The goals scored/conceded stats are very interesting I think.

6 more goals scored!
and five more conceded

5 good wins on the bounce. If only we hadn't lost the Burnley match.
Even with that one defeat, I'd say that our start to this season has been outstanding. I'm surprised to see that our goals scored has increased compared to similar fixtures from last season. We aren't missing Ronaldo as much as many thought we would.

I didn't think we conceded so many goals comparing to last season, however, it may be only because match with City and I'm sure that we'll make it the same as last season after match with Hull. Just don't think we'll lose three goals at Old Trafford against them.

Good idea for a thread, Merman.

That's better start of the season than in 2006/07, which is in many fans' opinion our best in last decade.

You could say that, but if we'd won at Burnley we may have slipped in other games like City or Spurs. I think it made us concentrate a lot more, and at least we didn't give points to rivals.

The fact that our good run of form has coincided with tricky fixtures means that the results comparison is useful IMO.

If this "form" had coincided with us tonking Hull, Wolves and Pompey at home then I wouldn't read too much into it. The fact that we've beaten Spurs and Stoke away from home and Arsenal at Old Trafford means that our run of form is that little bit more impressive.

We beat teams with 100% records in three consecutive premier league games, so its a very impressive run IMO.

The depth of the squad is good, the mixture of youth and experience is perfect and we have a genius running the show. All those doom and gloomers in the media predicting our downfall because two players left will look like fools by the end of the season.

Those people have just shut up, but I'm sure thely'll come back when we draw or lose against mid-table team (eg. something like Burnley) saying once again "you're only a poor team without Ronaldo"

Sure, we have come out of a tough run of 4 games with maximum points, which is great.

But its not always that meaningful when you compare a group of fixtures from different seasons. Last year we were poor against the other members of the top 4 (7 points from 18), the season before we took 13 - same result at the end of the season though - Champions.

Its not like we can say we are x amount of points up on last year, because were not always going to drop points against the same teams.

Obviously is not scientifically accurate, but it's far better than looking at games played to points won. We're actually taking a fairly meaningful look at the type of games.

I find it interesting anyway, which I don't normally do for stats.

Team 2009/10 2008/09 P(GD)

Birmingham(H) W(1-0) W(1-0) 0(0)
Burnley(A) L(0-1) W(5-0) -3(-6)
Wigan(A) W(5-0) W(2-1) 0(+4)
Arsenal(H) W(2-1) D(0-0) +2(***)
Spurs(A) W(3-1) D(0-0) +2(+2)
City(H) W(4-3) W(2-0) 0(-1)
Stoke City(A) W(2-0) W(1-0) 0(***)

Althought I agree to the facht we've had a fantastic start, its hard to compare fixtures from previous years completely because the teams played at the beginning of this season were played at different points last season, thus different form, continental commitments come into play and also games against tougher opponents/amount of games in a short span alter the team being played. I'm not sure a direct comparison can be made.

For Example:

Wigan(A) - May 13th 2009, three days after the Manchester Derby and three days before the Arsenal game

Arsenal(H) - May 16th 2009, only needing a point we put out a team to secure a draw that clinched the title.

Spurs(A) - Dec 13th, right before the fifa club world cup.

City(H) - May 10th, three days after the CK 3-1 semi final victory.

Stoke(A) - Dec 26th, first game back from Club world Cup.

maybe i'm wrong however one thing I know is that we have started well and are playing fantasticly sans Ronaldo/Tevez. Even with our wing play being substandard. As I think it was Ciderman pointing out, Fletcher, Rooney, Giggs and Evra have been immense this season already, with giggs being the standout of course.

But it still says more than 'how many points did you have at the same point last season'.

Magical Manchester United.
I usually do this comparison every year, right now it looks like this:

Manchester United: 1 (on route to 91 points)
Liverpool: 1 (87)
Chelsea: +3 (86)
Arsenal: +4 (76)
Aston Villa: +5 (67)
Everton: -1 (62)
Manchester City: +5 (55)
Tottenham: -2 (49)

Of course this changes every weekend, but it gives you a decent indication how the teams perform in relation to last season.

Updated. Still keeping up with last season's pace despite drawing today. Its clear our defence needs to be tighter.

Not looking too bad considering we've already played what are probably our two toughest fixtures in Liverpool and Chelsea away. Much improved goal-scoring record too, interestingly enough.

This is the results comparison thread, so the results against Chelsea and Liverpool are compared to those from last season. We're doing much better this season than we did at this particular time last season if you want a time-line comparison.

Scored 13 more goals huh? Are we sure we're missing Ronnie/Tevez? Its the defense thats been the real weakness so far this season, mainly due to the lack of stability with all our injuries.

I hope we sort out our defense...these stats are surprising - didn't expect to see that many goals being scored to be honest...

"Who will score the goals?!?!"
