ETH can give his targets. Its up to the club to work out a deal/ decide to move on to another option.
Eh I can see not wanting to question the new manager, I certainly don't, I still back him obviously, think he's the right man, very excited for the season and future. But doesn't change my belief that the club wouldn't still be intent on signing him if it wasn't for Ten Hag, he'll be the reason we haven't moved on (that and the fact we'll truly believe we can sign him).

If we have truly wasted 13 odd weeks trying to get a player that we didn’t get assurances from that he actually wanted to come here then this isn’t changed at all. Still the same old sh*t.

Whose house are a protesting outside of this time?
I mean, I could be that they did have assurances the player was open to joining. But that Chelsea came in and was a more attractive destination. it could be that De Jong was holding out to see if another more desirable option came in.

Just have to see where it all goes now.

I'm starting to believe the club walked out a while ago and is letting the window play out being relaxed and all like usual. They will start panicking after a couple of bad results this month and overpay for a couple of players like Sesko and Neves.

He'll go to Chelsea I reckon. I don't buy this 17m rubbish as much as others tbh. I think it was posturing on his end to see who else would be interested, assuming he can't stay at Barca.

Simply put, if he wanted to be here, he would have been here by now.

Be it to us or to Chelsea or any other club for that matter, the one thing that we are sure about is that De Jong won't leave Barcelona until his deferred wages issue is settled, once that is settled with Barca (meaning Barca will have to pay him a number that is acceptable to De Jong), then we will know where De Jong would go, and another thing is that Chelsea and Barca are yet to agree a fee here, let's wait and see how much Chelsea will be willing to pay to Barcelona.
Chelsea will make sure either Barcelona or FDJ are well compensated. They wouldn't get involved if they didn't know what they have to do.

This goose is cooked.

We'd have released a classic brief if we'd walked away awhile ago.

Confirmation that Chelsea are deffo in for him then. Would be amazed if he picked us over CL football and living in London. Their new owner will want to make a statement and I can’t see the money owed to Frenkie being a problem he won’t sort out.

We’ve fecked this summer transfer up beyond belief what a nightmare.

Bizarre that people are taking such delight at the deal seemingly being in jeapordy
Weirdos. Although I don't think much changes here even if the Chelsea interest is genuine, unless they're prepared to help Barcelona write off those deferred wages.

There's still a whole month of transfer window to go yet and almost all reports are saying that we want 5 players in.

Agreed. I think Frenkie and his agent have been waiting for a CL club to come in for him. He has strung United on incase another CL club doesn't come for him. I cant see us getting him over Chelsea.

Based on what? That is sounds good to you?

How does playing Champions League football make you change your stance on missing out on money? Barcelona play Champions League football. If he stays he gets his money and Champions League football.

He’s not going nowhere without his money bro. He’s made that pretty clear and I’m sure he will stick it out.

If Chelsea decide to pay him his money plus having Champions League football.. then I agree I’m sure he’ll be up for that.
You may well be right, I just thought you were weirdly assertive in your response to another poster. It just wouldn't shock me if he's willing to settle for a lower deal from Barcelona if he gets to go to somewhere more attractive than we currently are to him.

Yup, will end up at Chelsea.

Question now is, should we go after neves or tielamans?

How much are the deferred wages? It has been said that Chelsea want Barca to finalise talks for Azpi this week at the latest. We are also looking to sign a new left back imminently in Cucurella, which could suggest Alonso is leaving shortly, who Barca also want. Those two will possibly be used to mitigate some of the deferred wages perhaps?

Quite shocked by the news tbh, especially coming from Orny.

First and foremost, I still think we'll sign him, but in the event we don't, Ten Hag deserves a huge percentage of the blame. We're clearly going for his targets, and it'll be his choice we've given up the entire summer to get him.
Sure, but how much will there actually be to blame anyone for?

