In the wicked horror series based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, ruthless siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege and power, but past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth.

Flanagan

Ready to be spooked.

The last series, that midnight club thing was pretty poor. Hopefully this returns to his heights.
This and MC were filmed very close together, maybe even overlapped. That's my concern with this one

Was it bad or was it a show for teenagers?
I didn't stick with it very long but it didn't necessarily feel bad

100% agree. I gave up and didn’t finish it,

up to then he was basically flawless with his TV shows. Midnight mass is my favourite but loved the other two he did as well (Bly Manor and Haunted Hill house)

edit: His movies that I’ve seen are a mixed bag. I really liked Geralds Game and his Ouija movie. But the one I really should have liked, Dr. Sleep didn’t do it for me at all

I watched the first episode and it was really good, I've heard a few reviews it's a bit of a mixed bag after that, though. Still intriguing.

Midnight Mass is a brilliant show and even though I don't think Hill House is as good as some people do, it's still great, so I'm sure I'll enjoy this.

Also how the hell is Carla Gugino 52

3 eps in. Decent but the random jump scares don't really work and are more annoying than anything.

We watched two episodes last night. And I'm not sold. It's mainly relying on a few jump scares and it all seems a bit Glass Onion-y.

I'll watch it but I'm not expecting it to be anywhere near Hill House or Bly Manor. his last show was insultingly bad so it shouldn't be difficult to improve on that at least.

Yeah the more I watch this the shittier it gets. I'm 5 eps in and losing interest badly. This is why I prefer films to shows. If it's shit, it only wastes about a couple of hours whereas I need to sit through 8 eps of this as I always like at least getting to the end of a season.

The episodes are way too fecking long. It’s not the sort of show I want to sit through over an hour of at a time. So much random filler.

Yeah... The main guy telling the story... If I were the guy listening to that story and the way he tells it, I swear I would knock him out cold, steal that expensive alcohol and get the feck out of there.

He just meanders and stalls, I'm there shouting "get to the fecking point you old fart!"

I don’t understand it. Didn’t they only have one son when they made the deal?

Loved Hill House and Midnight Mass

Absolutely hated Bly Manor and Midnight Club.

So will see if this is hit or miss

I've warmed to it a little bit. Although it's still to reliant on jump scares. I only realised each episode was loosely based on a different Edgar Allan Poe work after watching the Victorine episode.

It’s somewhere in the middle for me.

I just think the episodes are too long and full of annoying melodrama at times. But overall it is fun.

The deal was for every generation, so essentially the entire bloodline. So basically he was a bit of a cnut for having more kids after the deal (although I think he had two kids when he made the deal anyway)

Midnight Mass

I've just binged Midnight Mass again in preparation for this whilst ill and it really isn't as good as I remember. In fact it actually ages worse than the first two. I think the setting and the subject start well, but there's a whole load of boring nonsense and some awful acting. Linklater's performance carries it hard, his character should have been stronger at the end too.

Hill House is still my favourite for the story, but I do have a huge soft spot for Bly Manor as the theme underneath it/setting, and especially the ending just hit something.

Midnight Club is awful after the first 2 episodes. Clearly angling for a series was that one.

This has started out ok, but the second episode was just so very predictable and dull. If it wasn't for Carla Gugino showing up like that, I'd have lost all interest. It is somewhat reminding me of that terrible third part of the recent Dracula show, trying to be something modern but written by someone who really isn't and can't quite catch the lightning again.

Editing my own posts.
I liked it. Kinda. It’s very hit & miss but that’s fine as it’s basically really an anthology of other Poe stories squeezed under the umbrella of an elaborated House of Usher adaptation. It’s quite smartly done as that, but a bit wobbly if viewed strictly as a serialized thing. Rue Morgue, Telltale Heart & The Raven were good I thought. The Cat & Goldbug ones were a bit shit.

the only thing that consistently didn’t work for me was that the younger & older versions of the Ushers seemed nothing alike. Particularly the main guy from Midnight Mass as the young Roderick…. But then I looked it up and saw that Bruce Greenwood was only cast as the older version well into filming after Frank Langella was fired, so he was essentially cast to play the younger version of a completely different actor… so, that might explain it I guess?

Flanagan is an atmosphere guy though really. All his shows go a bit squirrely and indulgent. He’s got vibes though

It's kind of a mess but it's also Flanagan's most experimental and bold work so far I think. If we're ranking it I'd place it third behind Midnight Mass and Hill House.
