Haven't seen them in years. When I was a kid the old stuff was shown regularly. Now it's been crowded out. Soon, only film historians will know who Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin, or James Cagney were.

Yeah James Cagney is the best. They used to show loads of black and white stuff when we were kids but there's nowt on these days. Rocket Man, Zorro, Abbott & Costello, Marx Brothers, etc. The stuff of legends.

Used to watch them when I was 10-ish, my Dad brought me the videos, loved it then.

The best comedy duo in history. Some of the most hilarious moments in cinema were down to folk like them and the Marx brothers.

without doubt.

I think its fecking tragic their films are rarely on TV these days, my da loved them and everytime a film was on he made sure we watched it, and it seemed every christmas growing up BBC2 would have a series of their films at 10am...plus 6pm was always good for a few shorts. It not right that they have to be sought out nowadays, they should have regular outings.

as for way out west

Lola: "Tell me, tell me about my dear dear daddy, is it true that he's dead?"
Stan : "Well we hope he is, they buried him."
Lola : "Oh it can't be, what did he die of?"
Stan : "I think he died of a Tuesday, or was it Wednesday..."

that scene fecking kills me..especially when ollie pushes stan and he bounces right back up off the sofa

Love them. Got a boxset of theirs a while back, and loved everything on it.

"Why did you get a veterinarian?"
"Well, I didn't think his religion would make any difference."

There is a girl at work with wonky eyes and every time she talks I am reminded of the film where Ollie gets married and the vicar is Ben Turpin.

Vicar: Do you take this woman to be your wife?
Stan: Who, me?
Ollie: Not you. Me.
Stan: Well he's looking at me.

Always been a fan since my dad made me watch them as a kid . Though I enjoy watching a lot of the older movies still like Bob Hope , Marx Brothers , Abbott and Costello and Harold Lloyd.

Oddly though never been a fan of Charlie Chaplin

Two unbelievably talented men and a joy to watch. Did anyone see the film Stan and Ollie that came out a year or two a go? Horrible the way they ended up.

Try some Buster Keaton for the absolute master class.

All these comedians of that era had been grinding vaudeville circuits, sometimes for decades before they started to do films. Performing up to 5x a day 7 days a week in front of sometimes very tough audiences gave them a level of precision, timing, and not least a shitload of material they knew that worked. The movie business was still young and in the process of defining itself, allowing them to experiment to certain extent, too.
When for example the Marx Brothers started to do original, freshly written material, it didn't work which is why their studio sent them on a live tour with the material before pointing a camera at them.

They all learned their trade thoroughly, and that is what separates them from their modern siblings.

Laurel and Hardy set the unreachable yardstick for every modern comedy partner duo, from de Vito/Schwarzenegger to Bud Spencer/Terence Hill (th latter alegedly were made to watch LH movies by their first director)