By which I mean say Neves is our second choice target and we end up signing him. How much have we actually lost out in that scenario versus moving on from FDJ earlier and signing Neves?

As long as it doesn't actually cost us signings we would have otherwise made there's not that much lost bar maybe signing Neves a few weeks earlier, though it wouldn't have been overly surprising if that dragged out until near deadline in either case.

Without knowing what we've lost out on in a concrete way yet it it'd look and feel bad more than anything else, not securing our obvious main summer target. But in real terms the lack of spending on other positions so far is a much bigger issue.

Regardless of Champions League, De Jong still has to consider whether joining Chelsea with Jorginho, Kante and Kovacic is a better option than joining Utd with Fred and McTominay. Being a key player for us must surely have some appeal over competing for minutes. He only needs to look at Saul last season to see how it could go for him there.

Chelsea
Raphinha
Richarlison
Gabriel Jesus
Kounde
Ake
Kimpembe

I’m sure there’s more. Some of these players had fee’s agreed. Whilst they were clearly interested in going other places. I think we need to admit Chelsea are being taken for a ride this window.

Yes they will get good players in but I mean if it’s Brighton or Chelsea regardless of how amateur they are behaving you will want to move.
Kounde, Raphinha, and Kimpembe I'll give you. The first two ended up going to Barca and Kimpembe decided to stay at PSG after having a talk with the new manager. Was a lot of media talk about PSG being after Skriniar and had that happened maybe Kimpembe would've left but perhaps he was promised a big role in the future too, who knows? As for the others:

- Chelsea were never in for Gabriel Jesus.

- After missing out on Raphinha, the club made an enquiry for Richarlison only to find out he had already given his word to Spurs about signing for them. No offer was ever made.

- Ake was passed on because of City's asking price. Player was more than willing to join and personal terms were agreed.

That said, I don't think Chelsea will get De Jong. There's not a huge need for him at the moment, maybe next summer there will be but I'd rather the club try to get Rice.

I just can't get my head around the logic used by us here on this transfer, because it genuinely seems we've put all our eggs in the basket of hoping barca force him to leave and us being the only club that wants him.

I don’t understand the “if he goes to Chelsea I’ll laugh my head off” type comments

Doesn't it kind of dilute the comedy a bit when it happens every transfer window for 10 years.

If anything it would be funnier if United pulled it off surely

Yeah how those two players fit into the equation will also be key

Ok. Now we panic
I'm really disappointed. All of that promise and this is how it all ends. I'm too sad to even insert the obligatory Cina's Mum joke at the end of this post.

In some ways it might be better not to get this transfer.

Firstly, he really isn't the player fans think he is, so there could be disappointment. Fans seem to think he is pirlo. Same happened to van de beek, who is a second striker who fans just believed would be a champions League level deep lying playmaker. They turned on him when he wasn't.

Secondly, and most importantly, it would take the pressure right off ETH this season. Fans are already saying 7th or 8th would be an acceptable finish. Large signings tend to raise expectations. In reality if the squad is going to finish 7th, FDJ isn't going to push it to fourth.

Yep

A sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, the club will dither and not act decisively, and the other big clubs will improve while we stagnate.

Say goodbye to the last blundering idiot running our transfer activity and hello to the new blundering idiot running our transfer activity.

Joke of a club.

When did it happen before? Mikel and Hazard, ten years ago?

€17m apparently, and it was reported Barcelona have offered him €7m of that.

Signing Neves when we'd been after De Jong all summer would be crushing, its a massive loss and a huge downgrade. I'd be beyond gutted.
Reminiscent of chasing Thiago/Fabregas and getting Fellaini. Not that extreme, but still.

This is just funny. Serves us right for seemingly fecking around.
We did our part in reaching the deal with barca. I'm annoyed at us waiting for FDJ and not moving on.

I had a feeling Chelsea would move in for him. He’s been linked multiple times. You’ll probably get the deal done by weekend whilst United have been fecking about for 3 months.
