He needs to get the cross in just a little bit earlier. He gets into great positions to put the ball across the 6 yard line but always seems to run 1 stride too many and ends just trying to keep the ball in rather than put making a dangerous cross.

I know OP said excluding injury, but Dario Silva having his lower leg amputated after a car crash seems worth a mention here. That goes way beyond the typical football related injury that would cause someone to retire.

I completely disagree. I think you're underestimating the importance of the role and the attributes required. Specifically his ball retention ability is why we need a player like him playing from deep. These type of midfielders seem to be the hardest to come by these days.
