I've been away from the Caf for a while but I'm back to talk about Irish music and then probably disappear again.

Dublin's CMAT (Ciara Mary Alice Thompson) is the future queen of pop. Debut album went straight in at #1 in Ireland. Queues were out the door and down the street for her two gigs at The Great Escape in Brighton at the weekend. Likewise for her SXSW shows in Austin in March. Only a matter of time before she really breaks the UK.

The Scratch are a four-piece trad metal group. Former members of a number of metal bands around Dublin came together with some acoustic guitars at a Rory Gallagher festival to do some busking. It went well. They've already sold out the Olympia Theatre in Dublin twice and have a solid UK tour under their belts. They're never going to be mainstream but they also never fail to get a crowd going live. Highly recommended.

The Mary Wallopers (also in a completely different style of band called TPM) started playing old traditional songs when they discovered that their local pub would give them free pints if they came down to play a few tunes. A few years later, they've sold out several Vicar Street shows. Gas lads.

Sprints. Another from the post-punk explosion, but their frontwoman Karla Chubb separates them from the masses. Unreal energy.

John Francis Flynn. Dubliner who recently won a few prestigious folk awards for this beaut of an album

Yes! Saw John in Whelan's back in November. An absolute giant of a man.

I'm a big fan of Columbia Mills and wish they'd get more recognition.

And yeah love The Scratch!
They always seem like a band just on the precipice. They're just missing that one song to propel them forward.

They're cousins of my brothers girlfriend. She's been playing the TPM stuff anytime we've been round there's for a good while but the trad is fantastic. I saw them at Vicars street there recently. They're brilliant and yeah they're gas crack.

Deadly. I heard that Pull your jocks up before and promptly forgot all about it. I'll be keeping an eye out for gigs.

Absolutely. The Young People is one of the best Irish songs of the 21st century. And that version of Wild Rover. Incredible.

100% agree with you,

The young people was released around the time a friend of mine committed suicide by hanging.
The lyrics resonated with me massively.

Stunning musicianship throughout,, and Radie Peat is incredible!! :D

Kynsy is also excellent. Have seen her live a few times recently and she's smashed it every time.

My Dad was Irish and growing up I distinctly remember this song being played a lot. I can't remember if he actually liked F&A or people just bought him this sh*t because he was Irish but I know he liked this one. Here you go Dad, if you're up there on your iPad.

Off to see Pillow Queens next week. Can't wait. Liffey is one of the best Irish songs of the decade so far.

I have no idea either, yet.
Good thread, although so much of it just leaves me cold. I've seen Denise Chalia a few times and there's nothing there for me. I like what The Scratch are attempting but it's a very thin line to the Saw Doctors.

C-H-A-I-L-A, sound the words out. ;)

I think her first two singles are still her best. She's definitely a case of the person being so impressive that it elevates her art in people's eyes. I've seen her live twice this year and not been overly impressed but she herself is an absolute powerhouse.

@Zebs

My youngest just introduced me to Biig Piig. Shouldn’t she be on your list? She’s good.
Absolutely, i've seen her 3 or 4 times. She's got two shows in The Soundhouse soon but she absolutely should be playing Olympia Theatre at the very least.

Sorry, that was lazy typing.

100%, on her as a force of personality, I've met her a few times in more widely known company than herself and she's got amazing presence.
