If we need to change a game our substitutions going forward throughout the season will be Mata, Greenwood, Gomes and Chong. Maybe James if he is not starting.

Surely no one is going to kid themselves and act like this is enough? It’s almost embarrassing.

I know it’s closed. We cannot talk about the squad now then? It was very apparent when we were chasing a goal and all we had left was Mata and Greenwood.

It would help if we made the substitutions before the last ten minutes. It's difficult to play yourself into a tough game if you only have 10 minutes or less.

This is why I'm in favour of keeping Alexis. As bad as he's been, he still creates quite a lot of chances, and we badly need some depth.

I don't think it's embarrassing for United to want to give chances to young players.

Personally I'd have liked us to buy another elite attacker for the right wing in the summer but I'm not going to cry about it all season like some of this forum seem intent on doing with transfer wishes they didn't get fulfilled.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
Rashford and Martial are our two definite starters. After that we've got Lingard, James, Greenwood, Mata, Gomes, Chong, Pereira and, at a pinch, Dalot (also Sanchez if he doesn't leave). Two of those will start, the others will be our options off the bench. Actually we may end up with only one of them starting if we end up playing a third midfielder with Pogba released into a more offensive role.

We do have the pure numbers, the problem is that there are serious question marks over every one of them. Lingard is the only one at his prime and we all know the weaknesses in his game that he does have alongside his strengths. Mata and Sanchez are years past their prime and have been inconsistent (Mata) or straight up terrible (Sanchez) for years. The others are all youngsters, with the ones with the highest potential all being the youngest of the group who may not be physically ready to play a lot of games.

What we've done is risky, but it's the kind of risk that I'm tempted to say I'm ok with in the short-term. It's the final opportunity for the likes of Mata, Lingard, Pereira and possibly Sanchez to prove that they can contribute, while it's also an incredible opportunity for Greenwood, Gomes, James and Chong to show what they've got.

Giving chances to young players is not the embarrassing part.

Well, we bring Greenwood on and he barely touches the ball. Martial is injured. We are doomed.
