CHELSEA are preparing a £15million New Year bid for Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho wants the England international to partner Didier Drogba in a little and large combination at Stamford Bridge.

And Mourinho is ready to make a double-your-money offer to the Premiership leaders’ London rivals. Defoe cost Spurs only £7m when he joined from West Ham in January.

The player still has four years left on his £25,000- a-week White Hart Lane contract but would jump at the opportunity to join the Chelsea revolution.

Spurs to snub Defoe bids

by Alex Livie - Last Updated 26 Nov 2004

Tottenham have insisted that any bid from Chelsea for striker Jermain Defoe will be given short shrift.

Widespread media reports on Friday suggested The Blues were readying themselves for a New Year raid on White Hart Lane for Defoe.

Despite topping The Premiership and sitting pretty in the UEFA Champions League, it is being claimed that Blues chief Jose Mourinho is unhappy with his forward options and wants to add an extra string to his bow.

Eidur Gudjohnsen, Didier Drogba and Mateja Kezman are Mourinho's attacking options, although Dutch winger Arjen Robben can perform in an advanced role if asked, and it was suggested that he was preparing a £15 million bid for Defoe as the replacement for Adrian Mutu who was sacked earlier in the season.

However, Spurs have stated that no bid has been lodged and that one will not be considered.

"Press reports in the Mirror, Express and Sun suggesting that Chelsea have made a bid for Jermain Defoe are totally untrue. Nor would such a bid be accepted," read a statement on Spurs' official website.

If Spurs are offered 15m they'll take it.
Yep they would be stupid to say no. They already got Kanoute and Keane.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has pledged not to move for Tottenham star Jermain Defoe in the January transfer window.
Mourinho had been linked with a £15m bid for Defoe, 22, but he has reassured Spurs that will not be happening.

"It is completely untrue. Not because I don't like the player, I like him. He is a very good young player but we are not interested," said the Blues boss.

Mourinho, who has Didier Drogba back, added: "We are not interested in any striker at this moment.

"If Didier Drogba's progress continues and in two weeks' time he is playing 90 minutes without any link to his injury, I am not thinking in having more strikers.

"The team has adapted very well to playing with three up front and we need only one targetman with Arjen Robben and Damien Duff playing alongside him.

"So for that reason, Mateja Kezman, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Drogba is enough. We don't need another striker."

Mourinho has lost Adrian Mutu from the group of four strikers he started the season with, after the Romanian was sacked in the aftermath of a failed drugs test.

But the Stamford Bridge boss clearly feels that Kezman, Gudjohnsen and Drogba, with support from Robben and Duff, gives him enough options.

It is likely, though, that Mourinho will strengthen his squad in January in other areas.

Spurs signed Defoe from West Ham for £7m in January 2004 and he has established himself as the senior striker at White Hart Lane, ahead of Robbie Keane and Frederic Kanoute.
