All true, but remembering the days of freeze framing Winslets bazoombas for a good tug brings back good memories so I have a soft spot for it. (Or technically a hard spot)

I did that too.

Thank feck we now all have the internet.

No, the fact she's a girl makes her a girl.

...but it also helps to explain why she likes Titanic. Girls like Titanic. It's got Leo in it (oh he's so dreamy!) Kate Winslet is chunky (I could look like that!!) he's an idealistic, spunky young dreamer who rescues her from an unloving relationship by being heroic and having floppy hair (swoon!) and then sacrifices himself to save her even though he could easily fit on that door too if she wasn't a bit less chunky, or a selfish bitch. (I wish my boyfriend would do that for me!!).

It's sentimental old trash. Soppy, unrealistic sentimental old trash. Unfortunately, in a sub plot, 1,500 stereotypes died.

Being cynical is easy, but all of this is really well observed. Nice one. :p

Well, there is that I suppose. Do any men like Titanic? (well my cousin likes it, but then again he is gay). I'm just well into the actual story of the Titanic and I think Cameron did a fantastic job on the film. Yes, at the time Leo was dreamy (not so much now) but I just loved everything about the movie. The story, the effects, the music - it all fitted together perfectly. For a film to be 3 and half hours long yet still keep me interested is pretty good. I normally don't like long films (I fell asleep during Pearl Harbour it was so long) but I just was enthralled watching Titanic. I've seen it so many times but still every so often, I like to put it on and watch the whole thing and it never tires on me. It'll be the 100th anniversary in a few years time, Belfast will be jam packed I'm sure of Titanic lovers.
I haven't seen it for years but from what I recall, it wasn't the worst chick-flick I've ever seen. It was visually stunning and it helped greatly that there were two decent actors with genuine chemistry in the starring roles.

It was fecking tooth-achingly saccharine and sentimental though. Ultimately, it was just a chick-flick with a hefty special effects budget. Not a film that ought to be regarded too seriously IMO.

It just breaks my heart watching it, yes the story of the star crossed lovers is sad but knowing that this actually happened and all those poor souls on that ship losing their lives like that. It's just horrible.

Can't say Titanic does anything for me but it is a really well made film, technically. Cameron gets credit from me for that, its pretty epic once the iceberg hits the fan.

Editing my own posts.
Anyway, back to the OP...The fact that he writes most of his films automatically puts him on a higher pedestal than several others for me. He's a very talented man, even if he is prone to schmaltz once in a while.

I'm a bloke, and I liked Titanic

There, it's out

I watched the Zeta Jones version made a year before over Christmas. That was a steaming pile of crap, Tim Curry aside

Oh God I forgot about the music.....Sweet Jesus it was worse than I thought!
TBF James Cameron reportedly fought to the death to have the Celine Dion song removed but he was out-voted by fellow production staff.

I always get the urge to do this at Titanic when Leo sinks.

You should see his storyboards. And I hear his reputation as a taskmaster only gets overlooked because he's actually better at whatever job it is than 90% of his staff (lighting, rigging, etc.)

I hated Titanic. It's up there with Pearl Harbor in the worst movies based around a factual event ever.
Best ever review of Pearl Harbor:
"The Japanese Empire declares war on an insufferable American love triangle."

I agree that that could get annoying, but he does have the option of just walking away instead of telling the guy to feck off.

He is, of course, a monumental dick, as most people know. He won't sign your fecking poster!

YouTube - Avatar Director James Cameron Curses Out Fan Who Asks for Autograph
That guy destroyed him. His face when he is told Spielberg will sign anything. That made me feel sorry for him.

Still as a director he's made 1 excellent film (Terminator) 2 very good films (T2 and Aliens) and his fair share of dross (haven't seen Avatar). The studios trust him because he's a master at crowd pleasing spectacle (all his early film effects still hold up today) but a maker of great films? not for me.

Now Spielberg, there is a maker of great popcorn cinema.

In my opinion.

Gloves are worn for traction primarily. Someone li
Aliens is one of the greatest films ever made, never mind greatest action sci-fi. T2 is fantastic too, but don't forget that Cameron wrote it and designed almost everything about it, same goes for almost every film he does. Spielberg doesn't do that.

Seriously, Aliens is amazing. Anyone who doesn't think its one of the greatest films ever doesn't know what they're talking about. Even if you just condensed it to be all of Hudson's lines and nothing else it would still be one of the best films ever.
