Letting players travel around the world for pointless games is risking covid related issues.

    I stand by this.

Why do you think other countries pro sports leagues like NHL have banned their players from going to the Olympics even though, it's in their playing contracts they can go, which has been ignored.

Risks are high everywhere United are short on defenders and we let one of our better ones go travelling.

Unless we are about to sign a Solid Defender this week, it's gonna be a big mistake.
Your original comment was ignorant, Cameroon has minimal Covid cases so why would Bailly be at an increased risk of catching Covid? And it’s not really in the nature of football clubs to ban their player from travelling for international duty, look at the discontent it’s causing at Watford. And since when was representing your team at a major international tournament ‘pointless’? More ignorance.

Isn't Bailly out with National team?

Also Bailly said he is not injured post game.
He was out and then recalled ahead of Burnley. I doubt they have sent him back so soon after just 1 match with our unstable defensive situation.

Why do you consider it pointless games. Are the Euros pointless games?

All of these competitions that involve travelling outside of your own country or bubble are pointless right now, especially when United have such few defenders to call, upon, in makes it even more ridiculous.

People getting their wish with Harry out, let’s see if our Phil can turn up tonight.

At £18 million per appearance Phil is more expensive than Harry so I expect him to get the same treatment from the fans here, ok lads!

I hope Jones has a worldclass performance today. He deserves it after all the sh*t he gets here.

The NHL players union made the decision not to go. Management couldn’t have stopped them if they’d wanted to.

Situations like this are probably why we’re reticent to let anyone go in January. Wouldn’t be surprised if nobody leaves tbh. Maybe Donny - who cares about that guy

We deserve a worldclass performance from Jones more like.

Tonight is like me turning up to work after being paid to stay home for years, my colleagues would be expecting big things to say the least

Only joking, I love Phil, one of the few who won the league here. Though I fear I might be saying that whilst he's still on the payroll in 2030 ...

Yeah I said this in other threads where you have people saying we should be letting 5-6 players leave with no mention of who we should be getting to replace them.

You trim the fat in the summer, not in January mid-season when you can't get decent replacements and you need to rely on some good rotation.

Yeah just dig in. If it was participation in a competition you value (euros/world cup/CL) you wouldn't use that terminology, you would express it better.
But its just the afcon, so of course its pointless games.

I think Bailly is available, but if he's not, the answer is never Phil Jones, not because he is terrible, just because he is the past.

We have to get out of the habit of hanging onto players like Jones and Mata for that "just in case" scenario. That's £250K per week in wages, or £13m per annum. We have Menghi and other lads in the Academy who we should be able to trust to play one game against Wolves after spending last season on loan in the Championship

But that again is another good point, why do the PFA not step in on this.

Because they have no real power compared to the Amercian Player agencies.

Also, the players are not happy about not playing in China and the decision not to allow them was the NHL not the PA as you will see if you read the comments from Brad Marchand this week.

The PA reluctantly accepted The NHL decision to not honor the contracted agreement (keeping it short here).

They could play it another time, it's difficult but not impossible.

    Health and safety more important.

Already they have cancelled warm up games because squads are full of covid in the last couple of days.

It's just madness and it's all about money

Why would the PFA look to block African players from playing a major tournament for their country?

The only thing that is still messed up is that the international FIFA calendar is still structured to the benefit of largely white, Western European nations. We could quite easily play a number of our international weeks back-to-back at the same time as AFCON so everyone is just playing international football then.

Would be nice if a young CB could play alongside Varane but don't think the club are in a position to experiment

I find it frustrating that the AFCON issues are being boiled down to race. If the Euros were in January nobody would be happy either.

It’s obviously a much bigger issue as more African players are in our league now than previously.

That’s a great solution! Make it the January transfer window as well so that squads can be sorted before resuming games.

    Gaz. Is a Mewling Quim.
Yes, if the countries have banned travelling and are not in control of the virus.

Everything is about money, not player health or safety.
So how about travelling to Cameroon, who haven’t banned travelling and have a very good grasp (99 daily new cases on the 7 day average!) on the virus?

Certainly sounds safer than the UK is right now to me.

Agree , if he plays tonight every real Utd fan will get behind him 100%. Through no fault of his own he has been through hell and back with injuries and does not deserve all the ridicule he gets.

Surely we will just play Varane and Bailly? If Bailly is injured, then Matic will come in at CB

It is down to race. The Euros wont be in January because UEFA is not going to play it in January. To me the only issue of AFCON is that they do not play in every 4 years but every two years. The African countries have every right to expect that their best players are available to play for their countries so they may win something.
