See I have nothing wrong with this if that’s the case we need to have squad players as well as first teamers but to not sign a contract just doesn’t add up..
Why would he sign a contract until he’s sure that he’s getting a fair chance at United to show that he can still cut it there?
on the other side United made it known that his price is 25m. Surprise surprise nobody came in for him at that price when in January they can get him on a pre-contract.

don’t forget that Jesse has some major off the field responsibilities that would floor many of us. He probably doesn’t want to disrupt his life unless he absolutely unequivocally has too. So he’s trying last chance saloon and if it doesn’t work then he can find Something that suits with more options on the table rather than being restricted by a nonsense price

So to reject a contract with the reason you want first team football is laughable when you had the chance to move for it. Can't stand players like this, money is important than playing time. The fact he is picked by England when not starting games for his club and someone like Greenwood isn't is more of a joke.
What’s the England situation got to do with lingard?

Except he doesn't seem to be fine with sitting on the bench every week, at least according to recent reports?

If that is the case and OGS doesn't have much of a use for him this season, I would've sold him. His value after his impressive stint at West Ham was probably as high as it has ever been.
You can only sell a player if you know other teams actually submit bids, and not just WH.

He’ll have the same roll at United as he always had, to think he’s coming back to play in front of Bruno or Ronaldo is a bit far fetched, he would know this himself.

It just doesn’t sit well with me after all United have done for him, when they go to protect an asset he lets them down, not once but twice..

But he has rejected the contract offer saying he wants first team football so the above is not the case.
I don't think he wants to be first choice. But he does want to be playing first team minutes - basically the same minutes that VDB got last season.

I'd guess his hesitance is due to being unsure about whether he's going to be sitting on the substitute bench or sitting up in the stands with the WAGs every week.

Letting them down? Are you having a laff?
United don’t do anything to help their ‘assets’ other than price them at a price where they get no buyers until players are practically free or totally free - see Romero, Darmien, Rojo, etc
Good for Jessie doing what is right for him and his circumstances. He’s got a little sister to raise and an ill mother to look after. It’s amazing how many of you fail to take those important facts into the equations

Yeah the club needs to do better at timing our selling. No more extensions to bit-part players on fat contracts. We end up spending an extra couple millions because other clubs just wait to pick them up on a free anyway.

Yeah they do nothing except nurture them from they were a child into a professional footballer and give them a massive 100k a week contract, shame on them not wanting to see an asset leave on a free.

He hardly played last season, if Lingard wants that, what is point of being a footballer. VDB himself isn't satisfied with the playing time he is getting.

And that only happens if the player is open to moving to certain clubs, which I assume was the main problem. But then again, with club finances being the way they were/are, we had more important positions to fill than finding a squad player to replace Lingard, so perhaps keeping him for a year isn't the worst decision.

I do believe if we had told him he'd not be more than a squad/fringe player, he probably would've reconsidered his options but sure, if we were to sell him for 15 to 20 million pounds, we'd have to find somebody else for that type of money.

I was merely pointing out my frustration of him being picked when he isnt even getting in United's first 11. Additionally, if he wants to be considered for a WC place, how is sitting on the bench going to do him any favours this season when he had the option of first team football with West Ham. Baffling really.

I suppose he wants one more shot at being a regular player at a club like United before settling for the likes of West Ham (no offense). He's had a good spell there and thus his confidence must be high enough to believe he can succeed here as well. If he doesn't, his value will probably still be good enough to find a decent PL club next season.

Planning a head.

He'll be 29 in December and he's achieved enough to land a long contract at a club who can pay him good wages.

The difference between a 4 year contract at £60k per week and £100k per week is about £9m. All for the sake of waiting one extra year and training everyday with your mates and Ronaldo.

Can't really blame him can you.

Are we sure this is true? Did the club accept any bids for him? Seems we didn't want to sell him

He did not have a contract. His original contract expired in June 2021 but we fecking renewed it for a year...
Yeah but we were always going to trigger the option to try to sell him. No idea what month we took the option up but I suspect it was before the window opened .

Why is it strange? Does every loanee join the club they played for briefly on loan? I must have missed that rule
It's not a rule, obviously, but after that excellent spell there, it would be logical to go back, when it's obvious that he's not getting serious playing time here.

It's not like WH is a team in relegation battle, they have really good team now and will be fighting for Europan competition places surely. Also, I don't recall that some other top teams were interested, so for me it's strange.

