There was Kante, Jorginho & Kovacic, with RLC staying, Saul acquisition seemed strange, unless the club though he would perform well & compete for a starting spot alongside Jorginho
Gilmour and Gallacher out on loan as well so cant see him being there next season

I still think Saul is a good player though - Chelsea wasnt the right move for him but can still see him being a success somewhere else ... newcastle will inevitably be linked I guess

Saul was brought in to be 4th choice.

RLC and Barkley were going to be shipped out because Tuchel didn't rate/didn't trust their fitness but the moves didn't happen and they've both subsequently impressed Tuchel in training/games.to the point that Saul is now 6th choice.

The loan made sense at the time as cover, given the number of games we're going to play. With a couple of injuries he could still play a big part in our season.

If Saul is you 6th choice you guys have it very good, our 1st choice are Fred and McT just saying.
Your squad is ridiculously deep.

In certain areas. Centre forward and goalie not quite such a deep bench!
Could see Chelsea strengthening with a CF in January - keeper id say that Kepa (72 million and playing for spain as recent as 2020) isnt a bad reserve keeper at all
strong squad - good manger - I think if anybody finishes ahead of Chelsea they win the league

Totally forgot about this transfer.

Imagine he was a United player. We never would hear the end of it.
I think the difference is the £40m transfer fee. Nobody would give a shit about VDB not playing if he was just on loan for the season.

If this was us, we would have agreed to sign him and had him keep Sancho and VDB on the bench for the next few seasons whilst he runs his contract down and we struggle to find a buyer to match our valuation. Minimum.

Football fans are usually not able to resist the temptation of judging a player in his first season. I hand learned to do that a while back.
There's struggling and there's struggling.

Unfortunately Saul is the latter, he looks completely out of his depth.

Yoinked off at half time for hiding throughout the first half. We had no control in the midfield because he never made himself available to the centre backs when we were playing out from the back. He's been awful and I hope we never have to see this guy in a Chelsea shirt again.

He seems to be in a mental shell right now. Didn't notice him at all in the first half and while RLC wasn't great either, including losing the ball for Watfords goal, atleast he was willing to come and take the ball. Saul wasn't doing that, sad to see for a player who was so highly rated at one time.

Huge disappointment isn't he. I thought a change of scenery might be big for him but evidently not.

Not sure how true the rumours of him not being a Tuchel signing are, but if they are that definitely won't help.

RLC was visibly playing better soon as he stopped having to babysit Saul.

He took some time off for mental health reasons a few years ago. He was dealing with depression I think. Not sure how much of that had to do with his form over the last 2 years.

Hiding, that sounds surprising. Don't know a lot about him to be honest but I can't see someone like Simeone tolerating a hider on the pitch.

Woah. Did not know that at all, hope he doesn't have similar issues at this time during his struggles. We take for granted the mental strength needed to play at the highest level consistently.

Simeone was phasing him out last season and he is completely surplus to requirements there now so it seems he did not tolerate it. In answer to what happened it can just be a mental issue affecting his confidence. I was recently reading about Stephen Hendry who dominated snooker in the nineties and he says that for some unknowable reason he stopped believing in himself and when that happened his game began to fall apart to the point where he retired because playing became torture. Saul was so good good a couple of years ago that it seems like something similar must be happening here.

I was reading a bit today about him and I actually think it's the other way; it's his form and confidence that is effecting his mental health.

Must be tough to go from a footballer in good form to someone who struggles to do crap all anymore; then having to think about 24/7 since it is your job and life.

He's been a disastrous signing. I know a number of United fans were complaining about not being in for him at the end of the window but looking at what he's offered Chelsea it appears he's finished.

As I said
Not good enough. Even when he had all the hype I didn't see much in him. We need a press resistant player who can dictate games and he isn't that player.

We never learn that judging a player in their first season at a new club and country isn’t the wisest thing to do. Sigh!

When you have Fred and Mctomminy as your main CM players, every player sounds better than those two.

They got him on loan mate. How is that a disaster? Hahahaha.

They can and will send him back.

At this rate and his current form, he will be going back to his beloved Elche soon on loan.

Yes the loan fee and wages are imaginary. They don't exist.

Ha ha ha ha.
Granted....but in the context of us spending 60m + on flops I don't think it's the big deal you're making out.

A few million in loan fee and wages these days is peanuts. Some signings work out and some don't.

There's a top player in him though. He's just lost his way badly.

It was worth the gamble but unfortunately he just looks so off the pace, and at the moment his stock is so low I'd rather give Lewis Baker a chance in midfield. His fundamentals aren't bad and in the build up he's decent at getting in position to receive the pass, but for some inexplicable reason he just dwells on the ball for an extra half second which leads to him getting dispossessed more often than not. It's actually a bit weird since he looks in control when he receives the pass, but just....doesn't release it in time.

Considering he's surplus to requirements at Atletico and this will be his only season at Chelsea I wonder where he'll head to next. My guess would be AC Milan.

Mctominay cost nothing and Fred was less than £60+ million.
