in Germany including 4 in the champions league and had a record of 91 in just over 200 games, that’s prolific.

Last season Chelsea scraped 4th l, we out scored them by 15 goals and only Arsenal and Villa scored less in the top 10.
With 58 league goals that tells most of us that it’s not just the striker, it’s the style of play and defensive tactics. Man Utd are going to score more this year, we all feel it, not just because of Sancho, Bruno will rise to the crowd, Cavani will get more starts, Greenwood I think will score close to 20 he’s just getting better and better, Rashford will fly after his surgery, Pogba needs to impress for his dream move. Chelsea did have the second best defence conceding 34, the question is does Varane with Maguire who’s not just come off an arrest in Greece mean we can concede 8 less and be as good in defence as Chelsea.
Personally I think it does. Does Lukaku mean that Chelsea will score 15 more goals? I don’t think it matters as we’ll outscore them anyway.
People who say it's between City and Chelsea are looking at their spend and that one won EPL the other won UCL, last season. But that is an incredibly simplistic view and thankfully football is way more nuanced than that, yes even with oil money fecking everything up.

I am really looking forward to the new season but I wish we would have offloaded a bunch of players like Pogba, Jesse, Martial, and bought couple of good midfielders instead

So much nonsense in this thread.

It seems inconceivable to many here that maybe..just maybe, Lukaku simply just progressed and improved as a player.

He'll score his usual 20 or so league games yes, and smash the smaller teams.
But has his "brick wall" ball control changed? Will he score in the big games? Jury is out.
Chelsea had a lot of chances to put games to bed last season if not for dire, profligate finishing. Even accepting Lukaku as a poor big game performer, he'll convert at a high clip against the so-called fodder, but it's not just goal tallies here. He's a good dummy runner and he demands constant attention even when off the ball, which will open the field for teammates and should, theoretically, see the attackers raise their output as a unit.

If you watch him for Belgium, he has a lot more fluidity to his play now than he did even a couple of years ago. If I were to pick a best fit in the league for Lukaku's style, it would've been Chelsea, and they're getting a fitter, smarter, more willing Lukaku than we did with a point to prove.

Whatever Lukaku's peak is, I think it'll be realised at Chelsea as it's a perfect storm from him improving as a player to the way they play and the scores I believe he'll want to settle.

Not going to be a popular opinion but he’s a great player and this will be a great signing. This was their biggest hole and they’ve just filled it with a guarantee of quality and goals. Their squad was in a position where they had the luxury to splurge on one position.

Be curious to see how Big Rom does in the PL. I never warmed up to the player when he was at United, and I was surprised to see him do so well in Serie A - but in hindsight, Conte's tactics and the league overall were tailor made for his strengths - which is why it's strange to see him back in the PL. I guess the prestige of the PL, the money and Chelsea were too much for him to resist.

I think he will start on fire and then fade badly. Well, here's hoping anyways.

United minus the Glazers
Haven't seen him much at the Euros or at Inter. Has his first touch improved? Or was that a made-up weakness by irate fans?

I think Inter had to sell, their owner have money problems.
But on top of that, yeah, Chelsea is just a more attractive option considering Conte is no longer at Inter anyway. Hard to say no for Lukaku.

Can't stand him. Hopefully he goes the same way as every other Chelsea striker in the last 15 years to wear the #9.

Great comparison
Wasn't comparing just using him as an example. It's also funny because that same poster use to slate Hazard back in 2015 for not doing in the big games but rates Bruno.

You are comparing a player maker to an out and out striker - like seriously?! It actually goes to show how incredible Bruno has been. 60 goals and assists in 85 games for Utd is not comparable.
No i was just using him as an example. All attacking players get judged on goals, assists and wha they do in the big games. I wasn't saying Bruno was a bad player.

He’ll score goals. How many? My tea leaves don’t extend to that

I believe he did well against the top teams in Serie A these last 2 seasons, but I agree mainly I think he's usefulness will come against the mid table sides, however Chelsea are champions of Europe, without him, so they can cope if he doesn't perform, but I'll wait on that as they have a lot more attacking quality around him plus a coach like Tuchel he may deliver.
Not really. He scored one goal against Juventus his entire stay in Italy, a penalty that he had nothing to do with winning. That and his performances at the business end of their European campaigns are why Inter fans are happy to see him go for a monster fee. I watch Inter almost every week. He's the same player we let go.

One of our closest rivals just sorted out one of their biggest weaknesses, I'd say that's cause for concern.

A two minute video across two seasons means a lot less than 64 goals and 16 assists over the same period.

United fans have really fallen on hard times when they prioritize finishing 2nd over winning the Champions league. You only need look at the clean sheets we kept and the records we set to know there was nothing flukey about the win. By any measure it was a well deserved trophy.

Put that 2nd place trophy next to those second place medals you got against that super club Villarreal.
Why are you lot acting like United fans are gloating? It was a Chelsea fan gloating about how you always finish above us.The other posters are just pointing out how daft that statement was!

You're talking to the three time, reigning, defending oppo poster of the year. Show some respect.

My posts don't "emanate an air of arrogance", apart from this one.
Its good you're here because the rest of your lot post like lukaku controls a ball.

Is Maguire crap too then? Go on twitter and watch endless fail tweets for Maguire mistakes. Would make you think he is a terrible player.

He’s a very good striker and will score lots of goals. As ever with Lukaku that isn’t really up for debate.

But he was never a proper United player and we were right to move him on when we did. Chelsea is a better fit for him at this point in his career, although I expect the same frustrations will remain when push comes to shove.

I'd imagine Chelsea fans are feeling excited when looking at his highlights. It's only when you've to watch him week in week out that it becomes apparent how limited he is outside of the games against cannon fodder. Will forward to seeing the realisation unfold.

No because we have the pleasure of watching him week in week out where more often than not, he is class. The same cannot be said of Lukaku. That sort of stuff was what I saw all the time from Lukaku playing for Utd. I can't wait for Chelsea fans to also realise this.

His goalscoring record was solid for us, but lots of fans were happy to see him go. Ignore non-penalty goals and he only scored slightly more in Italy than he did for United.

The issue with Lukaku is that his all-around game is so flaky that it undermines the general attacking play of the wider team. Ole was happy to sell him because, on balance, the goals he scored didn't outweigh the amount he dragged the overall attack down. Similar to when we sold Ruud, the following season no-one scored as many as he had individually but collectively we improved up front.

What we see in that video is so typical of United-era Lukaku that its hard to feel that he'll be much different to how he was with us. I certainly don't see a player that's turned a corner in his career, just one playing in a more functional team than we were, in a weaker league, and so scoring a few more.

So stats can be used to judge or defend players? What a surprise, I thought it shouldn't be used at all.

It's cause for concern that our rivals signed a player who scored + assisted 65 goals (excluding penalties) or 80 goals + assists including penalties in last 2 season.

At the same time, lets shit on one of our players who contributed to 62 goals + assists (excluding penalties) or 70 goals + assists including penalties in last 2 seasons.

Apparently stats shouldn't be used to defend ManUtd players, it should be only for Non-ManUtd players/

A lot of our attacks fell away with Lukaku up top. Intricate play around the box wasn’t possible but that stats doesn’t tell you that.
Lukaku may get 20 goals for them but feck me the players around him will suffer for it.

Most of that was the same as any other player if you looked for lowlights over a season, or things that didnt come off. There were some really shit touches too. Rooney had plenty of them, still scored a lot of goals

I'm very pleased that they are buying Lukaku, as I was getting worried that Haaland would end up at Chelsea.
I do believe Lukaku will score a decent amount of goals for them, but I think if they were able to get Werner firing - they'd already have a better striker than Lukaku within their ranks. Big IF though.

It's ok to make mistakes, but I just can't get over his lack of self awareness. Makes a terrible pass then blames his teammates for not anticipating his bad pass and being somewhere else? It's infuriating. Wouldn't have him here simply for that reason.

I agree with the general point you're making but this Lukaku is a lot better than the version we signed from Everton. His hold up play is much better and he's lethal running in from the channels. He'll also be playing in a similar system to what he did at Inter and Belgium so the goal tally might be similar but his general game play is much better.

I'm assuming this is in response to my views on Rashford. I'm not totally against stats, it just gets irritating when posters use Rashford's stats as a way of absolving him of any criticism. You can criticise Lukaku's weaknesses by all means but he was voted Serie A's MVP and led Inter to a first title in a decade. Surely that's more meaningful than a meme video?

When he was here, absolutely correct but he's able to play more intricate stuff now. He's by no means Berbatov and still has horrendous touches at times but I've seen him link up much better with teammates at Inter and Belgium than he ever did with us. Who's to say he won't improve even further with Tuchel's coaching.
