He’s not really vocal or the commanding type, being a captain doesn’t really suit him.

He was stripped of the captaincy after a major training ground bust up.

According to the Sun on Tuesday next week.

Yep. We noticed this as well. All singing his name in the Stretford End and he just stormed off without even as much as a glance which is completely unlike him.

I just assumed he might be pissed off at conceding but it was still out of character.
He should be pissed off at conceding that goal whilst he stood rooted to a he spot as per. He has been well below par for 12 months or so and isn’t making those great saves on the line anymore, whilst being stuck on his line when he should be doing far more. He was awful for the latter end of last season and not a great deal better this. Resting on his laurels when we are trying to inject some dynamism into the team isn’t helping us get back to where we want to be. We have excellent alternatives in Sheffield and the bench if he wants to throw a tantrum.

As much as it made sense to make him captain, there's zero use for a captain that's in the net.

Surprised at all of the negativity towards the OP. It's a perfectly reasonable question and I agree that it's a very odd move.

De Gea may not be a natural leader but he's been the best player at the club by a distance over the last 6 or 7 years. He deserves the captaincy more than a player who has been at the club for 5 minutes and still has a lot to prove.

It was said yesterday, possibly on commentary but I can't remember exactly, that the club were unhappy with his comments after the Newcastle game so took it away from him.

Keepers shouldn't be captains. They're not in position to give other players instructions.
Not just about instruction. What about complaining to the ref? Only Captain is allowed to speak directly into his face without getting a yellow card. While a Club captain might get some privileges such as a director box, the Captain being useful on the pitch is much more important. i.e. it is a responsibility, not a reward.

He seems terrified to get near his 18 yard line, imagine trying to coax him to halfway for the coin toss.

GKs dont make good captains, especially shy ones like De Gea are not captain material. Guys like Oliver Kahn may be a bit different from the norm and you can make an exception if you have such a character on the pitch and the dressing room, but in general, a GK shouldnt be a captain for me.

Best player does not equal good captain. And even him being the best player is debatable, hes not been himself since the WC.

What is there what you don't understand? And negative? I opened topic which involves one of our key players. Ddg said month ago how he wants to be captain and how he will be proud to be captain. Now after 7,8 years in club in which he was best player he lost that because of new player who just arrived. Everyone would be pissed in his place. What is wrong in saying that?

Now, again i repeat; i am not saying that DDG would be best captain and i also prefer defender or central midfielder for captain and Harry seems as excellent choice, but i am talking here about potential unrest in our squad. What is wrong with that?
And funny how suddenly we don't care about DDG. Like who cares, we can buy better than him, we have Henderson and Romero anyway, etc...

Personally( and that is my opinion and forum is the place to say it), i would be really pissed if someone comes in my team and becomes captain after 3 months while i was there 8 years.

Neuer, Schmeichel, Van der Sar, Kahn, Buffon, Casillas and Lloris have proven otherwise. De Gea could become more commanding if given the responsibility though.

What is the story here? I thought that he is vice captain? I would be pissed if i am him. 8 years in this club, best player for years and now he lost it because of player who is here 3 months. I am sure that Harry is great character and leader but still....not right thing to do
I wouldn't point to De Gea as being a natural leader, and to be honest, there is no one else at the club more suitable than Maguire, so I would be 100% behind this choice.

The best captain is someone who can inspire his teammates and is a player his teammates look to, to make a major difference when the game is on the line.

De Gea is not the most vocal or demonstrative character but he has shown more in his United career to earn the captaincy than Maguire has in his.

In a year or two, when Maguire leads a defence to 8 clean sheets in a row or shuts Aguero out for 90 minutes and then heads in the winner from a corner, he should be a candidate. Doing a good job in an error prone defence for a couple of months shouldn't earn you the right to captain United.

Maguire should be our captain, him and McTominay have shown themselves to be leaders and you can see that on the pitch.

I prefer a central defender or central midfielder to be a captain - In my opinion goalkeepers are not the best option.

You want a guy who can't command his own box to command the entire team?

He's hardly ever vocal or directing his defense. Wise choice to make Harry captain.
