Pretty sure we're not going from de Jong to Rabiot. Would be a bit stupid if so
Manchester United, one of the footballing superpowers with one of the greatest histories...

Under the Glazers WOULD do that yes.

Something called tax. I suspect it would be done as a last resort but you have to pay more than what is owed

Also I believe there is a limit on how much sign on fee can be relative to transfer etc. I also suspect he would actually get a real sign on fee too
Where have you made this up from now? Absolutely nothing restricting a sign on fee based on the transfer fee. Otherwise free agents get zero sign on fee right?

At this point I'm just focusing on this thread more than the others not because I think we'll get him, but because of all the drama. I feel like I'm watching a soap.

Same here. If he’s a backup then fine but I would have more confidence of this if Frenkie had already signed.
FDJ isn't coming, the club have started to realise that. There was always a chance until Chelsea upped their interest.

He'll stay at Barcelona or join Chelsea as the new owner's statement signing.

Pretty sure if we were cooling interest we'd have our own journos reporting it and not one of Chelseas. The only time we'd back out is when it's totally obvious that we won't get him

Nonsense. I refuse to accept this. Frenkie sign United. Go Red Devils and Frenkie. Brain beginning Muppet Reset.

Look, we’ll all be laughing at this thread at the end of the transfer window, and wondering why we were panicking so much, just in time to see FDJ play his first game for United...

The hope that’s keeping me going on this saga is that there’s no way even Manchester United would have stayed in for Frenkie this long unless management had been told in confidence that Frenkie was open to the move but wanted to get the deferred wages sorted out first.

There's more chance of you actually being a pigeon.

We the fans deserve what is happening to us. A majority of the fans are still pining for the old days of SAF. Blind devotion to anything the manager says and demands. If those are not met, the majority of the fanbase assumes the manager isn't backed. It's ridiculous that 40.7% believe that we should hang in there till ETH says. It utter stupidity. PL is getting more and more competitive these days and all our rivals have strengthened, signed players much earlier and are ready for this season. Here we are still pining after a midfielder who clearly has no intention of coming without his 17m or has no intention of ever playing for us. Instead of asking ETH to pick another target much earlier and integrate him the team, we have wasted the entire preseason and are looking like absolute fecking idiots. Pathetic.
Its not like we not calling him you know, the cun* had is all blocked.

When the Sesko links came in, reports came that we are no longer in for Antony. When the Arnautovic links came in reports came Sesko signed with Leipzig. We've got the Rabiot links now. Only a matter of time.....

What makes you think that they are starting to realise that after three months? So either FDJ took us for a ride or we were complety stupid?

Are you suggesting this has not happened before?

So they’re asking to him to annul his contract, then sign a new one after?

What’s to stop him telling them to get fecked and sign for someone one a free in between those steps?

Is there?
Rabiot has been on the transfer list all summer. If we wanted him in addition to FDJ, we could have signed him for our pre-season tour. I think if we sign Rabiot, we won't have fully given up on FDJ, but seems there is a realisation we better get somebody in as our chances of getting FDJ are slimming.

I cant see any scenario where Barca can take action against fdJ. He simply gets told what he will earn, what his bonuses are and clauses, and signs, if he agrees. All the intricacies are down to lawyers, agent and board, they're the ones who'd be fecked if there is some illegal part to it. surely?

He'll just refuse to go back to his old deal.
I am not a lawyer licensed to practice law in Spain, but assuming the new Barca board is saying there are some elements in the contracts (through misrepresentation, fraud, etc.) which would render the contract void because of illegality. This is a pretty common legal basis to do so, in a lot of different jurisdictions. The new board will basically sue the old board and get the court to declare this illegality. This means that FDJ may be a “victim” too. Will have to see what the filing actually says. Putting aside all of the legal technicalities, it’s still an a-hole move by the club. It just shows they are willing to throw a player who they say is important under the bus if it suits them. I can’t really buy the notion that FDJ loves the club so much that despite this he would still want to stay.

I agree. I could live with Rabiot if we get Frenkie. If he's an alternative to him we are fecked.
If we wanted Rabiot, he was available all summer. This very much looks like an alternative now that most other available midfielders have been picked up while we were begging foe FDJ to pick us.

The fact is Barcelona do not want to pay up, but in the end they will likey have to.

Also another club paying it has been explored and deemed to he potentially illegal
I have seen this a few times now but where are people getting this from?

I haven't seen a rule or law that specifically forbids this. Even Ornstein in his latest tweet said Chelsea are willing to pay Frenkie's deferred wages. Doubt he would write that openly like that if it was illegal. Or did he just tell the world Chelsea are willing to break the law to sign him?

But for arguments sake even if you weren't allowed to directly pay his deferred wages, what is stopping another club paying him 450k a week instead of 350k and spread it over the length of his contract? Or give him as a one off signing bonus? How would the authorities proof this extra money was indeed for the deferred wages?

I am really interested to know how it could be enforced

This is incredibly naive. Your whole argument seems to hinge on 'they'll be fine because they're Barcelona', which isn't even an argument. I'm not complaining about value in the market, I'm complaining about a club spending well beyond their means for instant gratification ahead of long term sustainability. Also, finishing a sentence with 'Period' doesn't make your argument any more compelling.
The fact you are getting annoyed at Barcelona selling their own assets off they created is a bit naive.

Especially when you have Man City openly cheating in the same division as us doing far worse things than Barcelona have ever done.

Man City, Chelsea, Newcastle and PSG are the problems in this sport right now. Barcelona actually deserve their money as it’s actually their assets.

Last time I checked they’d been the most dominant club on the planet for basically the past 20 years.

That and the fact he HAS to leave Barca. I know he technically can stay but I don’t see that being allowed because of how it would screw Barca. They will force him out and we are the only team to have a bid accepted so far. He’s got to come to us, right?!

A lot of the remaining hope for this transfer seems to boil down to basically "Surely we can't be that incompetent that we would still be pursuing this when it seems to be dead" and honestly that really comes down to putting a lot of faith in this club