At the end of the day, it's always his decision, but he'll just waste another season from sport's view of things.

For Man United as a club this went really bad, because obviously he'll leave for free next summer.

When Smalling knew he was down the pecking order, he pushed hard for a move and was sold under the club's valuation.

If Lingard wanted guaranteed game time, he could've easily achieved that.

Lingard is a United fan. He'll be happier with it than VDB was. That's what a competitive squad needs.

Chelsea literally had a hard time getting rid of Zouma because he only wanted to stay in London. Players can only be sold to where they want to go.
And yet they sold him for 30 mill loool. If only we could have as hard a time at getting rid of players as Chelsea we might've been able to sell Andreas, Lingard etc..

To be honest as much as I think footballers have the right to run their contract down if they wish. If he has indicated to the club that he doesn't want to be sold yet won't consider signing a new deal unless he gets X amount of minutes (which I understand) then I don't think the club should be held to ransom. In that scenario he shouldn't be taking any minutes off the likes of DVB or the younger players like Elanga or Diallo who potentially have a future at Manchester United and are trying to prove themselves. He could still be loaned to a championship club so he can get playing time to keep himself match fit and in England contention.

Make up your minds, either you want him to leave or you want him to stay? Oh wait you want him to sign a contact just so you can sell him?
you’ve literally listened to nothing. If he goes free, which is his right; he has more options which will suit his family circumstances.
He has to do what is right for him.
He owes United nothing. Just as United feel they owe players nothing in many cases before him

You can't sell a player who does not want to go, Zouma was willing to go as long as it was within London. The difference between Jesse and Darmian, Romero, Andreas is that these other 3 wanted to leave and we priced them out of moves.

I guess the stranger thing, rather than the whole contract thing and wanting to live near his family, is that he states the reason he doesn't want to sign a new contract is because he wants to keep himself in contention for England WC22. However he must know that he is going to get very few minutes under Ole, unless we get massive injuries. Now we all know Southgate does not necessarily pick based on form, etc, so maybe he feels the odd cameos and cup game will be enough to see him be in contention for England, that bit makes less sense than his contract situation.

Should have forced him out this was his plan all along. Get to train with Ronaldo and be part of the Sanch and Beanz club and then leave on a free getting a fat wage and signing on bonus in a years time. He's played a blinder tbf.

We should have just let him know he wouldn't play a single game and reduced the asking price to about 15m and then he'd have to reconsider. We didn't make this a hard decision for him. If he was out of the first few match squads in the stands behind Elanga and co he might have felt the need to leave.

It’s not baffling if you think about it rather than getting frustrated. Maybe he doesn’t like london as a permanent option? Maybe he doesn’t like WH as a permanent option? Maybe he’d hoped someone closer to home would come In for him so he doesn’t have to relocate his little sister, change her school and find new health clinics for his mum? After a year of depression (his own words) things are settled and he doesn’t want to rock the boat that much? Maybe he just fancies that he can get 10-20 chances of game time at United this season? After all we aren’t privy to what he’s been told, maybe he’s been told he’s on the bench and it’s up to him to show what he can do? Maybe the board told ole to keep him sweet so they can get him signed up again?

anyway I look at it, lingard is protecting himself; especially with the family he’s in

What suggests he will be happier? The fact that he went on loan for game time?

Or the fact that he wants assurances before signing a new contract?

his salary will be off the books if that’s how it goes. For a player that hasn’t played much and a lot of fans dobt want to see play much. I’m not sure how bad it will be for him or United.

what will be bad is if United can’t get Pogba to sign a new contract - in the team, at the peak of his powers and is an asset worth a lot of money (or was, he’s not now unless he signs)

You have to realise he went on loan to play himself back into form - for the benefit of United. Prior to that he had been in a dark place personally off the pitch for more than a year which meant he couldn’t focus on the pitch. He said so himself.

now he did what he and ole said he was going to do on that loan.

So what he plays himself into form then what? Back to the bench at United? What use is that really?

How many games will Lingard actually start?

I accept United are guilty of overpricing fringe players but in the instance of Jesse, what would you say was a fair price? I don’t think 25m was an unreasonable ask… maybe with room for a little negotiation over top line and payment terms.

Slime ball.

Should have been kicked out the door, even just to get his wages off the books.

Instead he will get paid another £5.2million for being an average footballer who plays few minutes.

All Lingard haters here - why don't you see the positive side of it? In a year's time, you will be rid of him.

What is a few millions for that happy happenstance? :)
