So lots of noise around this with suggestions that the Premier League have panicked and dropped their guts on City to get ahead of the curve.

Can anyone shed any light around what this will likely entail? It seems like it’s going to be almost entirely focused on ownership, governance and the protection of fan interests.

Is there any hope whatsoever that there might be recommendations about regulating the currently closed shop of professional refereeing and providing some transparency in a profession which has so much power in the professional game and zero accountability?

Anyone appointed by this government will be friendly to corporate interests. I don’t want them anywhere near anything.

Every single thing that they touch, is corrupt. All of it.

Honestly don’t think it’s worth discussing in any meaningful manner under the Tories. They’ll almost certainly create a system that empowers corruption more than it restricts it.

Do you trust this government to do anything with a degree of competence or for the interests of the people?

Golden share for fans maybe?

Ultimately Boehly and Clear Lake are right. The premier league needs to be like the NFL and be a closed shop.

Football system was founded in 19th century and now in 21st time for reform.

Given how close the Sun is to the Conservatives, this is likely to be a good summary of what we can expect.

Agreed, well said.

"Dropped their guts on" is a horrible phrase.
Great innit.

Closed shop as in no relegation? It may as well be like that already given how it gets rewarded.

Yeah it might as well be like that considering there is 20 positions in the league table and since the inception of the premier league there’s only been *checks notes* fifty teams that have competed in the league, of which a grand total of *checks notes* six have never been relegated.

You can't have a salary cap without it being a closed shop, because to be a profitable league, you need the big names in the league, to sell it. The cap gives a decent chance for any club to be relegated. You need the cap and some kind of rebalancing system, so clubs can actually make a profit, not lose £100m+ a year to be at the top. You also need it because in the long run, leagues dominated by a single or a few teams become dull. TV revenue drops and it all financially implodes.

Football system at the moment is a financially unsustainable shambles. Which is probably why owners are trying to sell. My guess is a lot of clubs are going to massively struggle in the incoming downturn.

But I wasn't talking about "since the inception" I was talking about recent years.

Three years in a row now two recent PL teams have hogged the automatic promotion places. They can basically live off parachute payments and overwhelm the middle clubs. The best the rest can hope for is fluking it through the play offs.

Barring facing lesser teams for a year or so there's simply no consequences for relegation from the top flight anymore.

Given how close the Sun is to the Tories, this is probably a puff piece that makes it seem like it'll be good for fans but in reality it'll be good for their party donors.

Conspiracy time but an "independent body" picked by this government would take bribes from the City owners to make all of the charges magically disappear.

Definitely looks like it. The timing is too coincidental. PL saying "Oh no, we CAN regulate ourselves leave us alone."

The notion of the government coming in and making anything better is worrying in itself. If anything, they’d make the crookery watertight.

I had no idea, please accept apologies from the heart of my bottom. I am horrified and have also reported myself. I will now surrender my Caf account and flush my smartphone down the nearest convenience.

You can't have a salary cap in just one league, if the PL had one, all the top players would move elsewhere eventually or never arrive in the first place

It works in the US because who else really plays baseball or American football, they have the draft system that acts as a balancing tool and stops domination over anything more than 2-3 seasons

Looks like the PL Panicked! :( It's an easy case for the City lawyer to have this moved to the "national independent inquiry", i.e. the Tory party hungry mongrels. Through the UK court of law since the PL exists within UK jurisdiction.

See, City have been proven innocent again. For the second time running. Just for a nominal £20 million donation. I mean fine.

Yep, seems good news for anyone who wants the Glazers out

When is this meant to come into play again? As the sale of the club would obviously want to be going through before then to avoid complications

Does it talk about using pl money to help fund clubs’ stadium developments? IIRC that was proposed by a few originally and would be great for us.

Forcing the majority to pay for a new glass mansion for the very richest in society (us) sounds like the most Tory thing in the world, so yeah we’re probably in with a shot.

What can the PL realistically do if a group of clubs does say feck this we're off?

What is going to prevent them.
They can fine and sue. Why government is getting involved in private sector companies setting up a rival competition is beyond me. Won't end well.

Football isn't 'fan' led otherwise something would be done about the extortionate prices you pay to watch a handful of matches on TV or at grounds.
