Another show I've had the opportunity to watch during the lockdown.
It's a TV show whose first season aired on HBO last year, and has already been renewed for a second season.
It's a teen show that focuses on a group of high school kids and their struggles - sex and sexuality as a whole, drugs, alcohol, dysfunctional families, etc. It's pretty explicit in depicting the themes it addresses, but does so pretty intelligently, focusing for the large part on the female characters.
The ensemble cast is excellent - Zendaya plays Rue, the "main" character, and gives a wonderful subdued performance, hitting all the right emotional notes, and letting loose on a few occasions like in the finale. It could've been easy, given Rue's story (she's a recovering drug addict who comes out of rehab in the 1st episode) to overact and make a meal out of certain situations, but she mostly keeps it simple and delivers an overall superb performance, full of emotion, doubt and humour. She's a fine young actress, and one to follow (I think she'll be in Villeneuve's Dune). The rest of the cast is great and manages to convey all the growing pains of that age group.
It's not perfect, some of the writing is at times clunky (though it's more an exception than the rule), and some of the arcs are pretty dark (without spoiling it, I felt Nate's, at times, was a bit of a stretch), but it makes up for that in how much it cares for its characters and the themes it deals with. It's also a visual feast throughout, and has a great soundtrack to boot.
I was hooked from early on and will definitely be checking out season 2 when it comes out.
