The MNF question: 10 minutes left in a game, pick anyone in history to win for you coming off the bench.

Question Gary was posed and he went with C.Ronaldo.

Perhaps a contrivance, or maybe what he genuinely thinks, who knows… other than it being MNF’s segway into another Messi vs. Ronaldo eternal conflict.

Who would you go with if posed the same question from anyone who has ever played the game? Before anyone asks, no further context was given than given in the header, so I guess it’s open to interpretation what type of team or service this player will get.

Ole.

If you're benching Cristiano fecking Ronaldo for the first 80 minutes you don't deserve to win the game.

It's a fair answer but it kinda depends if it's peak Ronaldo or the current one. He's still a beast but imagine the Man Utd / Real Madrid Ronaldo coming in with 10m to go against a team already tired. He was already causing havoc for 90 minutes, let alone full of energy with 10m to go.

I would probably answer the same tbh

Ronaldo scores you big goals in big moments. The greatest big game player in the history of the game IMO.

Yeah. I get how it’s impossible to chose a definitive GOAT player overall but as far as big game players go he is the absolute GOAT imo, no question.

I find if funny how Messi stats had 0 international trophies
Also wasn't Messi in the barca squad for 06? Didn't he play a part and should have 4 champions League ?

Oh, I wouldn't question his answer, but it may well have been mocked up to start a debate over a 'question' that was never really posed, which coincides with a certain C.Ronaldo being back in the PL... cynical of me to even think that? Possibly, but it's an easy tap-in for them to get the viewers talking and calling/messaging in etc.

There's a huge overlap with just 'best ever goalscorers in the game'.

Trying to pick someone more 'ten minutes'-friendly... maybe Ruud Van Nistelrooy? The man knew how to score every kind of goal and could do it as happily with his first touch of the game as his hundredth.

Ole of course, historically.

Off the bench to score and win the game? Has to be Ole doesn't it? That is literally what he built his career on.

I would like to say Ole or RVN.

But the truth is it is Giroud. Fecker always comes off the bench and scores.

Defoe according to the stats. He probably fits in that band of players not a starter for a top club.

Here's hoping Cavani is our super sub this season.

I would go with Oliver Bierhoff.

First and foremost, he has previous for coming off the bench and having a galvanising influence. The most notable example being the Euros 1996 final between Germany and Czech Republic. When Bierhoff came off the bench, Germany were trailing 1-0 with just 20 minutes to go. It only took him 3-4 minutes to get the equalizer. Talk about an instant impact! The game goes to extra time, and what happens? That's right, Bierhoff scores in extra time which proves to be the winner.

Secondly, its no secret that when teams are desperate for a goal, they tend to be more direct. One of the most direct strategies adopted in football is crosses. Well, when it comes to aerial presence he's one of the best in history as exemplified by:

Even till this day, he has the Serie A record of most goals from headers in a single campaign

Furthermore, we need to think about the mindset a player needs to be expected to make the difference. Remember, this will be when the crowd become restless. Or when your teammates start gesticulating. Confidence is paamount in football, and yet, in these latter stages where a players mental fortitude is challenged. Its this stage of the game where self-doubt creeps in, or players defer to bigger names to take that risk. Now I want to quickly pivot back to what I mentioned in the first paragraph, he scored both the equalizer and the winner. Different things were at stake at both stages of the goals right. With Germany trailing, the headspace being do not lose, but then the headspace following the equalizer lets go for the kill. Now to come back full circle, its important to emphasize that this was a player that was not only far removed from the starting berth, he wasn't even getting cameo appearances as far as the knockout rounds were concerned. Prior to his substitue appearance, he last featured in a group stage game. So for him to do what he did speaks volumes of his mental fortitude.
