Where the grass is greener.
But Rabiot is so far down on the list of available midfielders moving this summer, I mean he's been on the transfer list for 15m quid since early June. Going from FdJ to Rabiot is such a shocking drop in quality it can't be true.
This is what I’m struggling with. How can there not be more in between targets? I thought Neves was a bad back up, but in comparison, Rabiot takes the piss really. It’s all very strange.

We've been doing that for ages to be fair, we just don't get the ones we do need instead.
Historically, yes. De Jong would've been the first big money for a while where you could see exactly where he'd fit in though.

Yeh let's ignore we were one of the biggest most attractive club at the time with CL football

I didn't read your point after the first sentence because it's slaps with in denial of where we at right now with an inept board. Forget the past
Are you suggesting we should not patiently seek out world class players if they have told our senior management that there is interest / a chance?

Regardless, the point I was making (if you would be so kind as to read the post, it may have been clear) is that there are situations where we have signed players after the start of the season. This is nothing out of the ordinary for any club in the world.

We should then try to get Kante or Kovačič.
If ETH wants a Midfielder who can carry ball forward then Kovacic has that ability. Drives forward with ball. Good player and doesn't seem to be a starter at Chelsea.

Barca has to have their players registered by Friday. Two more days of this saga for everyone.
I’m not convinced even 2 more days will bring an end to this saga. I won’t be surprised if Barca are able to register every player including FDJ but still try to sell him all the way till the window closes.

Anyone find it strange how City and Liverpool are so quiet in this race for De Jong, btw? He’s the ideal Pep player and with talk of Bernardo wanting to go to Barca so badly, why don’t they just make a swap work? I could see that happening out of nowhere this window.

And with Liverpool, they’ve just lost Thiago for an extended period, he gets injured all the time, Henderson is like 35, and Keita is also injured and injury prone. I could see them sneaking in under the radar as well.

It would be very unlikely for chelsea to sell us a player when we would be a potential direct rival for top 4. Certainly not when they know it would strengthen our weakest area.

But I agree Kovacic would walk into our team. In fact most of Chelsea’s midfielders would.

I dont buy these De Jong to Chelsea rumours at all. Especially when having Kante, Kovacic and Jorghino already. By all accounts they’re preparing a third £70m bid for Fofana now. Can’t see them spunk out €250mill on Sterling, Cucurella, De Jong and Fofana in one window.

Remember they havent sold Lukaku. Sure, they got €30m for Werner. But they Will have to spend over €200m net to get all these transfers.

He is going to Chelsea, it is quite obvious for a week or two now.

People need to remember their new owner is out there spending big and wanting to make a statement in his first summer. 80m more or less is nothing for him.

Would've happened already by now, those clubs don't mess about.

Not until deadline day no, for me that'd be so stupid. I'm more than willing to go for world class players but up until a realistic timeframe that allows us to get decent alternatives

You also have to remember, if we want quality alternative, most clubs won't sell their quality players last minute without getting replacements themselves

By the way, in the past we may have bought quality deadline day buys, but our team were so good that isn't as essential as this midfield we need to improve.

I know laporta has blabbered on about FdJ but I would love to hear some solid words from our camp soon. Even if it was we chased hard but we were unsuccessful. the whole thing is mental torture being completely in the dark whether we are coming or going. I know for obvious reasons this doesnt happen this way but it feels like desperate times. Equally I would really love to hear a bit of FDJs side. Does he want to leave or not? Is MUFC a club he sees himself at or is our decline a step too far away from him achieving his goals etc....just something othe than whispers

Kovacic is the starter. The team has learned that if he has a small injury, it is best to rest him. Some players can play through little nicks, he is not one of them. It only gets worse. Given a little rest he recovers well.

Im the touchy idiot? Says the moron blaming the manager for feck all. You plastics are just the worst. Bellend.
Hahahah you've lost the plot. Ten Hag targeting Arnautovic and de Jong is concerning, don't be so delusional. Go and buy a new top in the megastore. Rattled by an Internet forum.

City - FDJ is best when he plays in Rodri’s position. He’s just not at the level to play in the advanced positions where Bernardo plays. He can do a job there but not a player you’d spend 80m on to play there. It would be like playing Jorginho in that advanced position. So I don’t see city going for him as he wouldn’t fit rodri and de Jong in the same team.

Liverpool - After their outlay on Nunez this summer I can’t see them spending that much as much as they would probably love to.

I mean. I've committed to staying until the end now, so i'd be an idiot if I said he wasn't coming here...

So i'll not say anything. Done deal.

Thank goodness we still have three weeks to go. Even two weeks is enough time to make a deal work. The risk/reward of being patient is there, for sure, but if the reward is worth the risk, the risk is taken. I think this was a calculated risk and I think it was a reasonable one.

I will say, again, that I don't necessarily agree with the alternatives being scouted. But our pursuit of Frenkie, I feel, was entirely reasonable and well managed.

Liverpool don’t have 80m and the salary to pay for Frenkie. Nunez was their big transfer. They’ll probably go big for Bellingham or someone like that next summer. And I guess Pep just isn’t the biggest fan.

The points you raised have been discussed many times in this thread.

None of them are reasons for chelsea not to go for FDJ.

This would put the final nail in the coffin of the oft-repeated view that "a lack of UCL football doesn't really matter to top players".

It may once have been at least partially true, when United could reassure prospective transfers that a season outside the UCL was an anomaly, but we now regularly miss out on qualifying for the competition and players know that if they sign for us on a six year deal, they'll probably spend three of those years outside the competition.

He’s probably our best midfielder currently. Definitely a starter if he’s fully fit. Which I don’t think he is right now after picking up a small knock in preseason.

As I said, Liverpool may not have been thinking about a midfielder until now with their injuries. And City probably had no intention of selling Bernardo but if he pushes to go they will need another top class player to come in.

It's probably his wages, if he wants 350-400k a week they wont pay it

If Chelsea do sign FDJ do you think Gallagher would be made available?

Surely there's nobody on here still clinging on to hope that we'd get FDJ?
I let this one go some time ago but I imagine some may be clinging onto the fact Ornstein and United's most reliable journos haven't said United are giving up. Our moves indicate we may be moving on but seems more the Spanish and Chelsea sources pushing the agenda.
