Don’t know which forum this should be in, but I’m looking forward to our three players picked for the Cup hopefully getting minutes against the likes of Eugenie Sommer, Jenifer Maroszan and Caroline Graham Hansen this summer!

No surprise to see those three going. Good luck to them all - even though Scotland and England are in the same group, so it's going to be hard for them all to be lucky.

Having our players in it adds a bit of extra spice to watching the WC of course. So does the fact that we'll probably see a couple of other players out there who'll join us for next season, and maybe a couple more who we'll be looking enviously at as the ones we'll hope to be chasing as "finishing touches" for the team in a couple of years time.

Jackie Groenen will be there playing for the Netherlands team as well.

They're in Group E with Canada, New Zealand and Cameroon. Canada are currently ranked 5th on the world, Netherlands are 8th.

I’m still in shock that Hansen wasn’t selected for the Scotland team. I mean from the looks of it we have good players and that Christie Murray I think her name is who plays for pool looks awesome. Whatever happens should be a good game between England and Scotland but still no Hansen :houllier:

So for the first round, we’ve got

Sunday: England (Greenwood, McManus) vs Scotland (Arnot, Smith)
Tuesday: Netherlands (Groenen) vs New Zealand

The first one being perhaps the gem of the tournament for us reds. Four United players in one legendary clash, hopefully they’ll all get some game time.

Other matches of notice in the first round are on Saturday:

Germany vs China and
Norway vs Nigeria,

where the best African team may topple a Norwegian squad perhaps influenced by worlds best player, Ada Hegerberg, refusing to play for the Football association and launching a scathing critique of the entire Norwegian football set up just days before the tournament kicks off. Nerves will jangle before that match!

Be interesting to see the first time Alex Greenwood, or Abbie McManus if she plays, put a crunching tackle in on JR today, if they stand over her and snarl or pick her up and dust her down might be an indicator as to whether there is any truth in the rumour. Or maybe not :)
Best she can hope for is an apologetic "sorry about that" hug at the end of the game

So a review of how our girls have done so far in the WC (haven’t seen all games, so hope others will give their piece):

Alex Greenwood: played well all tournament it seems, bar Japan when she was rested. Scored a goal against Cameroun. Solid at the back, solid with the ball playing out of defense, bit more cautious in attack, as Bronze is on the other side. Surprised that she was left out against Norway, though Stokes is not bad either and possibly more defensively sound?

Jackie Groenen: Has played everything bar fifteen minutes of the first match. Hasn’t really stood out as much as at the European Championship. I did follow her closely in the game against Japan, and think she played very well, with good positioning, movement, one-to-one-defensively and some very good passing. She could improve on her off-the-ball, in-possession movement, though it’s clear her role is in a way complementary to the more attacking stars in the Dutch team.

Abbie McManus: came in as a sub against Scotland, started against Argentina, then out. Did well enough, without standing particularly out either in games England were seldom threatened. Bright and Houghton is starting when fit, I guess.

Kirsty Smith: very good against England, held up well against Parris/Bronze, which you couldn’t say for Norway’s Minde for instance. Disappointing against Japan and Argentina though. Rough at the edges.

Lizzie Arnot: was hoping for more from her, she didn’t apply herself much in attack when I saw her. Disciplined, but didn’t offer much for an offensive player, and probably meeds to improve to cement a place in the WSL. She’s young, though.

So with the WWC over we added Jane Ross and then Mary Earps to our list.

But women players are still on the move, including Tony Duggan who is leaving Barcelona.

So one for the muppets then:
